Even more closely akin to "Zorba", "Tevye", and "Inspector Jacoby" aka
Herschel Bernardi, great actor-singer.

Actually, midway by a couple of days between the death of his beloved
wife, - and what *would* have been his birthday. They'd also lost a son
years before. Truly one of the finest actors ever, with a magnificent
basso-cantante speaking voice.

"The Mountie Who Never Got His Man" - by "Sergeant McCorkle" in the
remake of "Rose Marie".

Mark,
There was a time, not too long ago, when I, for one, would have
counter-insulted you for that "amen corner" *remark, inaccurate, btw;
but I won't, since there's also been a time, again not too long ago,
when you and I, -if not actually friends- were not actively "enemies".

I believe that many things and people's ways exist in a matter of
*degrees*. I'm telling you that, though you and I are generally on
opposite sides, I do NOT consider you in the Boll-league, for example.
I've seen good posts and comments from you - which mean you're
capable of them.

Again, for example:

>Reading all this stupid bullshit

OK, that's "mean", but moving on to:

>gives my eyes a Charlie
> Horse.

That is funny!!!
I'm seriously saying so!!! It fits the tone of the thread, actually!

>Or a Charlie Horse's Ass. As you will.

What I will - is not insult you. I now have no wish to. Surprised?

LT,
*and if it makes you feel better, not all of this "amen corner" are
"pals", by any means. It's just the way it works, somehow.

Goes to show the true lyric nature of the voice. This assessment, I've
also found applicable to Hampson - in the same three roles, - though
as the Toreador, TH's relative lightness didn't detract much from the
effect. Smoothness and legato carried him through.

>Last I
> heard, JPR was "converting" to heldontenor (he did have a nice ringing upper

Haven't heard of JP in year, either, but the fach-conversion seems a
reasonable choice for a baritone whose range is basically similar to
H-Tenor Territory. The outstanding example, of course, being that
Grand Dane, Lauritz Melchior. Vinay, OTOH, sang in SEVERAL vocal
categories.
