There is much flute action on Genesis' Foxtrot album. All
I can think of, though...
And, of course, Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Surprised nobody's
said that yet.
There is an English band called Frazier Chorus which has flute (and oboe)
in most of their songs as well. More an "alternative" band than a "rock"
band, but I thought I'd mention them anyway...

Because those aren't flutes, they're recorders - possibly played on a
Mellotron. (Elton John played mellotron-flute on "Daniel".)

Noone has mentioned Traffic yet, or Camel, Soft Machine, Mothers of Invention,
Blues Project/Seatrain ("Flute Thing"), Moody Blues, King Crimson....all bands
with flutists.
How about Hendrix on "Electric Ladyland", Chris Wood of Traffic is on "1983".

Several progressive rock (or art rock) groups used flute music in their
performances.
Peter Gabriel played flute on a number of early Genesis songs. Songs from
Trespass (1970), Nursery Cryme (1971), Foxtrot (1972), and Selling England
by the Pound (1973) feature Peter and his flute.
Ray Thomas played flute on several Moody Blues albums over the years.
Mel Collins played flute on King Crimson's albums In The Wake Of Poseidon
(1970) and Lizard (1971). Ian McDonald played flute on the album In The
Court Of The Crimson King (1969).
Some of Steve Hackett's (ex-Genesis guitarist) albums feature flute music.
In a more pop-type group, Greg Ham played flute on Men At Work's album
Cargo.
That's all I can think of for now. Hope this helps in your flute-pursuit!

Not only that, it's a mellotron synthesizing a recorder.

"Jungleland", which is to be found on Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" album,
has some flutes together that do an incredible job (OK, and there's the violin,
the piano and... DO I HAVE TO SAY HIS NAME?...:) )
Mark.
And there was me thinking that was John Paul Jones playing the
_recorders_ at the beginning...not flute, I'll grant you, but I don't
think it was all mellotron either. Forgive me if I'm wrong.
Keith.

Including Focus, best known for 'House of the King' and 'Sylvia' in 1972
(although only the former has flute, wonderfuly over-blown)
I'm sure it is a real recorder.
Isn't it an ocarina, which has a non-western tuning?
A mellotron doesn't synthesize its sounds, it plays back
actual recordings of the instrument.

OK, how about rock songs that use a recorder?
"Knots", by Gentle Giant is *my* favorite.

I wouldn't say that Focus was best know for those tunes, at least in the US
they weren't.
Let's get obscure...
"Audience" - several songs from their "House on the Hill" album featured
the flute prominantly.

The flute is featured alot on most of the music done by the Marshall
Tucker band - very interesting for a southern country rock band.

Chris.
Some of his solo stuff has flute in it as well, but more
sparsely, as his use of synthesizer and 1970's VOX stuff
increased.

I just wanted to throw in my two cents worth...
The mellotron does indeed play back recordings of the instrument--flutes,
violins, voices, and some weird horn-type sound that I can't quite place.
The instrument on "Stairway to Heaven" is indeed a mellotron. The
mellotron figured prominently in the music of such progressive rock acts as
Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc.
It can also be heard on "Breaking the Girl" and "Sir Psycho Sexy" on the
Red Hot Chili Peppers' "BloodSugarSexMagik" album.
