my favorite is the live performance from lincoln center by Sutherland
and Horne - they were so together it was like a velvet dream.

I would love to hear thoughts on this. Who has done the best version of this
duet.

I have only heard the Sutherland recording of Lakme with Jane Berbie in the
duet. I love it

That's easy:

There was a recording on 78 rpm records with Marcel Wittrisch and Miliza
Korjus.

I also enjoy Burles and Mesple, as well as Morino and Ruffini. Finally, Vanzo
and Sutherland are fine. But have no expectations of Kunde and Dessay--he is
too small voiced for my taste.

Of course, when you are talking about the Lakme duet, I always think of the
love duet.

I agree with you about Kunde. When I heard him in Puritani in San Francisco
(94, I think), he was barely audible at times from the 20th row or so.

One of the things I really love about Lakme is that there are three truly
great duets - the Lakme/Mallika one which everyone thinks of, plus two for
Lakme/Gerald.

As for recordings, I don't think you can go past Sutherland. She blends
beautifully with Vanzo, and Vanzo on his own is a delight to the ear.
