Gads. I just bought the Red, HOt & Blue compilation CD and video. I
have a couple Pogues CD's as well, but I finally got a live action shot of
Shane McGowan....hell, he's even uglier than his CD picture. He must be one
of the uglier musicians in the world. Anyone else have any input on this one?

I was looking through the latest Spin (with U2 on the cover, and the
hilarious paragraph about the number of enormous statues of animals
in Wisconsin,) and saw a pretty glowing review of Catherine Wheel.

Can anyone tell me anything about them, from their history to reviews
of what they've done? Even stuff like: 'way cool, man.'

thanks,
Dan

Shane is indeed ugly. Mojo Nixon has a song about him, in fact. Since
Shane has few teeth, the song is actually about his dentist.

"Shane's dentist don't work too hard..."

I bought the CD, _Ferment_, on the strength of the single "Black
Metallic", and the recommendation of one of my record store
friends, and of course the oceans of hype the press has generated
about them.

And I was *profundly* unimpressed.

These guys aren't, like, _bad_ or anything, but I can't hear
anything on this record to distinguish them from the rest
of the heard of shoegazers (and mind you, I like this kind
of stuff a lot). Long songs, layers of swirling, distorto (TM)
guitar, and muffled vocals have been done *a lot* these past
couple of years, and these guys, while competent, just don't
blow my mind to the extent I'd been led to expect.

Even the "loud as hell then slow it down to a whisper" thing
has been done elsewhere (and better: cf. Smashing Pumpkins).

My reccomendation: listen to some tracks at the store first,
if you can. Then go buy Moose's "Sonny of Sam" and
Ride's "Smile", and MBV's "Isn't Anything." You'll be a much
happier person for it...

I thought "Catherin Wheel" was a dance peice for which David Byrne did a
double-album soundtrack.

IMHO: Some of the ugliest musicians I can think of:

Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)
Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones)
Axl Rose (Guns & Roses)
Frank Zappa (In the seventies. He's actually much better look-
ing now.)
Janis Joplin

Johnny Rotten/Lydon

The guy from Midnight Oil- Peter Garrett (?)

'Have to disagree with you on the muffled voice. Sure the instruments are
loud, but Rob Dickinson has one of the best vocals I have heard from a
'shoegazing' band and you can actually pick out the lyrics. Go figure :-)

>couple of years, and these guys, while competent, just don't
>blow my mind to the extent I'd been led to expect.

They sure did blow my mind. What was strange was that the first song that I
heard that blew me away from CW was "Let Me Down Again", a song off of the
Black Metallic ep. I eventually got into "Black Metallic" though and the
rest of the album and the other 4 eps. Listen to the album a few more times,
it really is a great album. And say behind MBV and Ride, I think Catherine
Wheel are the heir apparent to the (I hate to say it) "shoegazing scene".

>Even the "loud as hell then slow it down to a whisper" thing
>has been done elsewhere (and better: cf. Smashing Pumpkins).

If your referring to a track called 'Ferment' that was on the album, I'd agree
that it was sort of drawn out. But if your referring to the slow part in
the full length (I stress full-length because the radio edits are just crap)
version of Black Metallic (7:19), I beg to differ. I thinks it's one of the
most appropiate song to put it in, especially after the very anthemic, epic
one and a half minute guitar solo that must have been touch by God.

>My reccomendation: listen to some tracks at the store first,

Great recommendations, by the way. Also add Seam, Field Mice, and CW.
And do try to get a version of CW's "Let Me Down Again" (live or otherwise).
IMO, it comes as close to the perfect three minute song as Ride's "Vapour
Trail" does.

Very True. Zappa is one of many rock stars whom I think have aged gracefully.
Pete Townsend is fairly stately looking in his late 40's and he used to be an
UGLY motherfucker. Charly Watts of the Stones is a rather dapper character
these days (I can't say as much for the haggard looking glimmer twins, Mick and
Keith)! I'm sure there's others I can't think of now.

just saw Rush play at the Meadowlands on June 19th. had pretty good
seats but used binnoculars anyway. I like checking out the stage setups
real close. Noticed that they had a guy behind the drummer (Peart) (sp)
diong some of the stage lighting/theatrics. IMHO a very great show!
Started out being slighly out (I blame that on the crew) but after
the 3-4 song (Big Money) they sounded awesome! Did 3 medleys of all
their great songs. Tix were a B-day present from my brother. Well
worth the trip.

