Does anyone the song that the Damned did that had a guitar intro with
a kind of a Mexican flavor to it? It kept on recurring throughout the
song. I believe it was their version, so it wasn't their original.
If you know the song please e-mail me the title, lyrics, and the
album it is on. Any additional info on the group will also be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks;
Al

The song you are talking about sound a lot like the song "Alone Again Or"
which is on the album "Everything." The original version of the song was
written/performed by the group Love some time in the late 60s. I wish
that I had the lyrics also--I'm trying to figure out the song on the guitar
BTW, anyone out there have the tab for it?

The Damned have been around since 1976 (or 77?) and were one of the first
"punk" groups, predating even the Sex Pistols. Membership in the group
has been more or less a revolving door with old members leaving and coming
back later. The only constant member has been singer Dave Vanian, with
drummer Rat Scabies hanging around the longest also, even though he was
replaced for a European tour by Jon Moss who later joined Culture Club(!)

The Damned are still around too. Technically, their last studio album was
Everything, but they have a greatest hits album called something like
"The Light At The End Of The Tunnel" and several live shows available as
an import.

I saw The Damned here at the Hollywood Palladium last August, with the
"original" line-up... Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Bryan James, and Rat
Scabies. GREAT SHOW! The set list stuck to more of their earlier punk
stuff, so even though it was only an 80 minute show, I was completely
drained afterward.

I'm sure there are bound to be corrections to this, but off the top of my
head, a rough Damned discography goes something like...

1. Damned Damned Damned!
2. Music For Pleasure
3. Machine Gun Ettiquite
4. The Black Album
5. Strawberries
6. Phantasmagoria
7. Anything

I just realized, the album I was referring to is called "Anything" not
Everything (and no, I wasn't thinking of the Bangles either)

Some trivia: Pink Floyd drummer produced Music For Pleasure.

BTW, Phantasmagoria is one of my most favorite albums of all time. Entirely
unlike the eary punk stuff, and filled with keyboards, but a great album
regardless. Especially to listen to in the car.

Hope this all helps!

It was a cover of "Alone Again or.." by Love. The original is on
"Forever Changes", regarded by some as a classic LP

The Damned's version is on "Anything" (I think)

THey released the first Punk album

I don't think so. I'm sure this tour was just a one off to lay the band to
rest. Dave has a new band & the good captain still does solo stuff.

Another album is Damned but not forgotten + there was an album called The Best
of the Damned before Light came out + several live albums.

Steve.

The video for "Alone Again Or" used to get played a lot on MTV's
"120 Minutes."

On the subject of the Damned, has anyone listened to the
Captain Sensible solo album Revolution Now?
It's got some great pop songs and an incredibly strange assortment
of samples from tv & radio footage and other sources.
Very good album..

- which reminds me: The other night I fell asleep with the radio on. I
woke up at 3.30 (am!) to Barry Ryan's "Eloise", a minor hit of the
more theatrical kind from 1968 or so. Didn't The Damned once record a
cover of this song?

Come to think of it, I think The Damned have/had a thing about lush,
sentimental-ish 60s pop - on "Anything" you'll find a cover of "Alone
Again Or" (originally done by Love.)

Yes they did. I'm not even certain of where it was released but,
I think it was only a 12". (But a great song!) It can also be found
on (again if I'm not mistaken) the "Light at the end of the Tunnel"
compilation.
