Hey Hound Dog man
My old friend
Play it again
It was one of those times where something springs forth from the long
buried depths of your memory, and I KNEW I had heard this song quite
frequently for a few short months in the early 80s. My question is did
Roy only record it or were there other versions around, my memory is not
of him doing it but it could be faulty. I think it was played on my local
album rock station for a short while around that time. Does anyone know
the history of this song?
Thanks
bob
Hound Dog Man is from the 1959 film by the same title that starred Fabian
in a surprisingly effective performance. Fabian took the song to the top
ten the same year.

Roy Orbison performed "Hound Dog Man" when he appeared here in Edmonton
in 1981. He dedicated it to the memory of "his old friend". I don't
recall ever hearing it on the radio or seeing it on any album.--

I figure that I have to step in here. There have been quite a few
people that have come up with Fabian as the person that did this
originally, even quoting the movie that he starred in called "Hound
Dog Man."
I just played my original 45 of Fabian's version of "Hound Dog Man".
With the lyrics that were cited above THIS IS NOT THE FABIAN SONG.
The above lyrics are nowhere in Fabian's version. The only thing that
matches is the "Hound Dog Man" part.

No, this song was very obviously about Elvis. Another person pointed me
toward Lenny LaBlanc and in fact he did an album of the same name in the
late 70s, I assume after Elvis died (LL apparently wrote it).
But it is not the same sone. I don't know whether the version I remember
is Roy or Lenny L.

It was....written by Roy and can be found on his Laminar Flow lp (1979).

Fabian did this song. "Hound Dog Man, Hound Dog Man, I want to be your
Hound Dog Man."

That's a completely different song from the one done by Roy Orbison,
which in fact was an Elvis tribute.
