While reading the credits to Pink Floyd's movie "The Wall,"
I was somewhat surprised to see Toni Tennille credited as a background
vocalist. I'm sure you remember Tennille as the vocal half of the
mid 70's to early 80's sap pop duo Captain and Tennille. Despite the music
they performed, it is clear that Toni Tennille is quite a vocalist with
a surprising vocal range and control. But that leaves the question as to
her contribution to The Wall. Anybody have a clue??

I don't think Toni Tennille's contribution to The Wall is anything more than
what is stated on the album sleeve - that of background vocalist. Do you see
her name listed on any other credits in the same album?

Singing background vocals is very much a specialists field in itself. Many
singers get their start that way, and it's a great start, with lots of
practice!

When you have the time, look through your other albums for background vocals
credits - you'll probably be surprised who you find listed.

She is most definitely one of the voices on THE WALL, in particular
the sound of the lascivious bimbo just before "One Of My Turns"
(remember "Wanna take a bath?!").

I suspect your certainty. Did you learn of this through a reliable source?

This was discussed on the PF mailing list a long while ago, but I've always
had problems with this answer. Besides never having any documents to verify
it, it doesn't seem to me that 1) it's her voice, 2) that one appearance
counts as *backing vocals*, and 3) she'd do that. But I could be wrong.

Still, in pursuit of truth, I feel that Toni is probably singing on the
track "Comfortably Numb." When Dave's line "When I was a child ..." comes
up, each time, you hear an accompanying higher voice. Someone speculated it
was Rick Wright in falsetto, but I'm skeptical. It sounds definitely female
to me, and I know (or think I know, if I'm wrong) Rick's voice. As further
evidence that it was a female, I offer the fact that Rachel Fury sang that
duet with Dave in their last tour (can't say I saw the Wall tour), and Rick,
who was present, did not. Still, he may have not wanted to. Take any of
this as much as you like. I prefer what I feel is the most likely reality.

Perhaps there are those of us who deny that she is present in either song.
Okay, where could she be? There are lots of songs that have female vocalists
in them, but only "Comfortably Numb" highlights one of them (if I'm right).
The rest of the songs involve choral back ups, and she may definitely be
involved there, but for Toni to only perform in this capacity seems unlikely.
But, if it is as prevelant for lead singers to do practically anonymous
backing vocals as someone suggested, again, I could be wrong here. Something
about this case just doesn't sit right with me. At least appearing on
"Comfortably Numb" seems to be a more likely reason she got involved, to me.

Consider the question, as yet, unanswered. I just don't buy that she was the
prostitute. One thing we know ... she's not the telephone operator.

She may have - but it was Doris Troy ("Just One Look") who did a good
deal of singing on DARK SIDE - including the "moaning" vocal at
the end of side 1.

If you are referring to "The Great Gig in the Sky", it was Claire Torry
who sang that song. Anyone know what became of her after she did the work
with Alan Parsons?

I think she sang with Shriekback in "Nemesis" and later rejoined Roger
Waters for the _Radio KAOS_ album and tour.

Yeah, I think I was referring to that..I was going to include a qualifying
statement of some kind saying that I wasn't completely sure that was Doris
Troy singing there, but she is credited on the album..soo, she being one of
my favorite singers, it was an easy assumption for me to make nicht wahr?

I might add that Toni Tennille is singing jazz these days. She's got
a good voice for it.

I know she was on Roger Water's _Radio K.A.O.S._ album (during two songs,
"Home" and "Four Minutes"). She was also involved in Roger's work previous
to that one, side two of the _When The Wind Blows_ soundtrack.

Doris Troy IS on "Great Gig In The Sky" I'm very familiar
with her voice. Claire Torry does the main vocal, but Doris
Troy's voice weaves in and out here and there... I think it's
a pity that Claire gets all the attention because I view that segment
more as a duet (imagine Claire's voice as lead guitar and Doris
voice as second guitar providing support for the lead).

Doris Troy is the prominent voice hanging around the back of
"Eclipse" at the end of the album (and I'm willing to bet that
many people give Torry credit for singing that as well :-( )

IMHO, Doris Troy had (hopefully still has) one of the most
incredible voices I have EVER heard. She has worked with
George Harrison, Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, The Rolling
Stones, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Paul & Linda McCartney,
Stephen Stills, Alan Parsons, and Peter Frampton (in addition to her work
with Pink Floyd). Sadly, her own music on the Atlantic label
is next to impossible to find... In addition, there was a succesful
musical written about her life (MAMA I WANT TO SING).
Doris was actually in the musical and played the part of her mother.

I STRONGLY recommend that you pick up anything with Doris
Troy's name on it!!!!

You weren't wrong - just half right :-)

I have an album from around 1975 with a red cover...

Other than her playing her mother in MAMA I WANT TO SING
(she had gained a lot of weight by then, this was around 84),
I don't know what happened to her...

The only references I have to her are vocals on Tangerine Dream's _Le Parc_
and on David Palmer's controversial _Objects of Fantasy_, the orchestral
Pink Floyd stuff.

She sings backup on Shriekback Oil and Gold. Also, on Sisters of
Mercy "Floodland" I hear her singing backup. She is not direcly
credited, but the first name listed under the "thank you" section
is "Claire" (no last name printed). It's gotta be her.
