What is the full, "official" title of the tenor aria about the clown,
and what opera is it from? Is it something to do with Pagliacci?

Thanks in advance...

The aria is "Vesti la giubba" preceded by a powerful recitative, "Recitar
mentre il preso dal delirio."

The opera is PAGLIACCI (sometimes mislabeled as "I PAGLIACCI").

The opera is really about Strolling Players of whom the leader is Canio. There
is a show put on for the townspeople in which Canio takes on the role of
Pagliaccio.

The crux of the tragedy is that the comic role that Canio must perform
parallels his real life situation as a betrayed husband. And the betrayer,
Nedda, plays the role of Pagliaccio's wife, Colombina.

This is a wonderful little opera that remains evergreen.

Dear "grndpadave",

That should be "mentre preso dal delirio," not "mentre il preso dal delirio".

This is about the only thing I'm really anal about (sad really) Leoncavello
wrote 'Pagliacci' just 'clowns' not I Pagliacci...there shouldn't be a
definite article.....I had no idea what a sad bastard I was until this
moment!

Like many opera arias, this one does not have an official title. It is,
however, most commonly known as "Vesti la giubba".

Yep, and that score is wrong. Probably the most blatant of Schirmer's
numerous errors.

This reminds me, did I forget to post the response Rick Bogart sent me
about the Beppe/Peppe question? I can't remember.

IT's NOT a wrong spelling! "i" means "the" in italian, so its' like
"clowns" vs. "the clowns".
