I understand from the "other" group that the wonderful Anna Russell passed
away in her sleep last night. Believe that she was in her 90s.

Along with the skits by Sid Cesar, Imogene Coca & Carl Reiner, Anna was the
foremost opera satirist of her or any generation. After I first saw her, I
left the theater with tears rolling my cheeks & sore abdominal muscles,
resulting from her uproarious performance....Included
in the program was an audience "sing-along" to one of Verdi's choral music
from Nabucco, but with the words, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abendigo..."

RIP, dear lady & thanks for helping us opera nuts laugh at ourselves.

I remember her always punctuating her description of the plot
action in Wagner's "Ring" operas with the observation, "I'm not making
this up, you know!"

She will be greatly missed.

Somehow, that Russell-ism should be incorporated either in her eulogy, or
upon her tombstone....

A great, totally adorable, and unforgettable lady, - among Opera's true
icons.

This brief article on her career is but one of many:

I still remember the first time I heard the "Explanation of Wagner's
Ring". It was late at night on WBAI in the New York area. I was
listening in headphones. It took a while before I realized that I was
laughing heartily out loud like a maniac. I still send her CDs to opera
"newbies" I meet. Great lady.

LT,
recalling a late-night WBAI opera program predating Zucker's; Marius
Shanzer was its host.

How about...'she was his Aunt!'. Or- "Begins in the River Rhine. IN IT!"

I can't tell you...nor need I...the number of times her words have left me
crying with laughter. I wish I could have met her.

RIP lady...you deserve it!

bersderk, just what is your kind of humor? the perverse inarticulate
