Wigged out at the Met and they sacked her. Then the voice shot craps with even
more wacky behavior at concerts and a shop lifting incident to boot. No opera
house will touch her now.

Although I am no great fan this statement is unfair and irresponsible. The
incident you seem to be referring to was widely reported to be an unpleasant
scene in a store concerning Ms. Battle's disatisfaction (however reasonable or
not) with the store's policies, and not shoplifting.

Perhaps her misplaced displays of "temperament" caused her career to
self-destruct? From the reports which flooded these newsgroups (and the
news) a couple of years ago, she carried the "prima donna" image a bit
too far - with her colleagues, where it really matters, not just with
her "public".

Years latter...when she had gotten to 'Diva' status...I read where she was
involved with getting a production director fired because he disagree with
her...then the rest started...'Prima Donna ASSoluta'...what a shame...what a
waste of talent supplanted with misdirected ego.
She is what she is today...by her own making...once a great artist...now an
operatic pariah...more's the pity.

ROTFL!
She sang at Ravinia's gala last season and it was a complete disaster. She
refused to come out for bows with Denyce Graves and refused to sing the agreed
upon duets. She put on a real "show" so to speak. I seriously doubt she will
ever be asked back.

But never better than at the conclusion of this duet from the Feb 1981
broadcast of L'Italiana in Algeri where she soars above the chorus.

A day fraught with astrological portents (note my (daytime) AOL name
above).
And it was a Friday, to boot.
Unfortunately baby Battle and I were the last two infants waiting in
line for our talents and virtues on that fateful August night, and
those qualities had been pretty well picked over by the time we
crawled to the front of the line.
Ms B quickly snatched up all of the remaining talent and looks (there
was an abundance of each), most of the personality, and the last few
crumbs of amiability.
Leaving me with an overflowing basketful of self-righteousness and
undersized portions of whimsy, consternation, and spite.
So you see, it's not my fault.

This response says a a great deal about you as a person.
It seems quite clear that you are unfortunately concerned
more with her skin color than her talent. Sure she may
need an attitude check, but your comment of her is so
tacky and underserved.
And overtly racist as well. (Would Ondine have called a reputedly difficult
Caucasian soprano a "white bitch?" I sincerely doubt it).
Henry Fogel
I loved her voice. I heard her live only once, and was a bit disappointed; she
sounds better to me on records. Outside of opera, the Chrismas CD she did with
Von Stade has some really magnificent singing. She also appeared with the
Vienna one New Years Eve, and she sounded as lovely as she looked.
Second comment. The thing that calls itself Ondine is now the sole resident of
my "plonk" list.

Not so. You have plenty of whimsy. And about an average portion of spite, I
would say...

I'm sure most would agree that Kathleen Battle is a bitch. Her race has
absolutely nothing to do with it and has no place in this discussion.

I'm not so sure. I've heard people say "white bitch" quite a bit. It's
not all that uncommon among people who speak with a "San Francisco
accent".
I agree with Terry on this one: "bitch" is accurate, "black" is
irrelevant.

I personally cannot recall anyone being referred to as a "white bitch".
"White Witch" maybe.

Paul: Nice reply...I'm sure I'll be taking more interest in your future
postings. You see...intelligent discussion tempered with a bit of wit &
whimsy makes for some good, fun reading...maybe I'm just like the "...who
are you...my mother" line hurled at my head by...oh...I forget who...but
that's OK...I try to remain civilized.

Maybe it's a Left Coast thing. Neither is common, and neither is nice,
but I would guess that I've heard "white bitch" more often than "black
bitch".

Is "bitch" relevant? To what?
I don't see it. There's nothing wrong with being black. Calling her a
'bitch' is insulting. Surely that's the word to take issue with?
> Is "bitch" relevant? To what?
To hiring. If you're an opera company deciding which singers to
contract with, you don't really care what color the prospect's skin is.
You do care, very much, if the prospect is consistently difficult to
work with, alienates other artists, wastes rehearsal time, is
unreliable in her commitments, makes the whole process less enjoyable
for everyone, etc.
[Jim again, in another post]
> I don't see it. There's nothing wrong with being black. Calling her a

Yeah, it's insulting, but it's accurate. I suppose you could state it
more diplomatically, but it's rather a difficult challenge to find a
phrase which communicates the same information in ten words or less.
Anyway, your logic here is completely backward. Suppose I describe
some baritone as being a man who has "long hair and a horrible voice".
There's nothng wrong with having long hair, but saying that he has a
horrible voice is insulting. But the horrible voice is the part of the
description that really matters.
It's not a coincidence that the "insulting" part is also the relevant
part. You say "there's nothing wrong with being black." Exactly.
That's why it's irrelevant. There *is* something wrong with being a
bitch, and that's precisely why that *is* relevant.
