Radio can play the hell out of "In The Meantime" but it just doesn't get
old; there are at least three other songs on RESIDENT ALIEN that are just
as strong.
Get hogged.

Aside from the first song "in the meantime" which is more of an Iggy Pop
sound than anything else, the rest of the album (obligatory IMHO) is
utter crap. Nowhere else on the album is there anything even remotely
Bowie-ish. Rather, it sounds like a terrible attempt to be Guns n Roses.
This album was so lousy I havent even been able to bring myself to give
it that "second chance". Singing about space (in an utterly unoriginal
and lame way), and littering songs with swirly little keyboard
"spaceship" sounds does not justify a comparison to early Bowie. In fact
now that I have heard the album, the comparison makes me quite angry.
SPACEHOG's album has all the depth and intrigue of a Nelson album with
its "ooh baby" lyrics...ugh!!! If these fools want to hear good bands
with heavily Bowie influenced sound maybe they should check out Peter
Murphy, Suede, or Pulp (to a lesser degree).

(P.S. Pulp doesn't sound like Bowie at all. They sound a bit like the
Berlin stuff, but they are much poppier and twisted. Great band though.
Jarvis is really cool.)
>I have to say something about this. I first heard of SPACEHOG a few weeks

I was one of the early posters about Spacehog. Spacehog has
definately been influenced by Bowie- this doesn't neccessarrily mean
they sound like him. If you need proof listen to the end of
"Spacehog" and pick out the "come on come on" sounding exactly like it
did in Bowie's "Hang On To Yourself".
All of this aside, Spacehog stands on its own talent. The music is
fun, with fun not-so-serious lyrics. Their hooks are simple but
catchy. It's great guitar pop. I love their glam and their over the
top style. In the least its a joy to hear some positive FUN rock when
the latest fasion is
"the-world-is-a-rotten-cesspool-so-fuck-off-I-never-wanted-to-be-a-rock-star-anyway."
trite. Nothing on their album is greatly original but it is
entertaining which is one the things music used to be. Perhaps they
will grow into a more mature band on their second album. For now I'm
very content to listen to their very infectious rocky sound.
BTW, "Spacehog" may be a silly name but wasn't it Bowie who came up
with "Ziggy Stardust"? Silly indeed!

Oh, boy. Here we go. As much as I hate so-called buzz bands, i gotta say
that spacehog is great. very refreshing. their album does not suck. my
brother saw them live in nyc and said they we alot of fun, taking the
piss out of themselves, so lighten up, dude.
i am a spacehog fan. i'm just pissed that they are not touring texas, so
that by the time they do get to texas, it'll probably be a fucking
stadium show. typical
sex: oh yes!
Doubtful that they will ever come around again. They are playing two shows
here in SF both at only mid-sized clubs. Hopefully they will go away and not
come back after that. Really, they are lousy...but my only point was that they
sound nothing like Bowie, and that there is nothing refreshing or new about
them. To lighten up I would have to give a **** in the first place. They
are just kind of irritating...like a gnat buzzing around your face (I think
that is where the term "buzz" clip came from...irritating new bands that
wont go away).
cheers...Interference
Spacehog blows. Perhaps they should call it a 'breeze' clip. Nice analogy
to a fart. Trendy stupid amatuers. Bouncing brainless bozos. Boring,
boring, boring.
No wonder attention spans are going down, too much shit, not enough
substance. Many copies yet so few originals, IMNSHO.

When I first heard Pulp on the radio, I didn't really get the Bowie
connection. When I first saw Jarvis, I thought maybe the comparisons arose
because Jarvis and David both look like they come from the same planet (you
know to one, where all the guys are thin kinda-weird-looking English sex
gods).
HOWEVER, having listened extensively to the Different Class album, the Bowie
similarities have gradually become more apparent. Certainly, lyrically, Jarvis
is very much in the clever-clever style Bowie often uses. And musically, I
would say there are traces of the Berlin period, Aladdinsane and early Bowie
(particularly late 60's). There is one song on Different Class whose name
eludes me (the one that talks about leaving your brain in a field in
Hampstead) that reminds me of the Space Oddity album (particularly Memory of a
Free Festival).
Other trivial points of comparison:
1. After his initial breakthrough, Bowie seemed to want to forget about his
pre-Space Oddity stuff. Some of it came back to haunt him (remember the
Laughing Gnome?). They same thing is happening with Pulp. The record company
has just released a compilation of their early stuff and on TV last weekend,
Jarvis advised people not to buy it, comparing it to love letters you wrote
when you were ten and saying it just wasn't very good.
2. In the same interview, Jarvis admitted that he was afraid of Americans and
said he was keeping their tour dates a secret because "it's full of nutters
over there and they've all got access to guns".
Slan libh,
Dara.
I think Jarvis Cocker looks more like a younger Mark E. Smith personally
Jarvis is now trying to be rough like Mark E. Smith as well

There's been quite a buzz over SPACEHOG lately.
Antony Langdon of the HOGS had this to say recently:
łI think of it as futuristic rock with a downhome, barnyard feel. Itąs our
sort of visceral reaction to the last six years of music in America, which
has been largely the `grunge thing.ą Itąs started to become a bit diluted
and pathetic and also, itąs started to take itself way too seriously. To
me, music was at its greatest when people could go up their own asses and
do things conceptually, when they could put on ridiculously huge shows,
and do everything to excess, flyiną around in jets with bunches of chicks
hanginą about. Thatąs what it was always about to me, anyway.˛
Here's the SPACEHOG tour update. Please notice some changes re: dates and
locations.

C NOTES
Well, i must say i like Spacehog. I saw them a few weeks ago, here in
California, and snagged one of the four drumsticks flung at the audience.
(such a dangerous tradition when you think about it). The club was packed
with people, and it was a very fine show. unfortunately, my right ear
rang for two days straight.
