"Voigt has not been singing anything near well since her thin self emerged with the help of gastric bypass surgery some seven years ago."

Ms. Voigt is through on the stage - she was in perilous state yesterday, and
aside from the vocal weaknesses - lunged-at shrill high notes, no control of
the middle voice, shallow breaths and truncated phrases - she missed lyrics
right and left, in a way that would not be tolerated in other great houses.
She said in an interview several weeks ago with Margaret Juntwait, that this
would be her last go-around with the Cycle - I don't think she did much
brushing up for this go-around.

It seems not that long ago, that I saw her on TV, in a Richard Tucker
Tribute, I think, in all her former commanding girth, waddle on stage (like
a blonde Stignani) and launch into a terrific "Inflammatus," with a couple
of soaring High C's, that said, "May I have your attention, please!" And
for a few years, hers was a truly beautiful, seemingly sturdy, very American
instrument, but not, imo, always intelligently used, and with problems
increasing as the years passed, especially after the Salome challenge, when
the weight was shed, and she took on the great screamer roles - Dyer's wife,
the Egyptian Helen, Gioconda, Minnie. Thanks, Ms. Voigt, for the good
years. Have a happy retirement. And you look really great!

Actually, I believe that was the Rossini Bicentennial Gala in 1992 -
twenty years ago.

Yes, you are right. I dug out the old VHS tape of the concert - a Lincoln
Center Live event - and Ms. Voigt was splendid - full, lush, in tune, and
loud - and a handsome woman. After her performance, Martin Bookspan
mentioned that she had just won the 1992 Richard Tucker Award. I knew there
was a connection.

She was interviewed last week by Charlie Rose, but that interview is
still not available online:

At least she looks more attractive. No one in their right mind wants to see a fat person singing. Obesity is a national embarrassment and even opera singers must do their part to fight it.

Anyone who has the slightest appreciation of the lyric stage is with Terry - it didn't matter how the the truly great singers looked and you got more understanding of Tristan und isolde with Melchior and Flagstad on stage than with any other better looking singers. Wagner Fan

I can't imagine why an opera singer would submit to voluntary abdominal
surgery to lose weight! Retraining those muscles for breath control
after such a drastic operation would be a well-nigh impossible task no
wonder she's no longer worth listening to.

A singer need not be obese, but the modern anorexic ideal isn't healthy
for anyone. The great singers of the past were mostly on the hefty
side, and most of us with ears would prefer a great voice in a large
form than a mediocre one in a skinny package.
