7. This week's top 50:
Britney Spears safely spends a second week at number one with "Baby One
More Time" as Silverchair's massive debut at number 3 last week with
"Anthem For The Year 2000" drops back to number 5 this week. Meanwhile
Shania Twain has scored three top 2 hits in succession as "That Don't
Impress Me Much" moves up to number 2 this week. However, the big
action this week is at number 3...
Back in July 1996, an unknown Brisbane band called "Savage Garden",
consisting of vocalist Darren Hayes and guitarist/keyboardist Daniel
Jones, debuted on the Australian singles charts at number 27 with the
highly radio-aired song "I Want You". That song peaked at number 4,
and whoever thought that it would be all downhill after the big success
of their debut single, would have been majorly mistaken. Their next two
singles, "To The Moon And Back" and "Truly, Madly, Deeply", topped the
Australian singles charts in early 1997, while their debut delf-titled
album ended up as the biggest selling album in Australia for 1997.
However, their success was not limited to Australia. The American
music market, one of the toughest for Australian artists to break
into, embraced the music of Savage Garden. In late 1997, "I Want
You" went top 5, and early last year, "Truly, Madly, Deeply" topped
the U.S. charts - the only Australian single this decade to do so.
Success came for them across Europe, in the UK, and Asia. Some of their
singles are up to two years old and are still currently charting strongly
in countries around the world, and their self-titled album is still
selling like crazy, with worldwide sales well in excess of 11 million
copies. However, this week, sees the first Savage Garden single on the
Australian charts for over a year, as "The Animal Song" crashes into the
charts at number 3. Poised for release in the U.S., this single is
lifted from the soundtrack to the movie "The Other Sister", which has a
web site at http://www.theothersister.com/. As an exclusive service to
readers of this posting, the lyrics to "The Animal Song" are included in
the lyrics section further below.
Metallica's "Garage Inc." album yielded them a number 11 hit back last
November with "Turn The Page". This week, their new release from
that album, "Whiskey In The Jar", comes in at number 14. Meanwhile,
from the soundtrack to the movie "Rush Hour" comes this week's new number
32 hit. "How Deep Is Your Love", a former top 3 U.S. hit for Dru Hill
featuring Redman, is not a cover of the Bee Gees' original. However,
that Bee Gees' song was recently covered by a group called Portrait in
1995 and more successfully by Take That in 1996 - the last song that group
recorded before breaking up.
Stay tuned next week to see if one of the biggest hits of the year,
by Britney Spears, can spend a third week at number one, or if Shania
Twain manages to score two chart topping singles from her current chart
topping album "Come On Over", or maybe Savage Garden's number 3 debut
with "The Animal Song" was just a sample of bigger things to come next
week as they try and score the third number one single of their career
in Australia out of a total of just 6 single releases.

9. This week's feature song lyrics
-------------------------------
THE ANIMAL SONG - Savage Garden
-------------------------------
When superstars and cannonballs are running through your head
And television freak show cops and robbers everywhere
Subway makes me nervous, people pushing me too far
I've got to break away
So take my hand now
CHORUS:
Cause I want to live like animals
Careless and free like animals
I want to live
I want to run through the jungle
With the wind in my hair and the sand at my feet
I don't have any difficulties keeping to myself
Feelings and emotions better left up on the shelf
Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie
Which one is more human
There's a thought, now you decide
Compassion in the jungle
Compassion in your hands, yeah, yeah
Would you like to make a run for it
Would you like to take my hand, yeah, yeah
(CHORUS)
Sometimes this life can get you down
It's so confusing
There's so many rules to follow
And I feel it
Cause I just run away in my mind
Superstars and cannonballs are running through your head
Television freak show cops and robbers everywhere
Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie
Which one is more human
There's a thought, now you decide
Compassion in the jungle
Compassion in your hands, yeah, yeah
Would you like to make a run for it
Would you like to take my hand, yeah, yeah
(CHORUS)

WHISKEY IN THE JAR - Metallica
------------------------------
As I was going over the Cork and Kerry Mountains
I saw Captain Farrell, and his money he was countin'
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said "Stand and deliver, or the devil he may take ya"
I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money, yeah, and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she loved me, no, never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman, yeah, for you know she tricked me easy
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber
Takin' my Molly with me, but I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired my pistols, and I shot him with both barrels
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Yeah, whiskey, yo, whiskey...
Oh-oh, ya
Now some men like a fishin', but some men like the fowlin'
Some men like to hear, to hear the cannonball a-roarin'
But me, I like sleepin', `specially in my Molly's chamber
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Whiskey in the jar-o
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, hey
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ya.
