Can anyone help with a video recording of Carmen from ENO starring Katherine
Pring (my first, and so far the best Carmen I have witnessed). The cast also
included linda esthr Gray as Micaela, I think Robert Ferguson as Jose and was
broadcast on BBC late 70s? I`d be grateful for any assistance,

I am so happy that someone else values Pring as Carmen. With the exception of
the very last note of the Seguedille, everything was perfect. She was not a
slut or a psychoanalytical Carmen. Just 100% natural, barefoot and playful, yet
true and honest. That production was great too, remember the barrels with the
smugglers inside and the spilled watermelon cart?

I can`t honestly say I remember those particular production details, although I
did see it `live` as well as on TV, although I suspect it may not have been
Gray as Micaela. What satys with me about the production, Pring firstly, but
then the overall atmosphere of the piece. When the curtain went up on Lilas
Pasti`s you could cut it with a knife ! and carmen`s final entry in that
dress!!
This was one of the productions that made me realise I wanted to work in
theatre costume design in sone way. I was lucky enought o work with Lazarides
on a couple of productions.
Pring`s Fricka was another definitive performance imho.

Yes, never mind Klose, Thorborg, Branzell, Ludwig, Gorr, Lipovsek and all
those other benighted *foreign* women who didn't have access to the
nurturing of "Reggie" and who were provincial enough not to sing Wagner IN
ENGLISH, as he must needs be sung! There's never been a heldenbariton to
touch Patrick Wheatley, either!

-THE EDITOR

Pring was my first live Fricka. She was fine, in a small-scaled way. My next
two were Mignon Dunn and Helga Dernesch, vastly her superiors in scale,
vocal individuality and stage impact.

Hello, we're so pleased that Katie was appreciated like this. It means a lot to us. I'm her sister in law. It's such a sad time. I cant be in touch right now, but there is a CD version by Oriel Music Trust - this is OMT020. The broadcast on television was on February 15th, 1975. People have tried to get the BBC to reissue it because our Katie was so good. Cathy

Cathy. You have my condolences. I was just a fan, rather than friend or family, but it's a sad enough time for me. I shudder to think what you must be going through. Just listening to the CD, which was 1975. The CD can be still bought on operadepot.com The TV broadcast was a little later. I can be certain of this, because of remembering the girlfriend with whom I watched it. I'd really love a release of the televised version. Perhaps you can put pressure on the BBC. I gather the funeral is on Tuesday. RIP ♥

Googling her brought up an offering on ebay of a copy of the Radio Times covering the broadcast. The vendor posted a photograph of a double-page spread devoted to it: one page text, the other a colour shot of Katherine Pring in costume. I downloaded the photograph, but it seems that this chatroom does not permit uploading it here. The Radio Times issue covered the week 29 April to 5 May 1978 and the article shows the broadcast scheduled for the Sunday: i.e. April 29. The article quotes her "Personally, I can't bear the t***s and teeth-type Carmen" which seems a bit edgy by Radio Times standards. As for the Micaela, it was definitely Gray. She refers to the broadcast in her autobiography, saying little other than it brought her a bit more money.

Hello, such sad news. I was in the production and have a VHS copy of the performance. Quality isn't the best, but happy to share.
