Spoiler protection for those who like to go before they know....

Carly Simon, Hall and Oates, Jones Beach Theater, Wantagh NY, 29 July 1995.

An unusual setup. Hall and Oates were the opening act, but it was almost
a joint appearance. They shared the same band, there was no intermission
between acts, and H & O kept popping up later. I think the idea was to
paper over Carly's inability to do a long show (whether for nerves or lack
of stage work).

"ST" is Sally Taylor, Carly and James Taylor's daughter. [I know references
say her name is Sarah, but Carly said "Sally" onstage. Family name?] She
sang along.

The high point was easily Coming Around Again / Spider, which was very
powerful (complete with children's chorus). Next best was No Secrets.
Carly was very smooth on stage, with long introductions before songs that
were sort of a mix of Streisand's and JT's stage patter styles. No sign of
her famous stage fright, except maybe a little unease towards the end, and
no sign of a teleprompter either (the favorite singer's crutch of the 90s).
She was in excellent voice. I thought the song selections a little
questionable -- e.g., Nobody Does It Better is real fluff that could have
been dropped for something more meaningful.

Several times the audience called out "where's JT?". Darryl Hall said he
was filling in for him tonight; Carly said "what, you think I keep him
on a leash?" A woman behind us claimed that she could see JT lurking
backstage as the show was ending; I don't know if there's any truth to
that or not. The arrangement on Let the River Run was sort of a poor
man's "That Lonesome Road", with a fourth backup singer involved. The
band had real violin and cello players (sisters in fact) which was nice.
Everytime You Go Away was done unplugged style, and didn't quite capture
what Paul Young brought to it. In general Hall and Oates had a clear
sound and were very polished (I'm not much of a fan, but...).

All in all, a good show.

Not quite! It's the last part of the song "Terra Nova", co-written by James
Taylor and Carly, this part sung by Carly, and it's on the _JT_ album, as I
discovered while casually listening to it tonight.

It was done in near-total stage darkness, very effective.

This is the last line of the song but not the title, since I scanned the
album's song titles in a record store. Anyone know what it is?

Yes. You were close. In fact, it’s the last line
of "He Was Too Good To Me" - a Rodger/Hart song
on Carly’s 1990 album "My Romance". This album is
similar to "Torch" in that it is a collection of
her favourite standards, with (I think) one
original song.

I think it's a great album - but then I would!
Worth a listen you might like it too.
