Re: List your Top 10 soundtracks

These are boring! Far more interesting are lists like the one which
appeared in last months's FSM, "10 good movie scores".

The ones appearing in rec.music.movies only seem to contain recent
scores (random stuff from the 90's which sold well), and boring
classics (such as Star Wars trilogy..."Empire Strikes Back...but I'll
have Star Wars and Jedi as runners-up) !!!not that the SWT music is
boring, it's just a boring _choice_!!!

What's more interesting is when people put much less talked about
scores in their list. Being honest, I guess these wouldn't get
much higher that 15 or 16 in someone's list if they wasted time
and worked it out properly. But at least I'd try something NEW
if they had Josh and S.A.M. at number 5, or The Vagrant at number 7.

Either set up rec.music.movies.lists+surveys, or change the thread
to "10 scores I love and I bet you haven't heard". Please!

This is maybe not my 10 favorite sountracks (this is too difficult),
but just a list of 10 sountracks I really like, with a limit of
only 1 per composer.
Except CONAN that is the absolute number 1, the order of the others
varies a lot

1 CONAN the Barbarian (Basil Poledouris)
2 Batman returns (Danny Elfman)
3 Prosperos books (Michael Nyman)
4 Robin Hood, Prince of thieves (Michael Kamen)
5 Star Wars (John Williams)
6 Mission (Ennio Morriconne)
7 The Killing Fields (Mike Oldfield)
8 Phenomena (Goblins)
9 Dune (Toto)
10 Justinien Trouve, le batard de Dieu (Germinal Tenas)
(this one is a french film and the music is beautiful).

You've GOT to be kidding! WHY? Why do you prefer that fake music over the
original music from the movie? I know several people who went out and
bought that "New American Orchestra" version, sadly realized it was fake
and didn't have *any* of the futuristic magic of the original, and took it
back.

My personal Top Ten (boy, I wish I could afford more soundtracks)

10. Dune by Toto (don't bug me...I like it =P)
9. Dances With Wolves by John Barry
8. Total Recall by Jerry Golsmith
7. Star Trek II by James Horner
6. Aliens by James Horner
5. Hook by John Williams
4. Terminator II: Judgment Day by Brad Fiedel
3. Sneakers by James Horner
2. Star Wars by John Williams
1. The Empire Strikes Back by Jown Williams

With honorable mentions to Return of the Jedi by John Williams, E.T. by same, all of the other Star Trek STs (excluding Generations which I still don't own, sadly), Gremlins II: the New Batch by Jerry Goldsmith, Jurassic Park by Williams and Fantasia...

These ratings fluctuate...normally I'd rank Total Recall much higher, but I'm
back on another Star Wars tear...

No, I'm not a genre fan...what makes you think that?????

Oh, yeah...Pulp Fiction gets an honorable mention, too...

Whoops! Thanks for the "friendly flame." I guess I was a little punchy

score for Doyle's first foray into film, eh?

Well, maybe it's because the composer's name is buried in little print in
the credits on the front of the album (right after showing in BIG print
the actors and the director), and the back of the album talks about the
film and the actors, but doesn't even mention the composer and his music.

Sorry, this is an old gripe with me. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be
as true it used to be, although they still seldom talk about the composer
or his music. Film composers are the Rodney Dangerfields of the music
industry.

Actually I agree with you. I'll get out a magnifying glass if I have to,
in order to find the composer's name. I saw recently on
alt.binaries.sounds.midi where someone requested that someone post Clint
Eastwood midis; "like from Fistful of Dollars or The Good, The Bad, and
the Ugly." AAAAARRRGGGHH!!!

Gawd, what a hideous quote.

Well, Kevin, I guess the point is (and I hope I am not saying this to
someone who's been here a while, but rather is new to our group) that the
residents of this newgroup for the most part are VERY serious about film
composition, and to a great extent, the composers themselves. A score is
inseparable from its composer to the folks in this group. We come to know
what to expect, and are often either let down or pleasantly surprised,
depending on our experience with the composer before. Both Jarre and
Poledouris (granted: Poledouris is less prodigious as Jarre) are staples
of the industry. It's not as if we were mentioning Zbignew Priesner, or
an obscure composer like Collin Towns (The Puppet Masters is the only
title I can think of), whose names it would be understandable to forget.
If one lists a score among their top ten favourites, then one probably
owns said score, and at least knows something about its composer. I know
very little about Hans Zimmer, as he is not my favourite composer, but
Patrick Doyle, James Horner, John Williams, Jerry Godlsmith Alan Silvestri
I know a bit about, even if I don't own many of their scores.

