Gianna Rolandi did not 'disappear all during the 80's'. She sang
in Glynbourne, the Met, Chicago among other houses in the 80's, got married
to conductor Andrew Davis. The voice started to run into trouble in the
late 80's, losing its high extension. She sang a Musetta with the Canadian
Opera around that time and the vocal deterioration was evident. She is
supposed to be still singing essentially mezzo roles, but her announced
Italian Singer in Capriccio last season at the Chicago Lyric never
materialized, replaced by Emily Golden on opening night.

Rolandi sings an excellent Zdenka on a commercial video of Arabella--I
believe Ashley Putnam sings Arabella. If you are a Rolandi fan, go
for it. - Richard

PS. I heard her sing a delightful Figlia della Regimento. Thought she
was less successful as Lucia.

Gianna Rolandi will be returning to her hometown of Spartanburg,
South Carolina in October for a concert with the BBC Symphony,
conducted by her husband, Andrew Davis. The program for Rolandi's
portion simply states (at this time) "selected Italian arias."

It's my understanding from talking to a friend of mine who studies
voice with Rolandi's mother that Gianna is moving more towards the
dramatic soprano repertory, such as Ariadne.

It will be interesting to see what she sings in October.

Miss Rolandi is still singing. She married conductor Andrew Davis
in the late 80's and they reside in England. Miss Rolandi had a
son,Edward sometime thereafter. She also suffered some health crises
but has sung all along. Her voice has grown and matured. She is
learning new repertoire such as Il Trovatore, Manon Lescaut,
Semiramide, and I Vespri Siciliani. She will be on tour with Maestro
Davis and the BBC Orchestra this fall and will perform in Philadelphia
with them on October 23,1995.
