let's start a new thread.
how about:

James "Ole Anvil Clanker" Horner

Hell, I tend to like Horner's music, but even I am a bit tired of the Horner
Rolling Chord of Melodic Punctuation (tm). (For the best hearing of this
oft-used device, check out "Sons of Scotland" from Braveheart, during the first
statement of the main Braveheart theme.)

OK, it's not technically a nickname, but Horner could trademark this. If
Harley-Davidson can trademark the sound of their choppers, then why not?

Thus say I, and sayeth I no more.

That's a good question. After all, there's a 'Rossini Crescendo'.
Why not a 'Horner Punctuation'?

Has anyone found that article on the 'net? I'd like to read it, and it would
be easier to read it online than to track down the exact issue it appeared in.

anyway)...

I hope you mean FILM composers and not composers in general, because if you
mean composers in general, you've shown me that YOU are an incredible idiot.

I'm not a Horner hater. I've got pretty much all of his scores on CD, and
most of the bootlegs. I'd happily use him on a movie of mine (but I'd have
to sanction every note before I'd allow a sound cut.)

It's just a shame he recycles. And samples. And uses other people's scores.

And how that derivative score won an Oscar is STILL beyond me...

I'm neither a worshipper at his feet or someone who hates him, but I gotta
say the TITANIC score really left me cold (even though there are obviously 25
million CD buyers who'd disagree with me). Horner HAS done better work than
this in the past (BRAVEHEART, THE SPITFIRE GRILL, ALIENS, GORKY PARK, THE
ROCKETEER, and STAR TREK II come to mind) and will probably do better work than
this in the future.
And even though I knew TITANIC would win the Oscar, I was rooting for
Goldsmith's LA CONFIDENTIAL, which was infinitely better to my mind (and ears)
than any of the other nominees.
Oscars are not given for quality, though. We have 70 years worth of proof to
that effect...Cary Grant never got a best Actor Oscar, Hitchcock never got a
Best Director nod, and on and on and on...
Did TITANIC deserve a Best Original Score award?
I don't think so.
Does Horner?
Probably, But not for TITANIC.
But he did, and perhaps next year, someone better will win. But for right
now, Little James Horner is sitting in his corner, sticking his thumbs in Jerry
Goldsmith's pies...

It seems the Horner fans have been torn down to their last line of
defence: "well, all that may be true, but he's still rich and you're
not! Hahahaha!"
Screw off.

Whereas all the saints on rmm and the film-music lists think only of
originality and have only altruistic tendencies. They are also
internationally renowned epxerts in the field of romantic/neo-romantic
/modern/atonal/dodecaphonic and pentatonic music. They are all
experts and connoisseurs. Indeed.

No more auctions, no more sales, no more whining, no more insults, no
more foolish blabberings, no more personal attacks. Yeah, a-ha, right.

I think Horner's doing well for himself. Why be so hypocritical?

Good music is where you find it, and Horner has had his moments.
In the end, all everyone's interested is fame/money/security. At least
that's the image I get from reading posts on this newsgroup. :-)
I'd love to be proven wrong. But until then, all these verbal jabs are
at best pointless.

Let's live our lives.

Ain't it great?
