Part of an ongoing saga ...

In my search for alternative sources of import & promo CDs I have
received a handful of requests for my sources. I was originally
hoping to hear from some netters overseas. No luck yet. Here is a
brief synopsis of the mail-order joints I commonly use:
*****
Simmons Corporation
P.O.Box 22021
Milwaukie, Oregon 97222
(503) 652-1286 They offer a decent selection of Japanese, UK, and German
CDs at fair prices. Their order turnaround time isn't the best
though, but luck with most importers depends on their overseas
sources, I suppose. (I recently had an order returned as OOS (out
of stock) for the 3rd time in 9 months [ (8-o oh nooo!], thus
prompting my inquiry for alternative sources from the net.) Lately,
they've included a special "Hot n' Heavy" section for heavy metal
collectables. {I'm still hunting for those last few Def Leppard
promo CDs!}
*****
Overseas Shopper, Inc.
P.O.Box 22354
Portland, Oregon 97222
(503) 654-4920 I suspect this is a sister company of Simmons; same looking
catalog, and the same phone answering/ordering service (diiferent
numb.) They offer about the same selection, prices, but we've had
better success and order turnaround time from Overseas than
Simmons. Often we'll pass on ordering from the latter and wait for
it to appear in the former's catalog.

Goldmine {not a supplier, but a publication of dealers & goods}
700 E. State Street
Iola, WI 54990
(715) 445-2214(715) 445-4087 [FAX]
This is a tabloid about the size of Rolling Stone, all
newsprint, usually a featured artist on the cover. It runs
bi-weekly with subscriptions costing $35 for 1 year. (other rates
avl.) A friend of mine at work subscribes to it and I usually flip
through his a day later (oh yeah, 1st class sub rates can be had,
if you really want to beat out everyone else on ordering the
hard-to-find goodies.) The tabloid features a few articles on
featured artists, their collectible items, etc. But the majority is
devoted to dealer advertisements, listings of their wares, auctions
of collections, classified ads ... Sometimes it has evrything you
want at once, sometimes zip. But it great reading for the more
serious collector.

International CD
216 S. York Road
Hatboro, PA 19040
(215) 233-0638(215) 233-0421 [FAX]
A good supplier (where I found my copy of Yes "Tormato").
You can find better prices if you look. They usually have the
hard-to-find items though.
*****
New England CD
105 Charles Street, #359
Boston, MA 02114
(617) 776-2514 [FAX]
A good source for promos / singles. Good prices, large
supplies (they have always had in stock what I've wanted, no Out-
Of-Stock BS).

The best thing to do is to order from one of the "big three" shops
in London-
Tower, 1 Piccadilly Circus, London W1
HMV, 150 Oxford Street, London W1
Virgin, Oxford Street at Tottenham Court Road, London W1
They've got amazing selections, and take credit cards. You can
write, or run up a mighty phone bill calling them! I also know some
places in Germany, but you need to speak/write German.

A good place for non-USA CDs is Canada (in fact, a lot of
Cohen's stuff is available on Canadian domestic or on European
labels; he's from Montreal). A lot of stuff is imported internally
by companies for sale at domestic prices; unlike supporters of the
parallel imports law in the US blocking commercial imports, the
Canadians figure that if there is a buck to be made then they'll
make it themselves and keep the listeners happy.
My preferred and suggested route is to write up a shopping
list if you or a friend/colleague are travelling up north (esp. to
Toronto and to Montreal) and buying it in a shop. Otherwise, two
mail order places have been suggested by net.readers.

For a place that will order CD's for you. Call directory assistance
at
1-416-555-1212 and ask for a place "The CD Bar" on "Queen St
W.". They can get almost anything, it can be a bit pricy at times,
but they are good at getting anything.

I've tried sending an address to order Max CDs to several people
but some have bounced. Here is the info:

I've gotten quite a few requests for this, so to avoid a mess of
e-mail:
Spindle Records
"Canadian, European and Japanese CDs by Mail"
P.O. Box 22354
Portland, OR 97222
(503) 652-7572 (orders and info)
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with these guys; in fact, I've
never shopped there myself since my brother can pick up stuff for
me back home in Winnipeg. However, a couple of people I've
referred to them have given me favourable feedback.

Well, since I see you have a quote from Rush I am assuming you
might be interested in a place with which I have been happy. It is
called Progressive Records and is located here in the S.F. Bay
Area. As the name suggests they deal with "progressive" type music
with some jazz and other stuff thrown in. They get the stuff from
all over, imports and domestic. I don't have their current address
as they moved recently and I haven't yet called to get it, but
their phone number is
+1 415 487 7888. If you have any questions
about the place just ask and I'll try to answer them. Oh, yes,
they have a catalogue. Hope you find it usefull. Take it easy.
