Finding the "Australian equivalent of PF" may be a bit difficult, but
there is one band which I recommend highly.
For the closest thing to a Floyd-feel, I'd suggest anything from the
band "Not Drowning, Waving". Their most recent release, "Claim" is
available on CD (dunno about anything earlier). When "Claim" came out,
it grabbed the attention of Peter Gabriel and his then-flame, Rosanna
Arquette. The lead singer spent some time with Gabriel at his
home/studio. Dunno if anything came of it, though.
Their music combines a lot of styles: world music, aboriginal,
samples, etc. Has a bit of a New Age feel, but much more percussive.
They definately don't sit there in the background.
Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I agree. I have all of NDW's work on CD and have not been disappointed.
For info, the latest CD is called 'Tabaran'. At the time this was
released, all of NDW's work was re-released on CD. Apparently it had
not been available on CD before.
Titles available are : (In order of appearance, I think)
'Another Pond'
'The Little Desert'
'The Cold and the Crackle'
'Claim'
'Tabaran'
Claim is my favourite.
