One of my three or four favorite albums of all time. Most people
prefer the second Big Star album (and it's undeniably great) but for
my money "Third" is one of the greatest, most desolate pieces of music
ever put on vinyl. I'm not sure when it picked up the "Sister Lovers"
title--when it was first released (years after it was recorded) it was
simply called "Third".

Is it really that obscure? Perhaps you just discovered it?

So anyway, what was it you wanted to know?

Fear not, my fine feathered friend.
Big Star's first two albums are out on one CD now, and their third
is out on CD as well. You can also get a greatest hits CD called
Big Star's biggest, but they leave out some good stuff on it, so
get the whole shebang instead.

Big Star - Alex Chilton(gtr, voc), Chris Bell (gtr, voc, left the band in
December 1972), Andy Hummel (b,voc) and Jody Stephens (dr) formed in 1971
and released two albums for Ardent:
No. 1 Record (1972, rereleased in Europe in 1986 on Big Beat WIK 53)
and
Radio City (1974, rereleased in 1986 on Big Beat WIK 54)
A third album, with the intended title _Sister Lovers_ was recorded in the
autumn of 1974 but as the band could not find a release for it at the
time, they split. It was however released in 1978, but then entitled _Big
Star Third_. There were at least two versions with different track
listings released to add some confusion; the US version on PVC and the UK
version on Aura. This album has since been rereleased as _Sister Lovers_,
but unfortunately I don't have any details about that.
I think all of these three are available on CD.
An incomplete listing of Cilton's solo releases thereafter looks like
something like this: (feel free to make additions and corrections):
Singer Not The Song (Ork, #81978, 1977)
Five tracks from a 1975 recording session.
Bach's Bottom (Line Records, 1981)
German album containing all of the abovementioned 1975 session.
(Incredible title, eh?)
One Day In New York (Trio, 1981?)
Obscure japanese album with various recordings from 1975-77, including the
"Singer" EP and some live recordings with Chilton backed by The Cossacks -
a backing band he used at the time that included the then not-yet-dB Chris
Stamey on bass.
Chris Stamey: The Summer Sun b/w Where The Fun Is (Ork, #81982,1977)
Chilton on production and some backing instruments/vocals
Bangkok b/w Can't Seem To Make You Mine (Fun,1978)
Like Flies On Sherbert (Aura, AUL 710, 1980) First solo album. Mighty
odd.
Live In London (Aura, AUL 723,1982)
Recorded in May 1980, with the rhythm section borrowed from The Soft Boys
and Knox (ex Vibrators) on rhythm guitar.
Feudalist Tarts (Big Time, BTA 005, 1985)
Document (Aura, AUL 732, 1985) - compilation
Alex Chilton's Lost Decade (Fan Club, FC 015, 1985) - another complation
(what's on it?)
No Sex (Big Time, 1005-7,1986) - 12" EP
Unfortunately I have no info on Chilton's work after this. Anyone else
maybe?
Finally, maybe one should mention Chris Bell's solo single too:
I Am The Cosmos b/w You And Your Sister (Car,1978)
Chris Bell, who sadly died in a car crash on Christmas Day 1979, recorded an album's worth of material in 1978, but could not find anyone interested in
releasing it - except for this. The b-side features Chilton on backing vocals. Whatever happened to the rest of Bell's recordings?

I also would like any info; I have this 45 and *love* it. The production is
pretty rotten; very ambitious production that suffers from the lack
of sophisticated recording facilties, I suspect.. the a-side is a wonderful
pop song..
thanks, Anders for noting this one..

Sister Lovers can probably be considered more as the first of Chilton's solo
albums (I think Jody Stephens was the only other Big Star member left by now)
and in my opinion his best. It contains some white soul classics like
Holocaust, Kizza Me, and Big Black Car as well as a cover of Femme Fatale.
Haven't heard this one but the reviews say it should have stayed lost.

In 1988 (i think) he put out an album called "High Priest" which is not at all
bad. I haven't heard anything from him since. Does anybody know what he's
doing?
It's also worth noting that Chilton has produced an album for the Cramps and
also played drums (under the name LX Chilton) for Tav Falco's Panther Burns.

Has anybody seen a copy of this anywhere? It's the one record
released on Chris Stamey's Car(nivorous) Records that I've never
been able to find.

Here's someone else who'd like to know. "You and Your Sister" is one of
my alltime favorites.
I think Alex Chilton is also partly responsible for
Peter Holsapple - Big Black Truck (single on CAR)

I agree completely. A great album. But. . .
>It contains some white soul classics like

^^^^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^ ^^^
"White soul classics"!? Holocaust is funeral piano and tormented
lyrics with grinding, moaning guitar noises. Big Black Car is a ppp
drone about isolation. I wouldn't call either of these white soul.
Both great songs, though, and the transition from the desolation of
Holocaust to the stunned, joyous Kanga Roo is one of the most moving
moments in all of music for me. Side two of this record is really a
dark night of the soul, with dawn on the other end.
