7. This week's top 50:

While we're only 5 months into 2008, one of the things that this
year will be remembered for is the number of singles that reclaimed
the number one spot on the singles chart after an earlier stint
at the top.

This chart phenomenon is, of course, not unheard of. While it was
a rare event in previous decades, once 2000 arrived, it happened
almost every year since, often by more than one artist. However,
what makes 2008 different is the sheer volume of chart-topping
singles that have returned to number one. With Gabriella Cilmi
returning to number one this week with "Sweet About Me", it marks
the 4th number one single in 2008 to reclaim the top spot, joining
Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love", Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" and
Flo Rida's "Low". This chart event has now reached a level of
frequency that has not been seen since 2000. In 2000, we also had
4 hits returning to the top, those being:

I TRY - Macy Gray
MUSIC - Madonna
ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS - Kylie Minogue
TEENAGE DIRTBAG - Wheatus

But with another 7 months of year to go, there's plenty of time for
2008 to exceed 2000 with the number of rebounding number one hits.
The year in which the most returning number one singles occured
during ARIA chart history was 1989 which saw 5 singles enjoy
multiple stints at the top. They were:

SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY - Fine Young Cannibals
LIKE A PRAYER - Madonna
ETERNAL FLAME - The Bangles
WIND BENEATH MY WINGS - Bette Midler
IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME - Cher

The chart success of Gabriella Cilmi's "Sweet About Me" is
interesting as the single hovered around outside the top 10
on digital sales only, then once the CD single hit record
stores, it leapt straight to number 3 and has now spent the
last 6 weeks at either number one or two. However, what is
even more remarkable is the length of time Gabriella hung
around at number 2 before hitting the acclaimed top spot again.
Traditionally, singles that return to number one do so the
week after losing the top spot, often due to a high profile
new release outselling an established number one for a week.
But Gabriella has spent 4 weeks out of the top spot before
returning to reclaim that spot. To find a song that last
spent that much time between number one spots, we have to go back
to 2002 when "The Ketchup Song" by Las Ketchup debuted at number
one but was held back at number 2 for 4 weeks in a row by Nelly
and Kelly Rowland's duet "Dilemma". After "Dilemma" finished
its 4 week run at the top, Las Ketchup reclaimed the number one
spot again.

So with Gabriella back at number one, it means that Madonna's
duet with Justin Timberlake is down to number 2 after 3 weeks
at the top.

After 8 weeks in the top 50, Usher's "Love In This Club" finally
makes the top 10 by bulleting from number 21 to 8. This is
helped by the CD single which now just hit record stores, thus
giving the song a sales boost. However, like what seems to be
happening with many new releases, some shops are not sticking
to official release dates, selling CD singles prior to their
launch dates, no doubt due to consumer pressure caused by a
single's appearance on the official chart despite not being
on sale in a physical format. With Usher, he debuted at
number 24 on the CD singles chart last week thanks to sales
ahead of the CD's official release date, and he bullets to
number 4 on the CD singles chart this week in what should
really be his first charting week on that chart, not his second.

Also making it into the top 10 for the first time this week is
Brisbane girls The Veronicas with "This Love". While CD single
sales have been lagging, increasing digital sales this week have
finally given the girls their third top 10 hit in a row from
their current double-platinum selling album "Hook Me Up".

Dropping out of this week's top 10 is Chris Brown as "With You"
drops back from number 9 to 11. However, the most spectacular
drop out of the top 10 is a song that also dives out of the top
50 at the same time. Last week, the highest selling CD single
in record shops was the Psycho Teddy hit, however it dives
to number 20 this week. With no digital sales to assist it,
it tumbles from number 5 to right out of the over all singles
chart this week. The only other times a single dropped right
out of the top 50 from a top 5 position were in 2002 with
Francesca's "Way Of The World" and in 1994 with Nirvana's
"About A Girl" - the later having has a limited release and the
former having charted in a rather unconventional manner.

There are 4 brand new hits into this week's top 50, but after
all the excitement and chart records being set in the top 10,
these low debuts don't quite stack up against that.

16. NO AIR - Jordin Sparks duet with Chris Brown
CD singles chart: #26
Digital track chart: #12

The 2007 American Idol series was won by the now 18 year-old
Jordin Sparks. Her debut commercial single, "Tattoo", went
top 10 in the US and Canada, while here in Australia, it
did even better, reaching number 5 last month. The second
single from her self-titled album is a duet with Chris Brown
titled "No Air". Internationally, it's been even more
successful than her previous single, having gone top 10
throughout much of Europe, top 3 in the US and reaching number
one in New Zealand. Here in Australia, "No Air" comes in at
number 16 this week. Note that while the single debuted at
number 26 on the CD singles chart this week, those sales were
once again due to stores violating the official release date,
so the true popularity of this song, at least in record stores,
won't be fully realised until next week's chart.

34. PARTY PEOPLE - Nelly featuring Fergie
CD singles chart: (released Saturday 31st May)
Digital track chart: #28

33 year-old American rapper Nelly, whose real name is Cornell
Haynes, first hit the charts back in 2000 with the top 20
hit "Country Grammer". Since then he's churned out 4 hit
albums - "Country Grammar" (2000), "Nellyville" (2002) and
the simulteanously-released "Sweat" and "Suit" albums from
2004. A whole bunch of hit singles were spawned from those
albums including three number ones - "Dilemma" (with Kelly
Rowland", "My Place / Flap Your Wings" and "Over And Over"
(with Tim McGraw). Nelly's fifth album, "Brass Knuckles",
is out later this year, and for the album's first single,
he's pulled out the big guns. Employing guest vocals
by Fergie, who has been part of 13 top 10 hit singles since
2003 thanks to the Black Eyed Peas and her solo career,
Nelly debuts at number 34 this week with "Party People".

43. DON'T FIGHT IT - The Panics
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #38

The Panics are a 5-piece indie rock band that formed during
2002 in Perth, but they are now based in Melbourne. Their
second album, "Sleeps Like A Curse", reached number 40 on
the albums chart in August 2005, while their third album,
"Cruel Guards" debuted at number 18 when released in
October last year. From "Cruel Guards" comes the first
ever top 50 hit single for The Panics, that being the song
"Don't Fight It" which debuts at number 43 this week.
"Don't Fight It" also appears on the music soundtrack of
the Australian TV series "Underbelly".

47. VIOLET HILL - Coldplay
CD singles chart: (not released yet)
Digital track chart: #39

The fourth and final new entry of the week comes from British
rock group, Coldplay. Formed in 1997, the group achieved
world-wide fame with the song "Yellow" which peaked at
number 5 in Australia during February 2001. While they have
only had one other top 10 hit since, that being "Speed Of
Sound" in 2005, they have been solid performers on the albums
chart. "Parachutes" went double-platinum in 2001 while
"A Rush of Blood To The Head" went 5-times platinum due to
marathon sales between 2002 and 2006. Their third album,
"X & Y", sold 4-times platinum between 2005 and 2007.
The group's 4th studio album, "Viva La Vida", is out shortly
and its first single is the track "Violet Hill" which debuts
at number 47 this week here in Australia and sits at number
8 this week on the charts in the UK.
