I thought that Jesse and Jellybean Johnson were actually 2 separate people.
I'll check my old Time records when I get home (if I remember).

I checked - Jellybean Johnson is the drummer for the Time although he
does play guitar as well. Jesse Johnson is the guitarist for the Time
(and a solo artist and producer). Both play guitar on Black Cat along
with two other guitarists. It sounds to me like there are 2 different
guitar solo's on the song - the tone changes half way through. The
second one sounds to me like Jesse but the first one I'm not so sure
about (it probably is but I don't know the other two gutarists at all)
- I will have to listen to my Jesse Johnson solo albums again (which
are great albums! - I really like his guitar playing and he writes
really funky grooves and I like his production as well!)

The original question, by hoo...@ucscb.ucsc.edu (Jeffori Arnold), was:
>I was flipping around the radio and I hear a pretty decent solo and finally
>the DJ said it was 'black cat' (janet jackson I believe) - who .was. the guitar-
>ist on that song? I just have to know..

her...@tegra.COM (Valentino Herrera) answered:
>My understanding is that it's Nuno Bettencourt of the band "Extreme".

pri...@pawl.rpi.edu (Ron Buckmire) replied:
>Is that a joke?

>I'm pretty sure that it's Jesse (Jellybean) Johnson of The Time. He also
>co-produces the song. Janet wrote it by herself.

her...@tegra.COM (Valentino Herrera) again relpies:

A.) No, it was not a joke.
B.) As for the validity of my statement, an article in the Boston
Herald, dated August 3rd 1990, reads as follows:

"Bettencourt was then tapped to play guitar on Janet
Jackson's remixed single, "Black Cat."

"Mike Wagner was asked by Janet Jackson's people to mix
a video for her and Nuno was exactly the type of player
that was needed to help Janet cross over to more of a
rock direction", said [drummer Paul] Geary.

Bettencourt also produced Dweezil Zappa's new album and
played a guest spot with Ratt's Warren DiMartini on Ozzy
Osbourne's new record."

Ron, if you have contrary information, please post the information and
source. Thanks.

Coming from St. Paul, and being a DJ here in the Twin Cities, I think I am
qualified to answer the question posed....

On Black Cat, Jesse Johnson is the guitarist on the album cut. No Jesse and
Jellybean are NOT the same person. Jesse plays the guitar and Jellybean plays
the drums.

The rest of THE TIME line-up is as follows:

Morris Day -Vocals
Jimmy Jam Harris -Keyboards
Terry Lewis -Bass
Monte Moire -Keyboards
Jesse Johnson -Guitars
Jellybean Johnson (not related) -Drums
also some guitar playing
Jerome Benson -Call/response & backup vocals
Personal valet

Prince -Co-collaborator/producer/founding father... AKA Jamie Starr

According to the 12" CD and MTV, Vernon Reid of LIVING COLOUR is the
guitarist in Janet Jackson's BLACK CAT, not Jesse Johnson.

The 12" (exteneded/dance) versions are different from the album/cd version.

You are correct, vernon ried is the axe player for the re-mixes.
