Someone told me there is an earlier version of this song? Who did it? The
Huey Lewis song by the same title is not the same song. I am asking about
the Celine Dion song.
Thanks

Back to the mid-80s:

Jennifer Rush' version of the C.Dion-song is very good.

Yes, Huey Lewis did a different song with the same name,
and Frankie Goes to Hollywood yet another one.

The original was by Jennifer Rush in 1985 on her self-titled CD. In my
opinion, it's by far the best. She has a voice, or perhaps I should say
a vocal style, far more suited to the song than Celine's empty vocal
hystrionics. "Let's see, how many notes can I hit on each vowel sound?".
Ick. Not to mention the fact that Celine's recording has the treble
cranked so high that, when I play the song at dances, I have to dial back
the high and mid-high about 8dB.

I'll get off my soapbox now ;^)

Before that, Jennifer Rush did (the original?) version. Still the best
version in my mind, followed by Dion's...

But Jennifer Rush's version is the original, not Air Supply's. She co-wrote
the song with Mary Applegate, Candy De Rouge and Gunther Mende (whoever
these other people are).

In the UK it was released in June 1985, took 3 months to reach the top 40,
then having got there went to #1 and stayed there for 5 weeks, becoming the
last single to sell over a million for 6 years (Bryan Adams being the next
to manage it).

It was also NM #1 for 7 weeks (one of 12 singles to achieve this feat).

Air Supply's version appears on the eponymous 1985 album, which also
contains "Just As I Am", plus some much better tracks, including "Sunset",
"I Can't Let Go", "Great Pioneer" and "Never Fade Away".

All of these last 4 tracks were written by Graham Russell, and it is strange
that Arista decided to release cover versions for singles instead of their
own material. "I Can't Let Go" and "Black And Blue" also credit Billy
Steinberg, who usually writes with Tom Kelly and wrote lyrics to many big
hits including "Like A Virgin", "True Colors" and "Alone" (Heart).

The only downside of this album is that they couldn't work out how to end
many of the tracks, and they so they just fade the music, which is not
really appropriate for a band renowned for quiet beginnings and big endings.
This includes "Never Fade Away" which duly does so, and is the last track on
the album (which was their last one to achieve any real success).

Their downfall coincided with the rise of Whitney Houston, which suggested
that Arista were incapable of having more than one big act at a time.

For those of us who happen to think that Celine Dion is an incredibly gifted
vocalist - - don't trip on your way down!

If your going to be sarcastic - expect to get it back!!

So there!

It is undeniable that Celine Dion has a good voice - but she should stick
to singing her own stuff and not copying of others.
I certainly agree that the original by Jennifer Rush is by far the best.
This was one of the biggest selling songs across the atlantic from the states
in the 80's. I think that because it was'nt such a smash in the US and Canada
as it was in Europe and the rest of the world, miss Dion must have seen this
as the best chance at gaining more popularity in the states which is pretty
sad. IMHO she totally destroyed a classic song missing some of the key
notes of the original. It has also been covered by many other artists
including Nana Moushouri and Julio Iglesias. There should be some kind of
a law about covering older hits especially if it is as recent as Jennifer
Rush's Power of Love.

I agree with Rodney - Celine Dion is a talented singer, but her version
of "The Power Of Love" is inferior to Jennifer Rush's, IMHO. However,
I wouldn't blame the discrepancies between Rush's version and Dion's
version on Celine Dion - Celine's track is virtually oozing of the
David Foster influence, who produced the track.

And to clarify, yes, Jennifer Rush's "The Power Of Love" was not a
smash in the United States at the time, but it was a multi-week #1
in Canada, as in Europe and the U.K.
