I know some didn't like Rock Island. It took me awhile to get in to
it. Now I think it's a good group songs. It took time for me to get
in to Passion Play, A, and Under Wraps, but I think they're all great.
I hope this time they spend what ever time they need to express what
ever art they want to get across. I love listening and learning all
the Tull material. If you think they're not getting it right, then
let us see you do it right.

Nobody's late. If you read 'A New Day' (the Tull newsletter) you would
know that, yes some of the material is done, but not all. Ian has said
that the group plans to finish the album this Fall and a plan release
this coming Spring.

Well your Philadelphia area record selling friend must know a
different Ian Anderson. Most likely from Kennett Square Pa. (Mushroom
Capital). The Jethro Tull Ian Anderson is the largest producer of
Northern Scotland salmon. His fisheries are in the southern end of the
Isle of Skye. His wife runs a cereal farm just outside of London in
the Home Counties. Yes he does not need Rock and Roll to supply his
income, but time and time agian in his interviews and on film he has
said he enjoys going in to his home studio. He has been at the top
of his salmon farming for about 8 years, but yet has tour for the
last 4 years. Recorded 'Crest of Knave', 'Rock Island', parts of
'20 Years of Jethro Tull' and now the new album. The man has
Rock and Roll in this blood to do this if money is not reason. Now
anything could happen, maybe Martin quiting but I don't think so. I
think will hear new Anderson tunes for next ten years. As many as 5 or
6 more albums. Prehaps another solo album.

I guest working with this dictator is not so bad.

Dave Pegg 11 years

Martin Alcock 2 years

Whoa...I haven't looked at rec.music.misc for a year or so...is this the
general opinion of the group? I personally felt that Rock Island was
one of the best Tull albums in recent years. It had a consistant
'urban plight' theme, great bass lines, etc. Am I the only one?

Nope.I thought Rock Island was pretty damn good , but some of the
songs are a bit dull for Tull , notably HEAVY WATER and UNDRESSED
TO KILL.The rest is pretty damn good !

It's certainly a better album that Crest of a Knave and UNDER WRAPS, which
on the CD version is TO much !

I have to agree that the Rock Island CD was another good effort from Tull.
I didn't think it had quite as much energy as Crest of a Knave did however.
Granted, the number of weaker songs was greater of Crest of a Knave, but at
the same time, Rock Island didn't quite have anything of the caliber of
"Farm on the Freeway" or "Budapest". The current direction of Tull is
in general much better than the A through Under Wraps period.

As an interesting piece of Tull trivia, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden is wearing
a Crest of a Knave tour shirt in the sleeve from the Seventh Son of a Seventh
Son album. I have heard that Tull was one of Iron Maiden's big influences.
I tend to believe this since I have also heard a Maiden cover of "Cross
Eyed Mary" that is pretty sympathetic to the original.

Does anyone know which album/single/whatever this cover is on? I'm
trying to get copies of all Tull covers but I don't know where this
one or the one W.A.S.P. did is.

thanks,

The version I have is on a Japanese 12" of Aces High.
It is available on something else(maybe the uk/us 7" version??)

The "Cross Eyed Mary" single is on the B side of the Trooper single.
If I remember correctly it was a 12"

I forget exactly which one but I believe it's from the "Piece Of Mind"
era. Possibly the b-side of "The Trooper".

Iron Maiden's cover of Jethro Tull's "Cross-Eyed Mary" was released on
the special picture disc (yes, back in the vinyl LP days ;) ) version of
Piece Of Mind. I don't have catalog numbers or anything else, since I
don't carry my LPs to work. Come to think of it, I don't remember what
pictures were on the disk. I think the album shot where IM is sitting at
the banquet table while a large brain on a dish is just uncovered is there,
as well as some permutation of Eddie Maiden on the flip side. Maybe I
should check out my LP collection from time to time ;) .

I can get ID numbers if anybody needs them. Does anyone know if this
song has been released on CD?

I am 99.9% sure it also appears on one of the EPs as well. Only I don't know
which one.