None fo this essage is intended as a flame, and I probably wasted a lot of
people's time with it (if this thread is even still being read), but
rather it is intended to explain why some in this group were a little
surprised (and even offended) at not even knowning the names of
highly-regarded film composers, especially in the context of "Tina Turner
& some other guy", where "some other guy" is the man responsible for
Lara's Theme from Dr. Zhivago and Laurence of Arabia and Building the Barn
from Witness, and Keating's Triumph from Dead Poet's Society and Jacob's
ladder and. . .

Pehaps instead of flaming, we should aplaud somebody for the possiblity of
having enough of a real life to froget a name like "some other guy"

Haha! I like this one. The great composer Mr Disney! Of course, this
is (either unwittingly or deliberately) a fantastic way of actually
describing what the soundtracks to these films *are*. Pure, Disney.
I think that within 2 weeks of any composer being hired by Disney they'll
start churning out horribly unmusical but commercial and popular tunes
to do with 'Feeling love' and 'What I Wish...' etc etc etc...

So much for creative individuality..

so you are saying that the music in these movies is noonvalid. have
you listened to the instrumentals, that aren't just re-hacking the songs.
many of those are quite good, and although none would be on my top ten list,
i still think they are enjoyable pieces of music.

You see, this is my point exactly.... why does Disney force composers to compose
this music? Because it's...POPULAR! So, we get Oscars and bestselling albums
and what-not. Now, popular, and enjoyable and 'nice' does not make for good/
valid/interesting songs or film music or music as a whole.

Yes I have listened to the incidental music and have much of it at home. But
at least in recent years lets not kid ourselves that they are making something
'worthy' in musical terms (please note, I'm limiting myself to the last five
or ten years, when *anything* Disney has just had a ridiculous overkill effect
in terms of oscars etc etc etc)... I may like a song on the radio, everyone
may be listening to it, it may be popular, enjoyable... does that make it good?
I don't think so. And very often, it isn't.

Bye,

Juan

For the record, these scores >do< have composers. LITTLE MERMAID was
composed by Alan Menken (with lyrics by Howard Ashman) and ALADDIN was
composed by Menken (with lyrics by Ashman and Tim Rice). THE LION KING
featured a score by Hans Zimmer and songs by Elton John and Tim Rice.

It isn't really fair to credit these scores just to "Disney".

I apologize for this...I log on from work and didn't have those CDs with
me (although I regularly listen to Braveheart at work). The rest I knew
the composers for, but the names escaped me for these...

5. E.T. -- Steven Spielberg
6. Brave Heart -- Mel Gibson
7. The Magnificent Seven -- Leonard Bernstein
8. Live and Let Die -- Paul McCartney
9. A Hard Day's Night -- The Rolling Stones

Sorry about this post, my dog got on my account again. He may not know
much about music, but he knows what he likes.

>--all 3 by some Italian guy... (Ennio Montenegro?)

No, my dog got this wrong. The composer of these movies wished to remain
anonymous. He was listed in the credits as "The Man With No Name."

>4. Somewhere in Time -- the James Bond guy

That James Bond guy's name was 007.

>5. E.T. -- Steven Spielberg

My dog has his composers mixed up, the composer was George Lucas.

>6. Brave Heart -- Mel Gibson

He was close on this one. Actually the composer was Mel's wife,
Debbie Gibson.

>7. The Magnificent Seven -- Leonard Bernstein

No, this movie was named after the guy who composed it -- 007. (see #4 above)

>8. Live and Let Die -- Paul McCartney

No, no, McCartney composed the score for the TV show "Wings."

>9. A Hard Day's Night -- The Rolling Stones

I have no idea on this one, I don't listen to Country and Western music.

>10. That Disney movie with those really nice songs

I believe he's referring to "Fantasia."

>Honorable mention: Star Wars -- Steven Spielberg

Finally, he got one right!

Sorry to pick nits (not that this is practice is never indulged in on
rec.music.movies ...) BUT: the songs on "I'm Breathless" that are taken
from the DICK TRACY score/soundtrack are Stephen Sondheim's, not Madonna's.

Hate to say it, but even though the movie was so-so, I really liked the
main theme by Harold Faltermeyer in the "Running Man." I even made a
MIDI file for it and the MT-32 (before GM) if anyone wants it.
