edwards had a brief ascendancy in the late sixties and seventies, a fair
amount at NYCOpera and briefly at the Met, lots in regional houses. good
sturdy sound, attractive on stage, then disappeared as suddenly as he
had arrived, possibly for extra-musical reasons.

I remember hearing Ryan Edwards at the Chicago Opera as Iago in Otello. The
Otello was William Johns and I believe the year was approximately 1981.
Edwards is American and was a commanding presence on stage. As I remember his
performance his vocalism was good but his acting was outstanding and you did
not take your eyes off him while he was on stage. He was the kind of Iago
that could make your flesh crawl.
I believe he has a book out on the Verdi baritone roles, too. I have seen it
in the library here. Perhaps he is teaching somewhere by now.
If anyone knows more about either Edwards of Wiliam Johns, please drop me a
note.

Ryan is a Texan, does indeed have a book out called "The Verdi Baritone",
co-authored with one of his sons, and lives in the Chigago area with his wife,
who I believe he said was the dean (or something like that) of Northwestern.
He spends a lot of time doing lectures and master classes, traveling about, and
is also one of the people involved in Marilyn Tyler's New OperaFestival di Roma
(which is also affiliated with the American Institute of Musical Studies). I
think Marilyn Tyler got him to agree to be artistic consultant for the Rome
program this coming year, in addition to being one of the vocal instructors
(which he has done in the past). Recently he did a week of coachings and
master classes here at the University of New Mexico, where (you guessed it)
Marilyn Tyler is the director of opera studies. If I can dig out his
"abbreviated form" cv that he presented when he was here doing the
coachings/master classes, I'll post it--if anyone is interested.
