The initial bit...
------------------
In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking
out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I'll be going through the list one by one
starting with the Top 10, describing why I like them etc. First the Top 10
in alpha order, followed by the remaining 40 in the same way.
The Websites are now available from the Web version of this posting avaiable
from Sonic State (www.sonicstate.com) or my homepage. Listings for a couple
of IRC channels for interactive chat about pop music are listed below still.
Got a laserdisc player? Thinking about getting one? Want to read some reviews?
Then get to the following Websites. The first one has the first of the new
releases from Odyssey (Toys, Miracle on 34th Street, and Halloween),
and the second has reviews of the latest Pioneer releases, with the first two
Beverly Hills Cop films coming shortly.

CHART TIME! :
-------------
(* - my current favourites)
(!!! - Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) - Repeat., ie. a re-release)
40 NEW ENTRY : Wedding Present - Montreal
39 (26) FALLER : Damage - Forever :O ===
38 (23) FALLER : Mary Kiani - 100%
37 (32) FALLER : Spacehog - In The Meantime
36 NEW ENTRY : Virus - Moon
35 (31) FALLER : Warren G featuring Adina Howard
- What's Love Got To Do With It? (R)
34 (29) FALLER : Jamiroquai - Cosmic Girl *
33 NEW ENTRY : Arkarna - House on Fire
32 NEW ENTRY : Mr Jack - Wiggly World
31 (25) FALLER : Beautiful South - Don't Marry Her *
30 (21) FALLER : QFX - Over and Over
29 (20) FALLER : Puff Johnson - Over and Over
28 (13) FALLER : Erasure - In My Arms *
27 NEW ENTRY : Thunder - Don't Wait Up
This is Thunder's first single in September 1995 when they hit No.26 with
a cover of the Python Lee Jackson & Rod Stewart song, "In a Broken Dream".
Don't Wait Up is a very unremarkable song with the only noticeable difference
between this and the last time we heard from the band, being that the lead
singer has had a haircut.
26 NEW ENTRY : Enigma - Beyond the Invisible
Last time we heard from Enigma was the single "Age of Loneliness" which made
No.21 in September 1994, which was much better than their dire "Return to
Innocence" single which did a lot better.
This new single is just too weird, and I don't like it.
25 (15) FALLER : MC Lyte - Cold Rock a Party
24 (17) FALLER : Mark Morrison - Horny :O ===
23 (11) FALLER : Orbital - Satan
22 (12) FALLER : Lightning Seeds - Sugar Coated Iceberg *
21 (16) FALLER : Robert Miles featuring Maria Nayler - One & One *
20 (19) FALLER : The Prodigy - Breathe
19 (14) FALLER : Kavana - I Can Make You Feel Good
18 NEW ENTRY : The Outhere Brothers - Let Me Hear You Say 'Ole Ole'
'Ole Ole'. There, I've said it. Now please drop out of the chart!
17 (18) CLIMBER : Whitney Houston - Step By Step :O ===
God knows how this one made No.5 in the Chart Show's Top 10 chart, but
then perhaps it was temporary divine intervention for this gospel-ish claptrap.
16 NEW ENTRY : Ginuwine - Pony
If this is the record I'm thinking of, then the bloke doing it sounds like he
keeps burping all the way through it. I get the same effect going down the pub
and drinking heavily, and it's a lot more fun :)
15 (3) FALLER : East 17 - Hey Child
Oh how the mighty have fallen...
For those not in the know, at 9am on Friday 17th of this month, Brian Harvey
said in a radio interview that it's safe to take drugs, especially Ecstacy,
and not only did he once take 12 tablets in one night, but he also went for
a drive after taking them...
At 4pm that day, and no doubt prompted by someone with a brain, he ate his
words, but by then the damage was done. Many radio and TV stations dropped their
single from the playlist, and stopped inviting them onto TV shows...
The newspapers on Saturday morning announced that he had officially been kicked
out of the band. Mind you, it was clear to see the effect that the drug had
on him. It clearly makes you want to shave your head, grow a gross goatee beard
and do all those weird hand gestures that he does in the videos.
Seriously though, the first to jump on the 'I'm-glad-he's-been-kicked-out'
bandwagon was the parents of Leah Betts who died after taking the drug on
her 18th birthday. Also mentioned in the papers was how a few people so far
this year have also died after taking Ecstacy.
