Recent and Upcoming Album Releases: 94-37
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings and Salutations Everyone!

** New Notes: **
You will find new expanded Country Music Listings this Issue, and for all to
come.. also, look for new things in the future (possibly expanded jazz and
classical listings.. this is not to say we don't have these things, it's just
that we're now, or will be, getting more information on them.)
Once again, we are begging for some kind person to donate some form of fax
machine and/or a phone pickup/recording device.. Would anybody out there
have a GVP Phonepak or you want to get rid of? 8) And, we're also looking for
other weird things, you're probably wondering why.. If you're a smoker of the
following cigarettes, in the U.S., or possibly Canada, please email me..
Merit, Parliament, Marlboro, Camel, Winston, Winston Select, Raleigh,
or Bel-Air.

Oh, and sorry it was late this week.. I went back home for four days..

The New Releases official mailing list is currently in stasis, due to
load problems. So, for the time being, please refrain from sending
requests to be added to the mailing list. In an effort to clean
up the old mailing list, current subscribers may potentially be
required to re-subscribe. Additional info on the mailing list will
be forthcoming in later revisions of the list.

Did this come out? If so, how is it?

How's this? I thought their last album SUCKED after a string of excellent
material (well, except for _A Dead Horse_).

> 3 Oct The Carpenters (UK) Interpretations [RKL]

Thus begins the inevitable onslaught of Carpenters reissues,
in the wake of the _If I Were A Carpenter_ "tribute" album. This one compiles
mostly previously-released covers of other people's material. Snore.
Well, Richard Carpenter has final say on all Carpenters reissue
product, so you can't just blame A&M.

> 4 Oct Simple Minds Good News From The Next World [RN]

"...our career didn't take a dump in the latter '80's there! Love,
SM."

> 4 Oct Joe Jackson Night Music

Yet another offbeat Jackson project, not destined to bring him back
to the commercial forefront.

> 4 Oct Tom Jones The Lead And How To Swing It

That's "lead", as in the metal. And Jones, who has joined the "live
long enough and the unhip get their day" club, is getting pretty
good reviews for this one.

> 4 Oct Michael Nyman Live

Will his success with the soundtrack for "The Piano" translate into
anything more sustained?

> 4 Oct r Smashing Pumpkins Gish [PC2]

Wow...Good to see this one back in print. How long has it been deleted?
20 minutes?

> 4 Oct r Animotion Animotion

There are two albums with that title from Animotion. I assume this
is the first one with the hit "Obsession." That one would only be
silly to reissue, whereas a reissue of the second one (by essentially
a different band, and without any hits) would be screamingly ridiculous.

> 4 Oct R Elvis Costello & The AttractionsThe Very Best of 1977-1986

A pedestrian single disc best-of from Ryko to replace the pedestrian
single-disc best-of from Columbia.

> 4 Oct R Bon Jovi Crossroad [PC]

A best-of which admits Bon Jovi's career has been in decline for a
few albums now...

>11 Oct R Tuck & Patti The Best Of (Windham Hill)

Which goes to remind one that Windham Hill has now been around for over
a decade and a half. And New Age almost seems like a quaint memory now...

>18 Oct Victoria Williams Loose

Her first two albums were commercial failures. Will the momentum
provided by last year's tribute album translate into respectable
sales for this one?

>18 Oct The Spanic Family Spanic Family

Wow...Now the boys have recuited the whole family. Wonder if they'll
be doing "I'll Be There", "One Bad Apple", and
"The Rain, The Park, and Other Things"?

>18 Oct r Mystic Moods More Than Music

As always, the Mystic Moods were "not music, but an incredible simulation..."

>18 Oct *r Jimmy Webb Angel Heart

Oh Gawd! A reissue of Webb's worst album BY FAR. Where are the reissues
of the infinitely superior Reprise, Asylum, and Atlantic albums?
(Germany's Repetoire label has issued a compilation of his Reprise
years...anyone know a track listing? And when when Reprise US get
on the stick?)

>18 Oct R The Everly Brothers Heartaches and Harmonies

A boxed set from Rhino that covers their whole career: Cadence, Warner
Brothers, RCA, Passport, Polygram. Those was once a nice single
disc compilation that included tracks from their Cadence, Warner Brothers
and RCA years. But Arista deleted that one several years ago.

>18 Oct R <various> Just Can't Get Enough New Wave Hits

The Rhino series continues. We're moving into the mid '80's now, which
means things could be getting a bit more dicey...

>18 Oct *R The Go-Go's Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's

2 CDs, tons of unreleased and obscure stuff. Fans who bought the best-of
a few years ago to get that collection's single then-unique track (a
tepid remake of "Cool Jerk"--not the one on _Vacation_ but another
one just as lousy) will now be drawn back to the well one more
time.

>18 Oct *R Emerson, Lake & Palmer Best Of

Supposedly on A&M. Which is interesting, since the other ELP remastered
stuff was on Victory. Polygram, parent to both A&M and Victory, recently
underwent an extensive reorginization. Perhaps Victory was dissolved
in the process?

Somehow ELP on A&M doesn't seem to fit. But then, neither A(lpert) nor
M(oss) is at the label any longer. In fact, they just announced the formation
of a new label, "Almo" (after the music publishing company they've
owned for years).

>25 Oct Madonna Bedtime Stories [JB]

With signs that Madonna's empire may be showing cracks around the
foundation, you can be sure that there are more than a few Warner
execs losing a bit of sleep over this one right now...

