The english words Richard Tauber used were written in 1931 by Harry
Graham.

all-holy Original Language), but I always assumed that the (one) word
you're missing was 'Shining'.

Before I discovered Tauber I had a James Melton rendition on one of those red
45rpm discs. His version contained these immortal words:

ever heard. . .and for a compulsive record collector like me ;-) the

Yes, I was correct as far as that went, but I dropped the ball badly on
two other variants. Regarding them, who knows whether Tauber himself
may not have made some changes of his own? At any rate, at
"and neath a magic spell has bound me"
Tauber sings, in both the English-language 1935 and the 1945 (over the
radio),"have found me." And at
"is the light in your eyes"
Tauber sings--again in both English-translation recordings--"in your
eye."
It's possible, since "eye" rhymes with "sky," that our initial
transcription may have been in error. As for "has bound" vs. "have
found," "have found" could be a deliberate alteration by Tauber himself,
since, arguably, this is easier to sing than "has bound." (BTW, isn't
"has bound" somewhat awkward, grammatically?)

I'm quite fond of the one Gedda did in March, 1996 in a BBC concert;
it's on my Mostly Men disc.
But why not 'splurge' on the EMI recording under Ackermann? Operetta
doesn't get any better than this and by skipping the Overture, they put
it onto a single disc. Schwarzkopf, Gedda - Das Land des Laechelns,
indeed!

I have posted that page at my WWW site and will do so again when
appropriate. Perhaps I should assemble several versions for comparison -
there are enough fine choices that one should have several depending on
one's mood.
Tauber himself wrote some pretty fine Tauberlieder for his own
operettas. Although some individual songs have been recorded, I know of
no recent complete production or recording. Can anyone suggest one?
