The three partners in IUMA are Rob Lord, Jeff Patterson (both UC
Santa Cruz CIS seniors) and Jon Luini (me). In addition to the three of us,
we have an awesome crew of about 7 volunteers who work daily to keep IUMA
running. As the first people doing a full hi-quality free music archive on
the internet, IUMA has been going strong since November of '93. We
currently have music online from over 220 indie/unsigned bands as well as
label presences for 10 labels ranging from unknowns ones liked Quagmire
to "large" indies such as Teenbeat to major ones like Warner Bros. Records.
After upgrading to a new SGI server in our cramped santa cruz office, we
are serving about 25,000 WWW accesses a day, though it grows so quickly that
that is probably out of date by the time you read this :}
We also have mirror sites... one in Europe (London) and one at
the University of North Carolina (which is where we started out).
you can connect to us in the following ways:
WEB: http://www.iuma.com/IUMA/
FTP: ftp.iuma.com
Gopher: gopher.iuma.com
via the web you can jump to our mirror sites to go to one which is quickest
for you. if you wish to ftp/gopher to one of the other ones directly,
their addresses are:
North Carolina: WEB: http://sunsite.unc.edu/ianc/
FTP: sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/electronic-publications/IUMA
Gopher: sunsite.unc.edu, worlds of sunsite/IUMA
London: WEB: http://www.southern.com/IUMA
FTP: www.southern.com:/IUMA
Gopher: not available yet
We are continuing to develop innovative ways to get better distribution
for indie/unsigned musicians as well as close the gap between artists
and their listeners. To give you a quick example of those, yesterday
wen did the following:
1. Plugged IUMA into the console of KSCU, a college radio
station in Santa Clara, CA. and did an entire 3 hour show
played directly from the computer. This is only the first step
in this project and we played 28 different songs from unsigned and
indie bands.
2. We uploaded the 30second pre-release excerpt of Madonna's new
song "Secret" from her upcoming album (release in about a month).
Along with it is a special audio message to the computer listeners
out there.
Keep an eye out for more info as we try and find the time to let people
know what we're doing in addition to just spending all our time doing it :}
If you have any questions or want to get your band online, etc, feel
free to contact us!

But if IUMA *had* everything on the net, then there would be no more validity
in the "U" in "IUMA."
Oh great. That's all the Internet needs is some kind of stereotyped racial

tuva raga disco asian throat singing.

Um, guys? Internet Underground Music *Archive*. They don't choose the
music people send them. They just archive it, for a minimal price.
Then you get to download it. It's not that they won't put hip-hop or
funk on IUMA, it's that *no one's sent any yet*. And I could let slip
something that would totally change your minds about this "bias", but
that hasn't been worked out yet....

C'mon. I think the point is that it would be nice if there was
something besides ``alternative''-college-lotsapoorlosers-mainstream
stuff on the server, not that there is some type of discrimination
going on. I guess we need more funky hip-hoppers in computer science.
Next week, someone from IUMA is coming to Berklee School of Music to
talk about the project to Music Production and Engineering majors.
I'll try to ask a question about funk and hip-hop, as well as other
types of music, and find out why they choose to put up what they do.
It just might be that they prefer that kind of music.

Why do you assume that the IUMA administrators' tastes enter into the
picture at all? As far as I know, they'll take all comers. The reason
you see a lot of college-style alternative music there is probably that
college students can get Internet access easily, and are thus more
likely to submit music to the archive than musicians who typically aren't
online.
I don't see any favoritism at work here. IUMA can't make music available
unless it's given to them!
-Steve
Whether or not the majority of bands on IUMA fall in a similar category,
no band has been denied their service for any reaon, *especially* in
regards to musical style. Their taste has no bearing on the selections.

Okay, I'll take your word for it. But what's with the [pretentious]
"U" in "IUMA"? "Underground." "Alternative." "Grunge." "Generation [e]X[crement] music."? That's how I interpret it.
If it were simply called the "Internet Music Archive" (IMA) or the
"Internet Online Music Archive" (IOMA)? Then fair enough, you could then
assume you'll get all kinds of music on it, and not simply "Underground"
as the "U" in "IUMA" suggests.
I have no problem with the service, and have tried it out myself, and
I do feel this is an important if not revolutionary service to the whole
Internet community...it's just the "U" that bothers me.

I didn't know that "Underground" had any particular connotation as to the
type of music, per se. Doesn't it just meanstuff that's not getting
published in ordinary channels?
Turns out that a whole lot of "Underground" music that gets out in the
less-than-ordinary channels is so-called "alternative" etc... because
that's probably the most popular form among college students and other
city-living slacker sorts that tend to form underground distribution
networks.
Now that the network is *the* network, it would seem that the call is out
for those who'd like to have their jazz/country/ethnic/classical/whatever
distributed in such a way. If you publish it, they will write.

I think it's unfortunate that we often allow ourselves to function as mere
reactionaries as the post above implies. In my lexicon, the word
*underground* has no relation to mass marketed media definitions , and on the
basis of historical definition, is rooted in the praxis of underepresented
and revolutionary change.
The way I look at it, we can *choose* to either flop
around in the pop culture baby pool that has traditionally been *ruled* by our
collective and stubborn adherence to a herd mind set fueled by fear and
factionalism and defined by some all too easily scapegoated "other", or we
can exercise our creative energies to try and improve things.
My personal dealings with the folks at IUMA have convinced me that they are
working very hard - often at great personal exspense - to help musicians of
every persuasion to reach a larger audience and we can all benefit from their
example.
Peace

The last statement has already been beaten to death. So why don't you two
(one or both) put up a hip-hop page? That's the beauty of the Web... You
don't need a big shindig to put up information. As long as you have
anonymous ftp available (and I know 'SC does... there not that much in
the Stone Age (disclaimer: Bruin alumni speaking...)) you can let everyone
in the world get to your information.
I've also assumed that you two have checked out the VIBE home page at
http://www.vibe.com/. It's not the same as the magazine, but it's something.
(Followups restricted to the music groups in the list. Any comments please

Well, they are discussing what to do about the name, now that
they are not as "underground" as when they started, but they
are still "underground" in that they handle unsigned bands,
do not charge the music listeners for the music, and really

I had a conversation a couple weeks ago with a "corporate giant" that
thought it was the most excting, important thing for a band to be on
IUMA. He mentioned 3-4 times over 20 minutes "Oh you gotta get onto IUMA
- that's the future... (etc.)" Said that the men behind the desks don't
understand it, and that's what intrigues them.

You are a truely wacky person.
We are not "discussing what to do about the name" because we're "not
as underground as [we] used to be" or for any other reason. Where did
did you hear that?
Secondly, you rumor-monger you, specifically which "Corporate Giants"
have "agreed" not to sign IUMA artists. In fact, just the opposite has
happened. At the College Music Journal (CMJ) Music Marathon in NYC, a
"college/alternative" A&R person at EMI mentioned that their internal
discussions include bands they'd discovered on IUMA. Furthermore, an A&R
rep. from Warner seems to be warming up to a particular Santa Cruz band.
You seem to suggest that a record label would not sign a band that has
independently made thousands of fans worldwide respond enthusiastically
to their demo song/ep. That's ludicrous!
