Subject: Domingo in love
Hello listers:
This may be of some interest to someone: a prestigious Italian newspaper, LA
STAMPA, writes today that Placido Domingo has left his wife Marta and moved
in with his new girlfriend, a 21yo Rumenian girl...
Regards
Nicola Lischi
Where does this 21-year-old live? It sounds unlikely that Placido
would find the digs of a 21-year-old Rumanian soprano (somewhere else I
saw a comment that she's a soprano) to meet his requirements for living
quarters. And he doesn't exactly live his life in one place, does he?
More likely, she travels with him whereever he goes, don't you think?

What... no great outcry like we had when Pav legged it with his 26 year old
*secretary*?
Mmmmmmmm
Perhaps I could say "how predictable"!!

Luciano Pavarotti : The greatest tenor in the world
In addition, Domingo doesn't seem to be the massive egoist that
Pavorotti is, and Domingo, to me anyway, seems more committed to his
art. When Domingo sings a role he always sings the character. When
Pavorotti sings a role he always sings Pavorotti.
Don't think I don't like Pavorotti. I love that great wash of beautiful
sound that comes out of his mouth.

I think Sara is on to something very important here. The massive
marketing effort that put Pavarotti over as a household name was based
on (besides his stunning voice and personal charm) positioning the tenor
as a sort of giant cuddly plush toy, a sexless roly-poly big
kid-next-door in a tux. The public persona of Pavarotti therefore never
was that of a sexual being. On the other hand, once Domingo's handlers
decided to make him into an equally famous (and highly-paid) Weltstar,
their approach was to market him as a sort of Latino James Bond: sexy,
exotic, highly intelligent, slightly mysterious.
Now, what the public at large was not aware of was:
* the adorable king-sized choir boy is actually a lech who enjoys
chewing on chorus girls, and
* the big-brained Don Juan is actually a workaholic wonk whose every
trip to the bathroom is planned out a month in advance.
Such unpleasant truths don't sell CDs and video documentaries, so they
were deliberately covered up by zealous flacksters.
Imagine our shock when we find out that everything we have heard about
our Hanky Boy idol is untrue: that in fact our adorable and
unthreatening Tickle Me Luciano actually has a sex life! What a
betrayal! (Not to mention, just a bit revolting: have you seen the
photos of him on the beach?) On the other hand, the news that Domingo
has a girlfriend on the side is not really news at all. I mean, look at
the cover art on all those "Tango Mi Amor" albums: anyone who dresses
that much like Fernando Lamas *must* be getting plenty.
So what I'm waiting for is the next televised 3 Tenors Extravaganza:
what do you bet the grandstand cameras will be focusing on the
gentlemen's new squeezes in between numbers?

So that makes the morality of one, Domingo, ok in everyone's eyes... and
the behaviour of the other, Pavarotti, wrong?
Strange world we live in eh?

No. I have idolised Domingo for the last seven years. Call me naive, but
I am appalled by the latest revelations. If only a fraction of what
they're saying is true then he has fallen off his pedestal in a big way.

I doubt that this would make me scream, but I do have to say that I am
disappointed. I have always thought that Domingo had a lot more maturity and
integrity than the Pav.

I don't care who he loves, who he sleeps with or what he does off
stage. I just care that he continues to sing well.
Idols have a way of doing that.

It IS only the tip of the iceberg. But why put him on a pedestal
regarding women?
He is, after all, a Latin male, and besides that he always wanted to
please his mother (who was hard to please, to say the least - and I know)
so his conquests of 100s (1000s?) of women are partially toward that end.
His whole driven career is to satisfy his mother, who could never be
satisfied. And he's got another mother for a wife. So don't be
surprised.
Also I heard from several sources (who've been THERE) ... he's no "great
shakes."
I was close to finding out (at first hand) on a few occasions, but it
never did happen, and I guess I'm glad it didn't.

Well, maybe if you'd taken better care of your hands......

Perhaps caviar is wasted on those who habitually trough out on baked

So even he knows where to draw the line.

In answer to Teanga, whoever she is, it sounds like wishful thinking to me. Now we can all go ahead and claim
that we too were *there* - where, may I ask? or, even better, that Domingo made advances and we rejected him -
what a magnificent fantasy! When you come right down to it, to those who never did like him, what
difference does it make whom he sleeps with? And for those of us who admire him, maybe we should start
asking what it is that we admired him for? Ya, so we thought he was a saint and we found out he's human,
maybe a bit too human. So we are disappointed. But how much do we really know? I read the blurb in La
Stampa. It said nothing about him leaving his wife etc. It only said that Domingo was in love with a
21-year-old Rumanian soprano by the name of Alexandra. Period. What I want to know is - is he still singing?
Fiorella
Placido Domingo appeared last night at the Washington Opera to announce the new season. He was in the company
of his wife and said that he had just flown back from Acapulco where he spent a week's vacation with his
family. So I assume he also did the concert. Let me know if you want details about the program.
Fiorella
You'll all be glad to know that Marta Domingo was at her husband's side when he announced the new season of
the Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center last night. He said they had just flown back from Acapulco where
he spent a week's vacation with his family. The announcement was reported in a posting on Opera-l last night,
and there is also an article by Tim Page on the Washington Post this morning.
No time now, but I'll post the opera schedule tonight if nobody has already done it. Sounds great! And let's
change the name of this thread and get back to opera.

The reasons some of us would be disappointed, were the LA STAMPA story
actually true (and despite how "reputable" you claim that paper is, I
still put it way below the New York Times or the Manchester Guardian in
terms of credibility for such stories - even the "best" Continental papers
have always had a large trash element, particularly when it comes to
"gossip" reporting), would be because Domingo has made a huge point
throughout his career in playing up his happy family man image, and his
devotion to his wife. I'm not saying that at 56 his head couldn't have
been turned, and he might not have been bit bad by the romance bug - it
happens, and it might be evidence that he has finally allowed himself
enough time to go the "midlife crisis" that seems to plague a lot of men.
But I do remember your original posting, which was *NOT* just that LA
STAMPA said Domingo had fallen in love with the 21 year old Rumanian girl,
but that he's *MOVED IN WITH HER*. So you first have got to get *your*
story straight. There is a big difference between his simply having
fallen in love with her and his moving in, the latter implying that he has
left his wife of nearly 40 years for a woman young enough to be his
daughter (or almost his granddaughter, if you consider the age of his
oldest son). As far as I'm concerned, until I hear/see the story
corroborated by a more reputable source than an Italian newspaper, I'm
going to look upon it (and your mutating telling of it) very sceptically.
Karen Mercedes
yes, and what does that say about our dear miss teanga, trying to make it with
a married man? I think of a few choice words to describe her, like skank,
skeezer, etc. (I apologize to those members of the group that I might have
offended with those words...I kept it as clean as I could)
Let's face it...I never thought Domingo was an angel, but I still
admired him. Why? Let's start with his good relationship with his co-stars,
his friendly, mature public image, and his extreme musical competence and
superb voice. Domingo has so much more than his voice, unlike the other two
stooges that he sometimes sings with for Rudas...(Carreras cannot even lay
claim to having a voice anymore!)
If indeed he did cheat on his wife, which I see no evidence of in the
article, and it becomes public knowledge, then I will be disappointed in the
man. It will not however, change my opinion about his tenor qualities....
