I'm guessing that few if any in this forum have heard "Tomb Raider 2
Cradle of Life". (Me, I'm not even sure what it is. A movie?) You'd
probably have better luck asking about the nature show.
In any case, if you want someone to identify the tune, you'll have to
give us better hints than that. What does it sound like? People here
can identify just about any opera excerpt that has been recorded, but
we can't read your mind.

Angelina Jolie plays Lara Kroft, the voluptuous heir to the mantle of Indiana
Jones (an archaeological type in Raiders of the Lost Ark). A female James Bond
type.
The character of Lara grew out a video game popular, for obvious reasons (sex
and violence) with teenage boys.
Have not seen TR II; but TR I was a cinematic classic -- as long as you turned
the sound off. Ms Jolie has excellent, um, cinematography.

Gee, Mark, I though *I* wasn't much up on current movies, but the "Tomb
Raider" series involves a sort of female Indiana Jones, and it's hard to
escape their "trailers" on TV, whenever there's a new one released!
(Although I've not seen any of them, yet - they haven't quite made it to
late-night TV.)
It's become the Pachelbel Canon of non-opera-loving auditors. Inescapable
ever since those Brit Air commercials. Those of us who loved it since we
first heard the opera (and no, there isn't a lot of better music in Lakme)
are inclined to be peeved.

Bravo, Hans! Gracefully and endearingly put!
I do wish, though, that if your handing out fiats, it would be the 4

I watch a lot of TV, and I've somehow managed to escape the trailers.
Of course, about 50% of what I watch is C-Span, and most of the rest is
shows that I tape to watch later, fast-forwarding through the
commercials.
I had heard of the Tomb Raider video-game, but I wasn't sure whether it
had been turned into a movie, a TV show, a cartoon, or what.
Several people have mentioned the Indiana Jones connection. Is there
an actual plotline that connects the fictional Ms Croft to the
fictional Mr Jones, or is this just a commentary on genre similarity
with no actual connection in the story.

My first encounter with the duet was in the arty film "I've Heard the
Mermaids Singing", which I think was some time around 1988. At the
time, I knew of Lakmé by name, but I hadn't heard any of the music.
I don't think the piece was nearly such a hit then. It's rise to
celebrity is definitely a phenomenon of the past 10 or 20 years.
I think I'd have to agree that it's the best piece in the show, but I'm
also very fond of the tenor-soprano duet, the second tenor aria (*not*
"Fantaisie"), the bell song, and the lullaby.

Well, Rick, you seem to be doing very well here!
Of course, by no stretch of the imagination could this forum be said to
be comprised of normal people ;-)!
Cheers,

What a weird place for the flower duet from Lakme!!!! (Obviously
whoever scored the TV show hadn't the least idea of the operatic context
of the music.) But of course, there's a car commercial that uses "Vesti
la giuba" from Pagliacci in a totally inappropriate context, too, so I
don't know why I'm surprised.

In the case of my comment, I refer merely to the genre - I've not seen
any of the "Tomb Raider" films, but it's clear from the trailers that
they belong in the same ballpark.
