lots of Moody Blues stuff, most notably "Nights In White Satin"
lots of Traffic stuff, most notably "40000 Headmen" and "Rainmaker"
"Color My World" by Chicago
"California Dreamin'" and "Creeque Alley" by the Mamas and Papas
"Rockin' Robin" by Bobby Day (OK, so it's really a piccolo...)
"I Talk To The Wind" by King Crimson
"Windy" by the Association
"Flute Thing" by the Blues Project

there's even an early Black Sabbath song with a flute, but I don't remember
the title...

And, of course, Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Surprised nobody's
said that yet.

There is an English band called Frazier Chorus which has flute (and oboe)
in most of their songs as well. More an "alternative" band than a "rock"
band, but I thought I'd mention them anyway...

Because those aren't flutes, they're recorders - possibly played on a
Mellotron. (Elton John played mellotron-flute on "Daniel".)

Several progressive rock (or art rock) groups used flute music in their
performances.

Peter Gabriel played flute on a number of early Genesis songs. Songs from
Trespass (1970), Nursery Cryme (1971), Foxtrot (1972), and Selling England
by the Pound (1973) feature Peter and his flute.

Ray Thomas played flute on several Moody Blues albums over the years.

Mel Collins played flute on King Crimson's albums In The Wake Of Poseidon
(1970) and Lizard (1971). Ian McDonald played flute on the album In The
Court Of The Crimson King (1969).

Some of Steve Hackett's (ex-Genesis guitarist) albums feature flute music.

In a more pop-type group, Greg Ham played flute on Men At Work's album
Cargo.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope this helps in your flute-pursuit!

The flute is featured alot on most of the music done by the Marshall

Some of his solo stuff has flute in it as well, but more
sparsely, as his use of synthesizer and 1970's VOX stuff

I just wanted to throw in my two cents worth...

The mellotron does indeed play back recordings of the instrument--flutes,
violins, voices, and some weird horn-type sound that I can't quite place.
The instrument on "Stairway to Heaven" is indeed a mellotron. The
mellotron figured prominently in the music of such progressive rock acts as
Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc.

It can also be heard on "Breaking the Girl" and "Sir Psycho Sexy" on the
Red Hot Chili Peppers' "BloodSugarSexMagik" album.
