Here's a quick question - is the "W" of "Wally" pronounced as a "w" or as a
"v"? I'm learning "Ebben, ne andro lontana" and have no clue. My teacher
thought that is was a "v", but was not completely certain. Any ideas?

It's a "V," with the stress on the last syllable ("Val-LY").

Yes. Catalani and Toscanini were very close friends. Toscanini's oldest
child, Walter, also got his name from this opera. The third Toscanini
child, Giorgio, died of diphtheria at the age of six, so when the next
child, a daughter, was born, she was given a "W" name as well as a
precaution. Wanda Toscanini not only survived childhood, but she
went on to marry Vladimir Horowitz, and she is still alive today.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I can think of a lot of
tenors who SHOULD die in avalanches.....

Diane,

Since the plot was taken from the german novel *Die Geier-Wally*
(Vulture-Wally), it should be pronounced like Wagner, Walhalla,
Walku"re. Unfortunately for you, this is neither exactly like v nor
like w in english but v would be the better choice.

BTW, if you happen to sing it in Paris, beware of the postmen. You
might loose a robe and more :-)

I read that she was named after the opera.
