This week : 15 new entries, no non-movers, 1 climbers & 24 downers.

CHART TIME! :
-------------
(* - my current favourites)
(!!! - Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) - Repeat., ie. a re-release)

40 NEW ENTRY : The Human League - Stay With Me Tonight *

The Human League made a good comeback last year with the Top 10 hit, "Tell
Me When" which harkened back to their days in the early 80's. The follow-up's
"One Man In My Heart" and "Filling Up With Heaven", were good but didn't do
as well, the latter only barely breaking into the Top 40 for one week.
This new hit would equally feel at home had it been released 10 years ago,
but hasn't been received as well as this low placing shows. Most singles which
enter the Top 40 anywhere in the bottom ten rarely get higher. I don't think
this one will go anywhere but down unfortunately.

39 (14) FALLER : Gene - For The Dead
38 (17) FALLER : Robson & Jerome - Up on the Roof/I Believe
37 NEW ENTRY : Frank Black - Men in Black

I haven't heard this yet, but the man from the Pixies is on the climb.
The last single I heard from him was 1994's "Headache" which only made no.53
but should've been a monster. The only other solo track of his which springs to
mind is the older "Los Angeles" which is excellent.

36 NEW ENTRY : Pato Banton with Sting - Spirits in the Material World :O ===

You think Sting would've learned his lesson with the mess that Pato Banton
turned Sting's "This Cowboy Song" into. A good song had loads of rap-crap
babbled all over it, and I kept yearning for the original every time the
Pato version came on the radio.
This song is even worse, and barely sounds like the original Police classic.
Perhaps Sting will take the hint this time.

35 NEW ENTRY : Upside Down - Change Your Mind

The latest in a long line of teen-boy bands, and whether they become
successful, or fade into obscurity after a week in the charts, is something
I couldn't care less about. I'm tired of this type of music.

34 (22) FALLER : Judy Cheeks - Reach
33 NEW ENTRY : Tak Tix - Feel Like Singing
32 (21) FALLER : Madonna - Oh Father *

I was so sure that I'd heard this one a few years ago, and I was right.
Thanks to Chris for pointing out that while we had "Dear Jessie" as a single
way back when, the rest of the world had this one which is currently featured
on her album containing only ballads, "Something To Remember".

It's a shame that this one didn't reach the Top 10. Her last single to miss
the Top 10 was "Take a Bow" which also peaked at No.16.

31 (23) FALLER : Taylor Dayne - Tell It To My Heart (R)

First released in 1988, this one went Top 3. I don't know why it's been
re-released in this remixed form. Ah, of course, a Best-of in the pipeline.
Out of all of Taylor Dayne's singles, I only really liked "I'll Be Your
Shelter" which scraped No.43 in 1990. Should've been a big one.

30 (26) FALLER : Symbol/Prince - Gold *
29 (18) FALLER : Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men - One Sweet Day

On Radio 2 last week, I heard a short piece in which people on the street were
asked to give their impression of hell. Some people drew religion into the
subject, talking about all the bad things that Satan would do to them (as if),
but the best one was a girl who said that her idea of hell would be to be
locked in a room where the Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men video was played over
and over again :)
Apologies to Anders in advance for this one, but I couldn't help it :)

28 (19) FALLER : Dubstar - Not So Manic Now *
27 (16) FALLER : Pulp - Disco 2000 *
26 (12) FALLER : The Mike Flowers Pops Orchestra - Wonderwall

Mike Flowers demo version of Oasis's song was discovered by Radio One DJ
Kevin Greening, and then played endlessly on that show, and on Chris Evans'
show. You have them to blame...

25 NEW ENTRY : Sunscreem - White Skies
24 (20) FALLER : Tori Amos - Caught a Lite Sneeze *
23 NEW ENTRY : Nightcrawlers featuring John Reid - Let's Push It :O ===

The Nightcrawlers singles get more pointless with each release.
This one is even worse than the last two....put together.

22 (13) FALLER : The Levellers - Just the One *
21 NEW ENTRY : Lush - Single Girl * !!!

I first fell in love with the music of Lush with their album "Gala", and
one particular track "Sweetness and Light", a tuneful, airy, bright sort of
(mostly)instrumental, well it has some lyrics but they fade into the music
too much (but just enough). It could be classed as ambient.
"Single Girl" is completely different. Definitely their best shot for an
assault on the charts, and I love it, and the lead singer, Miki, is a babe!
And they were both on the Big Breakfast recently too with Zig and Zag.
Certainly brightened up my morning :)

20 (24) *HIGHEST CLIMBER* : Dreadzone - Little Britain

...for the second week running.

19 (8) FALLER : Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet *
18 (10) FALLER : Coolio featuring LV - Gangsta's Paradise
17 NEW ENTRY : LL Cool J featuring Boyz II Men - Hey Lover
16 (15) FALLER : The Presidents of the United States of America - Lump :O ===
15 (11) FALLER : Shaggy featuring Grand Puba - Why you treat me so bad ? :O ===
14 (9) FALLER : Molella featuring the Outhere Brothers-If You Wanna Party :O ===
13 NEW ENTRY : Leftfield - Release the Pressure *
12 NEW ENTRY : Bucketheads - Got Myself Together :O ===

Some people may be a fan of the Bucketheads, but I certainly am not.
I just can't see the point of taking an old 70's song and adding an extra
dance beat most of the time.

11 (7) FALLER : Eternal - I Am Blessed
10 (6) FALLER : TLC - Creep '96 (R)
9 NEW ENTRY : Coolio - Too Hot
8 NEW ENTRY : Cast - Sandstorm
7 NEW ENTRY : Cher - One By One

Cher was the guest on the National Lottery show on Saturday 6th January, for
the double-rollover jackpot, on which she performed this song. Surely her
numbers came up as she was paid UKP 30,000 for the 10 minute performance!

6 (5) FALLER : Oasis - Wonderwall *
5 (4) FALLER : Everything But the Girl - Missing *
4 (3) FALLER : Baby D - So Pure
3 (2) FALLER : Boyzone - Father And Son
2 (1) FALLER : Michael Jackson - Earth Song
1 NEW ENTRY : George Michael - Jesus To A Child * !!! *NEW NUMBER ONE*

With Michael Jackson's Earth Song, the record for the most number of No.1's
to go straight in at the top slot was broken as MJ made it 5 in a row.
George Michael breaks it further with 6. The previous four were Shaggy,
Simply Red, Coolio, and Robson & Jerome.

George Michael's first proper (ie. non-charity) solo single in years is
absolutely bloody fantastic, and IMHO sounds a lot like the sort of song
which would fit in nicely with the music on his previous album,
"Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1"
This ballad lasts 6 minutes, with a video bathed in soft focus, and George
with a sort-of goatee beard to go with it.
The album is released in the spring, and I shall be the first person in the
queue to buy it.