Often described as "having a face that only a mother
can love" seeing Shane in the flesh is even more
horrific. Having seen the Pogues in concert on a
couple of occasions, his lack of teeth makes one
wonder whether he evere brushes.

Imagine talking face to face with him, especially
after a concert when he is sweaty and inebriated. As
is the norm at Pogue concerts, Shane will announce
the 'next song' in a language all of his own, which
is then translated into English by one of the other
bands members.

As if it's not difficult enough trying to understand
what he is singing !

Richard.

Of course, I'm sure a number of our enthusiastic young posters are
happy that a copy of their picture doesn't accompany the numerous
followups to this particular thread. I don't suppose we'll be fortunate
enough to have any of them actually speculate in print why such a
question [with its implication that the relative beauty of any given
singer is at all important, or the curious fact that the may be either
equating ugly singers with ugly styles or the possibility that they
may be nominating beautiful singers with less than beautiful faces] would
even occur here in an age where our primary contact with performers has
shifted so decisively towards the visual. Probably too much of a stretch
compared with the ease of the usual "greatest rock song ever written
(actually an excuse for me to name my favorite band)" style of posting.

So I'll mention it instead.

anecdote 1: one of the particularly perilous areas for visualization
is the area of Indian classical music. It exposes one's biases rather
quickly, since [for me, anyway] many of the most beautiful voices come
from the throats of pretty venerable womyn.

observation 1: it would appear that a regular thread here involves the
celebration of idiosyncracy (style, approach, subject matter). Why
might it be that such idiosyncracy would not extend to the physical
appearance of the performers themselves?

hope 1: May the world spare us the shallowness and cruelty with which
we pass judgment here when the time comes for *us* to be judged.

Carry on, boys.

I always thought Joey Ramone should have this title. The man looks like

Shane's no Adonis, I'll grant you. But the world record for ugliest
entire band was set by the Motors, who in addition to all being ugly
covered a well-rounded scope of ugliness: they had an ugly chubby guy,
a gawky, skinny ugly guy, a thuggish ugly guy and an ugly drummer.
Check out the cover of "Approved by the Motors"; it features a close-up
of the four of them, which may explain why it wasn't a big seller.

Well, her bands kept dying off, she got married and stuff like that.

Last saw her on one of the comedy/variety TV shows a year or so ago,
but didn't catch any conversation.

I hope she get back to some serious music, she's got some talent
if she doesn't get bogged down in middle-aged teenage angst like
Joan Jett. I don't know that I'd call Chrissie ugly, if so she
compensates well.

Heh. The story is even better than that. Due to their rather, ahem,
uncommercial appearance, the record company had the original cover
photo replaced by some non-figurative stuff on later pressings!

Btw, The Motors had their roots in the early/mid 70s pub rock scene,
which probably is the ugliest genre ever. Ian Dury, Sean Tyla, Ian
Gomm... No contest.

The Mentors win, hands down, and I've never even seen them with their
hoods off. They've all got huge, nasty beer guts, so of course they
perform shirtless. Just thinking of the stage lights casting big
ominous gut-shadows across their instruments serves as a wonderful
appetite suppressant... And don't forget, true beauty lies within,
yet another reason why the 'tors reign supreme in an Ugly Contest.
Shane McG rates as a mere sickly rotting alkie by comparison. Has he
ever sung of sh*t towers or golden showers? I thought not.

BTW, a friend who works a at video post-production facility in LA
had an interesting Mentors story. He noticed one of his co-workers
frequently attired in a Mentors tour t-shirt. He asked the guy if
he liked the Mentors. Said co-worker squirmed a bit and finally
admitted that he is the Mentors' bass player. That's right, "Dr.
Heathen Scum" edits training videos for a living! According to my
friend, Dr. Scum is very quiet and (understandably) very reluctant
to talk about being in the Mentors. And yes, he is supposedly pretty
ugly ("but a nice guy," I'm told).

Makes you wonder why nobody thought of that _before_ the first
pressing!

Good point. It's pretty scary to think of a bunch that makes Nick
Lowe, by comparison, look like a teen idol. (And I'm not the only
one that occurred to: the inner sleeve of the UK "Labour of Lust" had
a very Tiger Beat sort of photo of Nick...)
