Could someone please explain how to tell the difference between the two
pressings of THE COWBOYS--the one on which the channel separation is
correct and the one on which it is reversed?
Thanks,
Jim

According to several sources when VARESE first released
the John Williams
score to "The Cowboys" they used a incorrectly mixed
master to press
the disc, later when this was discovered they went back
and corrected the
problem and repressed from the correct master.

However I'm told the only way to tell the difference is to
look at the
information on the inside matrix of the CD, if it reads

VSD5540RE
You have the correced disc,

if it reads VSD5540 you have the original version.

So, how bad is the difference? If I have the first pressing, will
Varese replace it with the corrected release? Is it even worth going
through the bother?

Did Varese have stores pull the original version once the new pressing
was released? The reason I'm asking is, can I assume that if I buy a
new copy, the sound will be correct?

And if you're saying that one has to open the CD to find out, many CD
stores will not allow you to return the CD, even if it is the wrong
pressing. What happens then?
