7. This week's top 50:

The 23rd annual ARIA Awards were held at Sydney Olympic Park on
Thursday 26th November. Celebrating the Australian music
industry, the awards greatly influence the music charts in
the few weeks following the ceremony with artists who are
nominated or who win awards typically enjoying increased
single or album sales. At this years awards, the electronic
music duo of Empire of the Sun were the most successful,
snatching 7 awards (3 were artisan awards) from a total of 11
nominations. A bit of a disappointment on the night with 2006's
Australian Idol runner-up Jessica Mauboy being nominated in a
whopping 7 categories but she only won just one award, and that
was for the non-voting category of highest selling Australian
single for "Running Back". Surprisingly, the best male and
best female award winners were Australian artists with poor
music sales - Daniel Merriweather and Sarah Blasko - which clearly
illustrates the awards are about opinions amongst peers, not the
volumes of music being sold.

Now, onto this week's chart and Kesha still retains the number
one position with "Tik Tok" for a third week in a row. Jay Sean's
"Down" is preparing for a tilt at the top, now up to number 2 in
a 4 week chart run that's gone 9-6-3-2. No surprise to see the
ever successful Rihanna make the top 10 this week as her debut from
last week, "Russian Roulette", climbs from number 11 to 7.
And dropping out of the top 10 is La Roux's "Bulletproof".

So what of last week's 5 new hits? We saw the highest new entry,
Rihanna's "Russian Roulette", rocket into the top 10. Jay-Z's
duet with Alicia Keys on "Empire State Of Mind", the biggest
selling single in the U.S. this week, is also on the way up,
climbing from its number 20 debut to number 12 this week.
The Glee Cast have lasted just one week with "Sweet Caroline"
while Jason DeRulo makes a hefty leap from number 39 to 23
with "Whatcha Say". And last week's final new entry, the
formidable combination of Timbaland and Nelly Furtado on
"Morning After Dark" drops right out of the top 50 this week
after debuting at number 40.

A whole stack of re-entries this week. The most spectacular of
those comes from Powderfinger who are back at number 26 with
"All Of The Dreamers", co-inciding with the debut at number one
on this week's albums chart of their new album "Golden Rule".
Michael Buble's visit to Australia his media appearances are
helping sales as "Haven't Met You Yet" bullets from number
46 to 22 - the single's highest position so far. Meanwhile
his "Crazy Love" album has rebounded up the albums chart,
up from number 6 to 2 this week.

Just two new entries into this week's top 50.

38. FIREFLIES - Owl City
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: #38
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI4JLa0hbUw
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/yh5ddkn
Artist website: www.owlcitymusic.com

23 year-old American musician Adam Young is the face behind
the electronic pop collective Owl City. His MySpace profile
gave great exposure to his music and after a couple of musical
releases, his big break came with his second album "Ocean
Eyes". Matt Thiessen of rock band Relient K supplied guest
vocals on the track "Fireflies" which reached number one
on the U.S. Billboard charts and it debuts at number 38 in
Australia this week.

50. LOVE LONG DISTANCE - Gossip
CD single: (not released yet)
Digital track: (not in top 40)
Music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WtXJXlqqOE
Song lyrics: www.tinyurl.com/yfphq8x
Artist website: www.gossipyouth.com

3-piece American rock band Gossip enjoyed a huge top 10 hit
with "Heavy Cross" which was recently certified platinum.
That single was lifted off their "Music For Men" album
which now spawns a second single this week, "Love Long
Distance", which debuts at number 50.
