PCO have seven albums out (according to their last release). Simons
Jeffes calls them "Volumes of Music").

They are:

Music From The Penguin Cafe 1976 EEGCD 27
Penguin Cafe Orchestra 1981 EEGCD 11
Broadcasting From Home 1984 EEGCD 38
Signs of Life 1987 EEGCD 50
When in Rome 1988 EEGCD 56
"Still Life" at the Penguin Cafe 1990 DECCA ?
Union Cafe 1993 Zopf 518 410

"When is Rome" is a live album recorded at The Royal Festival
Hall, London and "Still Life" is a ballet (also available as a video). I
haven't heard "Still Life" so I do not know what it is like. The earlier
PCO work recorded for EG records may stiil be available through Virgin
Records (I know I had a hell of time trying to get them here in
Australia).

An Australian new band with similar sounds is 'My Friend the
Chocolate Cake". There first release was self titled and released in
1992 through Festival Records (I think). There second (and most recent)
release is "Brood". This was released last week also through Festival
Records.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of this before. There are some similarities: use
of cello, and some of the rhythms. Of course, I'm only familiar with a
couple PCO albums, but MFTCC are seem to be more of a vocal band
that PCO.

Of course you can't mention MFTCC without mentioning Not Drowning,
Waving. David Bridie is the vocalist and for both of the groups. In
addition, the two groups share the same cello player (and more members
on the first MFTCC album).

Definitely do check out Not Drowning, Waving if you think a unique blending
of folk, progressive, ambient, and world beat sound like your cup of tea.
They have several releases though only "Claim" and "Circus" are available
in the US. Of the two, I recommend starting with "Claim"

Another related recent release is the Bridie/Phillips release "Projects".
It is a compilation of soundtrack work they have done over the past 10
years for film, stage, and television. Bridie and Phillips were the
founders of NDW. The "Projects" CD is available only in Australia
right now.

E-mail me if you want to discuss NDW, MFTCC or related. Thanks!

Believe it or not, David Bridie himself has said MFTCC was originally
imagined as a "cross between Penguin Cafe Orchestra and John Cale".
I'm quite serious about this.

The soundtrack for the Aussie movie "Proof" is also available as a
domestic USA CD (albeit in precious quantities). Someone told me the
"Spark" CD5 (with two bonus tracks) was distributed in select U.S. markets
briefly as well. Can anyone confirm that?

It's about time someone started a NDW/MFTCC mailing list. I know of
about 30 devoted fans. If only we can find someone willing to set up a
bounce list for us.

Drop me a line if you can help out in this venture. Several of us have
discussed this in the past, the working title was "Not Drowning,
Raving" or "NDR" for short, but no-one could come up with the system
resources to set up a mailing list.

A simple bounce list will do for now!

Thanks,
