I was wondering what people in Southern California (esp. Mr. Tepper) think
of the changes in programming at KUSC.

This happened months ago. It's a start. But only that, a start.

While I have long since ceased to be a regular KUSC listener, the changes they
have made make sense to me. What really irritates me about the station is the
use of a total amateur to host the opera program on Saturday morning; Duff
Murphy has enthusiasm but little else. He continually mangles foreign words
and displays very little knowledge of the field of opera, e.g., deep on the
surface. I doubt if he as read The Grand Tradition, Opera on Record (three
volumes); he sucks up to Jim Svejda who originally was a superb announcer, but
because he has written a book on CD reviews he has become more than obnoxious.
Murphy's most recent solecism was a choice of the BEST recording of Casta diva.
His choice was Anita Cerquetti!!

Would that KUSC carried Jellinek's program.

Duff Murphy is indeed aptly named after a slang expression for a rear end.

It is rather apparent to me that some, if not all of the programs, that KUSC
dropped are distributed by MPR and now that MPR controls the programming on
KPCC (another Los Angeles station) - there is more going on here than KUSC
wants to admit. I know that Prairie Home Companion was a great $$ maker at
pledge time. Then KPCC runs it at the same time!

KUSC no longer runs "Prairie Home Companion" (but not all
of us are desolated by that fact - for some of us, a little
Garison Keeler goes a long, long way.) I just wish they'd
get rid of Monika Visher and her simpering mis-information
and mis-pronunciations. (But someone told me SHE actually
originates in Denver, not L.A., so is part of a "feed" from
elsewhere - it seems not everything claiming to be KUSC is
really broadcast from there.)

Do you suppose that's also the case with the conductor-hating Mark Sheldon?
