Yep. Cheesy in the extreme, especially because Jewel has a great voice
and sounds better live than on tape. Well, that's marketing. I think she knew
it too. I was waiting for her to make a face or stick her tongue out during
the "home of the brave" part. Heh.
And the MilliVanilliPlayback award goes to: Jewel!

Yeah, she was better than many I've heard, even if I do find her
a bit whiny in general, and in her anthem rendition. But yeah, it
did look rather obviously lip-synched. And what a lame set of
commercials...

Jewel did Great (but that is exactly what I expected)
It was most likely a recording (no matter what scag says)
She IS very talented
She has a great rack
She is human not a God and most likely enjoys sex, frequently (sorry scab)
I just wanted to express my anger at this post. If it was Jewel's voice,
and we all know it was, then what's the problem? Who cares if she sang it
live or not, there is not denying her talent, so why do you have to
critisize her and look in detail for every fault you can find? She's only
human.

Everybody lip-synced, from the Beach Boys to all the performers in the
halftime show. It's a procuction decision and the performers have
nothing to do with it. And, yes, she did a nice job.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that all such stadium anthem
performances have to be taped first and lipsynched, because it's nearly
impossible for the performer to hear herself sing it live, and that
makes botches more likely. The halftime show is taped, too.
Yes, it was a fine rendition by Jewel, IMO. I also liked the way she
held her salute throughout. Respectful and very classy.

I've seen Jewel live, and let me tell you, she was not lipsynching. She's
got a kick ass voice and we should all admire her for that. So let's stop
bashing her for lipsynching, I would have done it to..

The National Anthem is *never* sung live at the Super Bowl. I believe it
has something to do with the "echo" effect from the stadium being
distracting for the singers. I remember this topic way back when Whitney
Houston sung it years ago - anyone know which year that was? She
lip-synched then, too.

Excuse me? Are you comparing Jewel to the spice girls, those untalented

That was an illusion. Sound travels faster than light. :-)
Whitney Houston lip-sank the NA in 1991 during the Gulf War. I figure
ever since she made it respectable, everybody would do it.

I think you missed the entire point of that person's post. If you read
it again you will see that it was pointed out that the person was
waiting to see Jewel make a face or stick out her tongue. This would
indicate that the poster thought it wasn't Jewel who was behind the
decision to lip sync. In fact you could surmise from this that the
person thought Jewel was unhappy about lip synching. SO in fact the
person may have been PRO Jewel and not ANTI Jewel as you have assumed.

Two words: Spice Girls.
Why it matters is that you can't actually tell if a person can sing until
you hear it *live*. Right now, there are so many artists, from the Spice
Girls to Third Eye Blind to Sugar Ray, that can't sing a note that it's
pathetic that they made it this far. And you can thank studio recording
"technology" for it.
As it turns out, Jewel actually *can* sing (unlike almost every other
artist out there these days), so it *really* pathetic that we weren't
given a live rendition.

Okay so she wasn't lipsynching....

Ummm, so you would do it as well.... so she was lipsynching.....
She obviously was. But that takes nothing away from a great rendition. The
Anthem is always prerecorded, and her pre-recording was the best I've heard
in a long time.
And she does have a fine chest.

100%, positively, without a doubt, Jewel lipsynced to the national
anthem. So what? I have seen her live and she is a better singer in
person than she is recorded. Obviously, the Superbowl brass forced her to
lipsync. It is still, however, an opportunity for exposure which Jewel
could not refuse. Lipsyncing the anthem does not detract from her
tremendous talent or cleavage.

THANK YOU!
I can't believe no one else mentioned this very important point!
Unfortunately most people, and more specifically Americans, aren't
aware that placing your hand over your heart is the respectful thing
to do during the Anthem. I have seen VERY FEW ever do it in my many
years of watching events where the anthem was sung.
Just ending 14 1/2 years in the military I know that this information
was something drilled into us for obvious reasons. Too bad the
civilian population I am now a part of isn't as well educated on such
a simple act of patriotism.
I thought Jewel did a great job, lip sync or not, and her proper
respect for the event raised her a great deal in my estimation!
Bill
P.S.: On a kinda related note I thought the budweiser lizards were
introduced WAY too soon and the whole 3-part enactment was a big let
down from what they had built it up to be!! It was still overall
pretty funny I guess but they could have done SO much better!
The ferret was pretty cool though....heh heh....

That's true. I was simply pointing out the fact that in 30+ years of
TV viewing this act was a rare occurence from my observations.
And as far as appearance - she didn't have to do it but did,
regardless of whether someone coached her as to the custom or not. She
may have been forced to lip sync, a stupid tradition others have
covered much better, but this was of her own choosing, and she chose
correctly.
It's not a huge deal and she won't be Time's "Person" of the Year but
she still gets points as far as I'm concerned.
To each their own I guess.
Bill

Uhh, I was already a Jewel fan for her musical talent before her Super
Bowl appearance. This post wasn't about that. I just said that her
action raised her just a little bit in my estimation. I never stated
what I already thought of her because it wasn't important to the idea
behind the post.
So here ya go:
I thought her rendition was far better than most I've heard over the
years and she's obviously a very talented singer who will hopefully be
around for a very long time.
There, hopefully that identifies my interests as far as which of the
"Jewel fan groups" I'm in as well.
Bill
Well, I'm glad we're on the same side then....

Ok: story:
1. Born, Payson, Utah
2. Moved, when very young to Homer Alaska
3. When she was 19 (I think) she moved to San Diego
Therefore she's been living there for about 4 years, so she calls it home.
She's never lived in Canada.

Well, we could always sing the anthem in pitch black, and then Jewel could
be (gasp) naked for all you know, so everyone would be happy and no one

btw, wha't the point of this conversation?
I answered that to someone else too.....She was born in Payson Utah, she
moved when she was like 2 to Homer Alaska, and she hitchhiked to San Diego
when she was 19. Does that clarify it? If you dont believe me, check out

I don't know if it was synced or not, but you are right about the post

interviews causing me to do double takes cuz it looked funny. But then
it seemed to correct.
That pissed me off, too. Still, she looked damn good. And Denver won!

There's a difference, you know... the superbowl isn't amplified.
So Canadians are dumb or something? That's right, we don't have time to do
book-learnin' cause we gotta build our igloos up here where it's 50 below

i didn't witness the incident, but i've heard that adams sang the "old"
version of the anthem, which, instead of "from far and wide," has "and
stand on guard"... my world book from '91 also has this version (when
was this change implemented?), so i don't think adams is really at fault
sound in '99!
