...........................................................................

The Top 50 has been put online at http://www.zip.com.au/~aa/auschart.html
and is complete with catalogue numbers and links to websites to most of the
artists in the Top 50. I've tried to emphasise Australian fansites. Check
it out if you're in need of some enlightenment. ;) It gets updated every
Saturday (well, most of the time anyway). :) Also, if you find an artist
website for an artist without a link or a website that is significantly
better than the site I've listed then *please* let me know. It'll be
greatly appreciated. Even if it's your own site - so long as it's good
I'll include a link to it. Please note that the link will only remain
listed as long as the artist is charting.

Chart commentary:

This week has been an interesting week for the Australian charts and the
local music scene...

I'll first start off with the unusually large discrepancies between the
AMR and ARIA chart. Below is this week's Top 10 AMR chart:
1. MY HEART WILL GO ON - Celine Dion
2. IT'S LIKE THAT - Run D.M.C. vs Jason Nevins
3. FROZEN - Madonna
4. TORN - Natalie Imbruglia
5. AS LONG AS YOU LOVE ME - Backstreet Boys
6. TOGETHER AGAIN - Janet
7. LOLLIPOP (CANDYMAN) - Aqua
8. ALL I HAVE TO GIVE - Backstreet Boys
9. NEVER EVER - All Saints
10. DOCTOR JONES - Aqua
The "big" discrepancies that I'm talking about is the high ranking of The
All Saint's and Aqua's new single compared to their rankings on this
week's ARIA chart. Judging from this week's AMR Victorian chart, ARIA's
under representation of Victorian sales are at work again. I know, I seem
to immediately support AMR. But only because they've been in the business
of compiling charts for almost 3 decades. ARIA have 20 years of experience
to catch up with. *groan*

An event that is getting lots of attention lately is Sydney's Gay &
Lesbian Mardi Gras, which is now Australia's largest festival parade. It
was Triple J FM's feature topic all week, and not surprisingly, had the
news media busy with all sorts of stories. What's this got to do with
music or the Australian charts, you're wondering? Well, apart from its
strong political statement of equality, what I find fascinating about this
event is how it seems to (temporarily) change the music scene in
Australia. No other event comes close. The mardi gras seems to bring out
the hidden dance music urges in some radio stations - most notably Triple
J. It's quite unusual hearing the national alternative music youth
broadcaster play a barrage of hard, punk, and grunge rock songs from the
likes of Grinspoon, Pearl Jam, Tool and so on, followed by "Finally" by CC
Peniston -- a song that is _never_ played by the J'ers and which is
usually a staple song of easy listening radio stations.
Of course there's a good reason why commercial disco and dance classics
have been played quite extensively by Triple J all week - their feature
album is a rather unique CD.... This year's mardi gras marks the 20th
anniversary of the event. To celebrate it a special commemorative 20th
anniversary CD has been released called "1998 Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras -
20 Explosive Years" (this week's "Feature album" on Triple J), featuring a
dance classic (or "anthem") from every year since 1978. Artists featured
on the CD are The Jacksons, Marlena Shaw, Blondie, Bohannon, Sylvester,
Class Action, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, Marrs, Will Drowning,
Yazz, Ruth Campbell, Deee-Lite, Ce Ce Peniston, Staxx, The Brand New
Heavies, Billy Ray Martin, Sarah Washington and Sandy B. Now what's this
got to do with the charts, you're probably wondering? :) Well, the mardi
gras series of CDs sells quite well in Australia. Last year's edition
managed to become a Top 10 selling album (AMR) as well as topping the New
South Wales' album chart (AMR).
Such is the prominence of this event that it now attracts famous
celebrities to these shores. Rumoured to be attending the celebrations are
Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Dannii. World famous acts attending the parade
(as spectators, of course!) :) include U2 and Elton John. Try to spot them
in the crowd. ;)
For those who are more interested in the music rather than the parade,
Rage will feature a mardi gras special on Saturday night (28th February)
from 11.15pm. Acts to feature include (taken from
http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/rage.htm) Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Jimmy
Somerville, The Village People, Ru Paul, Chaka Khan, Grace Jones, Yazz,
The Pet Shop Boys, Yello, Soft Cell, Janet Jackson, Boy George, and lots
more. Triple J FM will simulcast the broadcast, but I'm not sure from what
time. If you can't get access to Triple J or Rage, you can listen to it
via real audio on Triple J's net broadcast
(http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/triplej.htm).

