Does anyone know if the Rock Record (the book that supposedly lists
every rock record ever made with personel, release #'s for US/UK,etc.)
is available in database form?

Thanks,

dap

Also, has a second edition (post 1981) been published? My first ed.
is useful -- especially for learning bouts the old albums from
before my time -- but it'd be nice to have an update in hand.

I have the third edition (published in mid 80's, I'm not sure exactly when).
The author used a PC and dBASE III to generate the lists, so there should
be possible to make the data available.

Yes, a third edition was published that went beyond 1981, or so I understood,
but I've never found it or looked to hard. As I recall though, they all three
had slightly different titles, Rock Record, New Rock Record and ???????.
I have New Rock Record, which seems to include most or all stuff up to 1981.
There are things I wished I could find in here I can't, mostly Euro-progressive
and German stuff, things that are obscure to beigin with. And it would be nice
if there was more jazz coverage. Anyway, the latest edition I'd hard of only
went up to about 1983 or so, but I have a hard time imagining a project like
this being abandoned once they'd collected all the old stuff, updates would
be a minor task.

Anyway, I'd recently thought of writing to Terry Hounsome and asking him if
it's on database. It's obvious it must be for the book to even exist, but
the real question is, is it commercially available? This seems like it would
make a great reference for radio stations, djs, etc. Never got around to
asking him yet. If anyone has, let me know. I even know someone who sells
software to radio stations in the US, so I have a lead on a distribution
angle if it hasn't been seriously considered yet.

I have a huge database file of artists/releases and am trying to build this
and share it. It's mostly progressive and experimental stuff, with losts of
Bowie and punk other stuff, and I'm trying to add to it. If anyone out there
has huge databases (this one is 3600+ entries) and wants to trade data drop
me some mail. It has Artist/release/year/label/label#, and I wish it had all
ther rest of the info like musicians, and song titles. Anyway, if anyone has
databases they want to trade or share, let me know.
