80 years ago,the 8th of April,1921 Franco Corelli came to light in the city
of Ancona, and this event was sure a blessing for the ears of the entire
mankind!
Do you know of manifestations to celebrate this great tenor (in Italy or
abroad)?

Yes, Stefan Zucker is singing Happy Birthday to Corelli!

Seriously, does Corelli admit to being 80? I have seen various years given for
his birth, including 1923. But if any living singer deserves to be honored, it
certainly is Franco Corelli. The Met should do something in his honor, and pay
a well due homage to the man that sold out so many houses for them.

Best,
Ed

Somehow my calendar still says March! But.........it's never too early to celebrate the birthday of one of opera's greats. I know of no celebrations taking place but if I hear of any I will let you know. You might want to check his homepage to see if any events are taking place in Ancona.

My God - it was just yesterday when he stunned us with his fabulous ringing
voice; his generosity in giving that "extra" something which separates the
true greats from the mediocre; his athletic ability to move around the
stage; his stunning good looks.

It's almost like a doctor, who doesn't have the "right" to get sick - the
great, great, great Corelli just should not age!

Buon compleanno, caro Franco - vivrai sempre nel cuor mio!

You are so right, DonPaolo. I can hear Corelli's voice live in my ears as if it
were yesterday. It's hard to believe that it's almost 30 years since he last
sang a complete opera!

Gods should never grow old. And they never will through the miracle of
recordings- both live and studio. But especially live! Has anything ever
emanated from a recording studio with the visceral thrill of Corelli in
Ugonotti? Not that I've ever heard.

Though he stopped relatively young, Corelli was supreme in both his gifts, and
his ability to give those gifts to others by the dint of his incredible
singing.

He certainly will live forever!

Best,
Ed

Simply put, Franco Corelli was the greatest opera tenor since Caruso.
He may not have been the musical stylist Bergonzi was and he may not
have had the rapturous tone of a diStefano or Bjorling either. And yes,
Gigli was always sweeter. But to those in the audience, no tenor gave
more overall pleasure than Corelli. There have been many fine tenors
over the years and perhaps we will hear some in the future to match.
However, there have been only five the likes of which we will never hear
again and Franco Corelli was one of them (the other four magical and
unique voices, IMO, were Gigli, Bjorling, Lanza and Caruso).

Corelli is, and IMO, will remain by far, the greatest of all
heroic-tenors. That Vocal Scene rebroadcast about him , recently, was a
delight , as it was when originally heard. May he, along with Merrill,
and other treasures long remain "with us"!!!

i have to agree with you for the most part (although i dislike causo, i think
he's overrated)..., but what about: kraus, del monaco, shippa, or wunderlich? i
think they should be considered.... but regardless, corelli is, was, and always
will be the greatest....