Now to this week's chart:

1 ( 1) MY HEART WILL GO ON - Celine Dion (Sony) {p}

I've been asked a few times recently what's the difference between the
normal and VD version is. One of my subscribers (Stuart Fenech -
lfe...@bit.net.au) informs me that the difference is in the tracks that
are featured on CD single. The cover remains the same so it's difficult to
know which version you're buying. The original version includes previous
past hits from Celine. The VD version seems to have more B-side love
songs. The version I have includes the tracks "My Heart Will Go On",
"Because You Loved Me", "When I Fall In Love" and "Beauty & The Beast",
however, I'm not sure which version it is.

5 (NE) FROZEN - Madonna (Warner)

Madonna, the "Queen of Pop" and almost full time goddess, ;) makes a very
welcome and spectacular return to the chart this week. For a change,
I thought I'd get a very loyal Madonna fan (whose appreciation of her
is greater than mine!) ;) to write up the commentary for her new single.
Here is it, thanks to Scott Ham's much appreciated contribution:

Madonna bursts back into the Top 100 after an absence of almost a year
with "Frozen", the lead single from her new album, "Ray of Light". The #5
debut of the single marks the first time that Madonna has reached the Top
5 since April 1995, when "Bedtime Story" debuted in the same position.
For those interested in chart statistics, "Frozen" is Madonna's 46th
Australian chart hit, her 43rd to reach the Top 40, her 30th to reach the
Top 10, and her 20th to reach the Top 5. The song itself was written by
Madonna with her long-time collaborator Patrick Leonard, who co-wrote such
hits as "Live To Tell", "Like A Prayer", "Cherish" and more recently,
"I'll Remember". Well known UK dance producer, William Orbit, co-produced
the track with Madonna and Leonard, which explains the trance-like feel to
the song (a trademark of Orbit's production techniques). The song
remains, though, unmistakably Madonna.
- Scott Ham (ha...@worldlink.com.au).

22 (NE) ALL I HAVE TO GIVE - Backstreet Boys (Sony)

This is the Backstreet Boys' fifth Top 50 hit, as well as being their
highest entering single. Thing seems to be going quite well for these
guys. Radio has finally accepted them (their previous 3 singles are still
receiving heavy airplay), adults have started buying their album - all of
which has culminated into very healthy album sales. What more could they
ask for? :)

23 (NE) LOLLIPOP (CANDYMAN) - Aqua (UMA) {g}

Probably not as instantly attention grabbing as their previous charting
hits, Lollipop certainly is just as fun - this time featuring what seems
to sound like a disco inspired beat (err.. it's hard to explain, but it
reminds me of a "classic" disco song). The most interesting aspect of this
single's entry is its accreditation of a gold sales award at such a low
chart position. This has occurred due to retail music stores expecting
high sales of this single as history has shown (very obviously) that Aqua
are a very successful singles and album act in terms of sales. However,
despite this singles lower than expected debut, which was probably most
likely due to it being rush released and the fact that Dr Jones is still
available in sizeable quantities in stores, expect another Top 5 hit from
Aqua. :)

61 (61) WHAT I DON'T KNOW 'BOUT YOU - You Am I (BMG)+

I saw the video to this on Rage not long ago. Very amusing. It appears to
inspired by the 1976 classic, Australian comedy "Don's Party", starring
Australian TV legend Graham Kennedy. This music clip has guest appearances
from several very well known Australian TV and film stars. The one whose
name I *do* know ;) is Nadine Gardner (of Henderson's Kids / Raw FM). BTW,
this single was released in the UK this week. I'm hoping for at least a
Top 75 debut, unlike "Soldiers" which either missed the Top 200 or was
withdrawn from release.
Interestingly enough, a single from fellow Australian rock band "The
Regurgitator" was released in the UK this week as well. Should be
interesting to see the very excellent and memorable single "I Sucked A Lot
Of Cock" listed in the CIN Top 40. ;) <definately not kidding, though
there is the small possibility of this happening next week> :)

79 (NE) I WONDER IF HEAVEN'S GOT A GHETTO - 2Pac (Sony)

2Pac follows up his list of posthumous hits after the success of
"Runnin'", a single that he dueted with The Notorious B.I.G., ironically,
another successful posthumous rapper.

82 (NE) YOU MAKE ME WANNA - Usher (BMG)

Teenage sensation, rapper and 18 year old, Usher makes his debut
appearance in the Australian singles chart. One of the biggest hits of
1997 in the United States, and more recently a #1 debut single in the UK,
this could be the start of an impressive run of hits if his international
success is anything to go by.

95 (NE) I DO - Lisa Loeb (UMA)

I can't bring myself to write something "nice" about this entry for the
simple reason of Channel V playing this three times an hour for two
months. Annoying. Yuck.
