Hey, I'm having a *real* hard time finding a recording of
the song "Mr. Sandman" (you know, "Hey Mister Sandman, bring
me a dream/Make her the cutest, that I've ever seen..." or
however it goes). Can anyone out there tell me of any
versions by other artists? For that matter, have I got the
name of the original group right, it's Chordettes, right?

I'd really like to play this on my radio show on April 17th
as part of my "Music for Neil Gaiman Fans" theme, and this
cut is a pretty key thing to have.

(If you happen to be somewhere in the Stanford area: I'm on
Saturday nights from Midnight to 3AM, on KZSU at 90.1 FM).

I believe Emeylou (sp) Harris did a cover in the early 80's.

Thanks for all the helpful replies everyone... here's a
brief summary:

Yes, "Mr. Sandman" was recorded by the Chordettes in 1954,
and it's on the Best of the Chordettes CD re-released by
Rhino Records.

There's also a version by Emmylou Harris on her greatest
hits record "Profile II".

I've also heard an intriguing hint that there may be a male
vocal version on a movie soundtrack such as Gremlins. I
think this is interesting, because I would guess that this
song was originally intended for male vocal "Mr. Sandman,
bring me a dream/ Make her the cutest that I've ever seen"
somehow sounds a little more likely than "Mr. Sandman, bring
us a dream/Make him the cutest that we've ever seen", which
is what I think the Chordettes sing.

Anyway, thanks much everybody.

I'm still looking for versions of songs quoted in the comic
book the Sandman, because I'd really like to play this on my

radio show on April 17th as part of my "Music for Neil
Gaiman Fans" theme.

Here's a few that I find maddening: Who did that old hit
that goes "Dre...eee...eam/Dream Dream Dream/Dre...eee...eam/
Dream Dream Dream/Whenever I want you all I want to, all I
have to do, is/Dre Eee Eam..." Maybe Everly Brothers or
something, but I can't find it on any of their records I've
got access to.

Here's another, one from an old movie, maybe sung Debbie
Reynolds: "Asked to decribe/this whole beautiful thing/if I
were a bell I'd go ding dong ding dong ding dong ding." I
could've sworn it was from some movie like "The Unsinkable
Molly Brown", but I was looking at the soundtrack for that
one and I don't see it there.

The reason those last two bug me in particular is that the
comic book fanatics on rec.comics.misc didn't even recognize
them as quoted song lyrics, but I can actually hear them in
my head, I just can't place them.

If you've got some ideas, send them to me, I'll summarize
and post here.

Yep, this is "All I have to Do is Dream" by the Everly Brothers. It
should be on any of their greatest hits albums, since it was one of
their biggest. Oh, and by the way, "Dream Lover" is by Ricky Nelson,
right?

From "Guys and Dolls" (get the new recording for a really swell
version--the older version is weak in my opinion).

In addition, R.E.M. covers the song on the soundtrack to the 1987
rock/documentary "Athens GA Inside Out." Their version is performed live
and acoustic, and is sung in what I believe to be the same old church
where they played their very first show in 1980.

Don't forget the cover that was done on "Family Ties" in the mid-late 80's
by Jennifer's Keaton's singing group, as mangaged by Alex Keaton (michael j
