7. This week's top 50:

We guess it had to happen. Killing Heidi's "Mascara" single never managed
to secure the number one position on all of the state charts, and had only
narrowly secured the national number one position over the last three
consecutive weeks. However, this week, the single that was number one
before "Mascara" and the single that was also number one in several
states while Killing Heidi were top of the charts nationally, now returns
to the number one position. That's right, after two weeks at number one
in late January, Macy Gray's "I Try" now returns back to the national
number one position this week. So when in the past has a single gone
to number one, dropped back down the chart for at least a week, then
returned back to number one, just like Macy Gray did this week? Over
the last 11 years, this has only happened seven times prior to this week,
and five of those seven occurances were during 1989.

Madonna's "Like A Prayer" is the most unusual in the list above as it
went to number one on four separate occasions!

Bolting from 15 to 3 this week is Chris Franklin's "Bloke" - a modified
version of Meredith Brooks' single "Bitch", and thus it becomes a serious
contender for the number one position over the next few weeks. Also
making good inroads into the top 10 is Tina Cousins. "Pray" leaps from
12 to 8 this week, eclipsing the number 14 peak of her last single
"Forever".

This week we have a whopping 10 brand new entries into the top 50. Over
the last 11 years, we have had this many new entries on just one other
occasion only. The chart dated 26th July 1992 saw 10 new hits make their
first appearance in the top 50, with 3 of those being first-time top 50
hits for their respective artists. This week, 5 of the 10 new entries
come from artists who have never made the Australian top 50 before.
Of those 10 new hits, three are Australian. Melbourne punk and hip-hop
hardcore band "28 Days" send their release "Here We Go / Sucker" straight
to number 21 this week, while Taxiride's third offering from their
chart-topping "Imaginate" album is the number 45 hit "Can You Feel".
Meanwhile, Deni Hines is back - "Pull Up To The Bumper" is her first top
50 hit in almost four years. Her new single, accompanied by a very
lavish and colorful music video, enters the chart at number 42, and
features on the soundtrack to the up-coming movie "The Wog Boy".
