This week we started programming on a new charts engine again.
It's going to be version 5, and since version 4 was already
20,000 lines of code, we don't expect to be ready with version 5
sometime soon.

However, you might be interested to know about the direction we
want to be heading with this new charts engine. We are thinking
of abolishing voting via email, so all votes should be submitted
with the voting forms on our websites. I'm sure some people won't
like this, but they should now that the email votes cost us a
huge amount of time every week, due to all the human errors that
come with it. With the web votes the ID numbers and titles are
never wrong. The time we save can then be used to further improve
the web forms and make them easier to use.

When we only use web forms we will be able to store the votes in
a server database. This enables us to compile in-between results
on the fly, so people can come back every hour if they wish, and
have a look at the updated results in the charts. (This is
another reason to stop using email votes, since these can only
be parsed once a week.)

Another thing we will improve on are the algorithms used for the
compilation of the charts. Our current results are already quite
good, but they can be ever better. It is still possible for some
people to push certain titles up the charts, further than they
ought to be. We have some new ideas to smoothen the effect of
lobbies and other phenomena, to have the charts even better
reflect global opinions on the Internet.

As I said, it will take us quite some time to have the new engine
built and operational. For the next few months everything will
stay as it is right now.