However, considering that more people die each year after an allergic reaction
from taking asprin, rather than the allergic reaction to taking Ecstacy, and
that no-one exactly straps these kids down and forces them to take it - they
do so of their own free will, and that if they choose to take it they know that
they're risking their life...but hey it's an election year, and it's a vote
winner to condemn this drug in particular.
Of course, I hope that the drug never ever plays a part in my life, but
perhaps if the media didn't keep telling us how bad Ecstacy is for you, perhaps
not as many kids would be as tempted to try it?
Little bit of politics, little bit of politics...
14 NEW ENTRY : Byron Stingly - Get Up (Everybody)
13 (8) FALLER : Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart
12 NEW ENTRY : NAS - Street Dreams
11 (6) FALLER : Spice Girls - 2 Become 1
10 (4) FALLER : Lisa Stansfield vs The Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
- People Hold On (The Bootleg Mixes) :O ===
9 (9) NON-MOVER : En Vogue - Don't Let Go (Love)
8 NEW ENTRY : Reef - Come Back Brighter
7 (5) FALLER : Madonna - Don't Cry For Me Argentina
6 NEW ENTRY : Suede - Saturday Night *
This could easily have turned up as record of the week, but there's one to
come later which is even better.
This is the third single from "Coming Up", following "Trash" and "Beautiful
Ones" and is quite a slow song, and one that everyone deserves to hear at
least once.
5 (10) *HIGHEST CLIMBER* : No Mercy - Where Do You Go
Peter Sarstedt goes Latino..sort of. Although the main line of the track
is 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely', it's completely different and there's
definitely no 'for a laugh, a ha-ha-ha'.
4 (2) FALLER : Backstreet Boys - Quit Playing Games (with my heart) :O ===
3 (4) CLIMBER : Texas - Say What You Want *
The first new single from Texas in three years, and certainly the first since
my charts began, and it wins the vote for most-hyped-single-of-the-week-by
a-Radio-1-DJ.
Last week, love him or hate him, Chris Evans continued to profess about his
love for the lead singer, Sharleen.
Texas have performed this song twice on TFI Friday in recent weeks, and
received the biggest hyping when he continually told listeners to go out and
buy this single only, including getting the co-presenters (definitely a case
of 'jobs a good un' the wages they're on) to each go out and buy a copy and
bring back their receipt to prove this wasn't another freebie for them.
The next day, they spent around 20 minutes talking about it with the members
of the crew each detailing the shop where they bought it.
This sort of thing probably won't last long though, as Chris Evans will be
leaving Radio 1 from March 27th as his boss, Matthew Bannister, won't let
him have Friday's off to do TFI Friday. While I do like the radio show, I'm
glad that the favourite to replace him is the late-night DJ Mark Radcliffe.
Any DJ who spends a whole radio show interviewing Frank Sidebottom is okay
by me :)
2 (1) FALLER : Tori Amos - Professional Widow (It's Got To Be Big) (R)
1 *HIGHEST NEW ENTRY* : White Town - Your Woman * !!! *1st Week At No.1*
This is the first hit single from White Town, who have had singles out in
the past, but I don't recall hearing them before.
White Town is Jyoti Mishra, and this single sounds like it could've come out
of the early 80's which is my favourite era for music. The vocals sound as
if they've been digitised, and synthesisers are the order of the day for the
tune, with the addition of a sampled violin riff (if violins can be 'riffed'),
and a black and white video to accompany it all.
White Town have a Website and email address, both of which are listed on my
WWW links page, but if you're reading the text version of this, they're
reachable at :
WWW page : http://www.white-town.com
Email : white...@dial.pipex.com
The Webpage features a discography, a biography and samples. If you get in
contact with them, please tell them you saw the address on my music chart!

Dominator's Top 10 of 1996
===========================
4. Lush - Single Girl
=====================
Lush have become one of my favourite bands in the last few years, ever since
I heard the atmospheric "Sweetness and Light" in the early 90s. In fact the
whole 'Gala' album was very ambient.
Now they've gone for more of a rock sound, notching up three almost-Top 20
hits in 1996, with "Single Girl" being the best of them.
Single Girl made No.21 in January, Ladykillers reached No.22 in March, and
in July, they made No.21 with 500 (Shake Baby Shake).
Lead singer, Miki Berenyi got one of my votes last year for 'babe of the year',
and overall, if you like their singles from last year, buy the album,
"Love Life". It won't disappoint.