>25 Oct Etta James Hard To Handle:Live From San Francisc

Before you consider this one, make sure you have the excellent
2CD best-of compilation on Chess/MCA.

>25 Oct *r Atomic Rooster Made In England
>25 Oct *r Atomic Rooster Nice 'N' Greasy
>25 Oct *r Colosseum II Strange New Flesh

More entries in the "is someone _really_ going to risk their money
reissuing THAT in the US?!" sweepstakes.

>25 Oct *R The Damned Damned But Not Forgotten

Perhaps this is a single disc compilation to stand alongside the
"Light at the End of the Tunnel" 2CD set on MCA?

>25 Oct *R Harry Nilsson Personal Best:The Anthology

For no apparent reason, long-delayed.

> Oct *r The Moody Blues On The Threshold Of A Dream
> Oct *r Jean-Michel Jarre Oxygene
> Oct *r Rush Signals
> Oct *r Creedence Clearwater Revival Willy And The Poor Boys
> Oct *r Heart Dreamboat Annie

These all smell like "gold disc" reissues, your chance to pay the
labels inflated bucks to do the mastering job they should have performed
in the first place.

> Oct *R Elton John Greatest Hits

A compilation of the material now controlled by Polygram, I assume.
Hopefully it'll be a bit more generous than the old EJ's Greatest Hits,
Vol. I on MCA.

> 8 Nov * Jimmy Page/Robert Plant No Quarter (Unledded) [TI]

The only question is whether it'll be THE hit of the holiday season.

>15 Nov *R <various> Best Of The Colpix-Dimension Story
>15 Nov *R Shelley Fabares Best Of

Rhino has now introduced a new pattern: First issue certain sets by mail-order
only, then subsequently issue them through normal channels.
Both the above releases and the doo wop boxed set followed this pattern.
Those looking for the best price are probably best advised to wait until
they come to a discount store near you.

>15 Nov *R Lulu From Crayons To Perfume: The Best Of

Hmmm...Will this span her career, which in the US includes releases
on Columbia, Atlantic, Chelsea, Alfa, EMI, and others?
That would be long overdue.

>22 Nov Van Halen Balance

The perfect near-Xmas release date for the perfect *product*.

>22 Nov *r Joe Walsh The Smoker You Drink
>22 Nov *r Joe Walsh The Player You Get

Interesting. Looks like MCA has broken the album into two parts, the
conceptually self-contained "side one" and "side two". :-)

>22 Nov *R Jimmy Buffett Songs You Know By Heart:Greatest Hits

What? A gold disc of this chintzy (and long-available) collection?

> Nov * <various> <tribute:Cream> Cream of the Crop
> Nov * <various> <tribute:Deep Purple> Smoke on the Water

File Under: Don't waste my time.

> Nov *r The Turtles It Ain't Me Babe
> Nov *r The Turtles You Baby
> Nov *r The Turtles Happy Together
> Nov *r The Turtles Battle Of The Bands

Available through a sub-licensing deal from Rhino (who reissued
all the Turtles material on vinyl in the '80's, but who is apparently
now too big to waste time on low-selling reissues like these).
Will these be straight reissues? Or will they include bonus tracks?

> Nov *R <various> The Complete Stax/Volt Singles Vol. 3

Fantasy completes the promised trilogy.
Vol. 1 covered the Atlantic/Stax gravy years. Vol. 2 covered the mixed-but-
still-worthy post-Atlantic through early '70's material. But things
definitely got worse later on, as Stax eventually became (after
Fantasy's purchase in the mid '70's) a dumping ground for some sad
R&B. Will we be seeing tracks like "From the Gut to the Butt"?

Your sniffer is working just fine, David, 'cuz that is exactly what these
are. Saw an ad for 'em in Car&Driver. (The only real MFSL CD worth spending
the money on, IMHO, is their version of the Alan Parsons Project's TALES
OF MYSTERY & IMAGINATION; no Orson Wells, no "updated" synths, no
additional guitar solos). But, I'll still probably buy the Rush & JMJ CD's.

Oct *R Elton John Greatest Hits

PolyGram released "Greatest Hits" in 1992 with one additional song:
"Candle In The Wind." This release is on the DCC (gold disc) label
which means, I assume that once again, as Dave describes it, we'll
get to pay the record company extra money for the mastering quality
they should have done before.

Oh, BTW: It's been pused back to November 1 release.

If I may treat this way too seriously for a minute... ;-)

I doubt it. It won't debut at #1 if _Hell Freezes Over_ is actually
released on the 8th (assuming that either cracks whatever's at the top
then...most likely Madonna). Nor will it creep to #1, given the pre-Xmas
release schedule. And, of course, if Pearl Jam gets their act together
it'll _never_ hit #1. But strong sales from this and the tribute album
could be enough to let the forthcoming album of new material hit #1 (or at
least debut there). This will likely hang in the top 15 for a few months
and then sink slowly. Platinum by Xmas, but no more than 2 million by next
Xmas...unless I misjudge completely.

Don't get me wrong--I'm buying 2 or 3 copies. ;-)

BTW, the Unledded special was MTV's highest-rated Unplugged ever, including
Clapton. Should make Atlantic happy, at least. Album will be released
Nov. 7th on Phonogram outside the US/Canada, and the video is due Nov. 15th.
Different tracks on both than on the broadcast version, of course.
