Most of these are good selections, but some could be argued as not being
one-hit wonders to a great extent:
> Safety Dance Men Without Hats
They also had "Pop Goes The World", which was a decent sized hit.
> Obsession Animotion
They also did "Room To Move" which went Top 10 in 1989, and "Calling It
Love".
> Naughty,Naughty John Parr
Also had a massive hit with "St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" in 1985 (or
was it 1986?)
> Relax Frankie Goes to Hollywood
From the same album, "Two Tribes", "The Power Of Love", etc.
This is not meant as a flame, BTW, but the magnitude of some of the other
songs by these artists might make them invalid for being called one-hit
wonders.
>By the way there was a song, I think by Dead or Alive about a
>record spinning round and around, do you remember that one?
That's the #1 single "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)", from
the Youthquake album in 1985 (or was it 1986?). They also had "Come
Home With Me Baby" in 1989, though (or was it 1990?), so they might
not qualify as a one-hit wonder.

Well, the following did have more than one hit:
> Don't You Want Me Human League
In 1987, they also had a hit with "Human"
> One Thing Leads To... Fixx
That same album ("Reach The Beach") also had "Saved By Zero,"
which became a hit before "One Thing..."
> Naughty,Naughty John Parr
I believe he also had a hit in '86 with "St. Elmo's Fire"
(not to be confused with the instrumental by David Foster).
> Relax Frankie Goes to Hollywood
"Two Tribes" was a big hit too.
> ELECTRIC AVENUE Eddy Grant (classic!)
He also hit in '84 with "Romancing The Stone."
> Always Something There.. Naked Eyes

"You Spin Me 'Round" by Dead or Alive. They had other hits, but
I guess they might be considered 1HWs as the other songs didn't fare as big.
Oh, I know another one hit wonder from the 80s!
"We Are The World" by USA For Africa.
I understand they broke up after the song was recorded. :)

Yeah, it was called "You Spin Me Round." Cool song.
A few of the above can't totally be considered to be one-hit wonders, since
the groups did in fact have other (in some occasions, bigger) hits:
Men Without Hats--Pop Goes the World (not big, but had some MTV airplay)
Human League--I'm Only Human
John Parr--Man In Motion (Theme to St. Elmo's Fire)--great song!
Frankie Goes to Hollywood--Two Tribes
'til Tuesday--didn't have another hit, but lead singer Aimee Mann just came
out with a fairly popular album (Whatever) last year, and also sang on
Rush's "Time Stand Still"
A few others:
A Flock of Seagulls--I Ran
Split Enz--I Got You
The Buggles--Video Killed the Radio Star (MTV's first video)
The Tubes--She's a Beauty
Oingo Boingo--Weird Science
The Waitresses--I Know What Boys Like
Wall of Voodoo--Mexican Radio
Nena--99 Luftballons (99 Red Balloons is really the same song)
Cutting Crew--(I Just) Died In Your Arms
Tim Buk 3--I Gotta Wear Shades
There's gotta be a bunch more, but hey, we've got quite a list going
already!

You may want to check out your local bookstore's entertainment section for

1992, might be a bit before that, but it's a great book, and brings back
alot of songs unheard these days.

Actually, they were called The Weather Girls. Incidenally, one of them,
named Martha Wash became successful in the '90s by singing for C+C Music
Factory (she sang on "Gonna Make You Sweat") and in her own right as a solo
artist.

No, these groups had many hits as well. Especially Howard Jones and Thompson
Twins.
Spandau Ballet also had a big hit with "Only When You Leave." And ABC had
much more hits: "Poison Arrow," "The Look of Love," "Be Near Me" and "When
Smokey Sings."
No argument here! Especially the last few, which were one hit wonders in
every sense of the word.
The only exception is Club Nouveau, which also had a hit with "Why You
Trat Me So Bad?" It's not as memorable as "Lean On Me" but I do remember
listening to some countdown show back when WYTMSB was on the charts, and the
announcer said something like, "Now, Club Nouveau is proving to the world that
they're no one hit wonders! Here's "Why You Treat Me So Bad...""
>The Babys (lead singer w/Air Supply now, I believe)-- Every Time I Think

It's John Waite, who USED to be with the Babys. He joined Bad English, not

That was by Was (Not Was). They also had a song called "Knocked Down, Made
Small, Treated Like a Rubber Ball" which got some MTV airplay a few years
earlier. I believe Don Was has been a producer for several Top 40 albums,
too.
>> Final Countdown Europe
This is by far from a one hit wonder. This song only hit No. 8, while their
followup "Carrie" hit No. 3 Billboard and No. 1 R&R. They then scored with
"Rock The Night" in the 20's...and then their next album spawned
"Superstitious," which was around the upper 20's, low 30's...

"You Spin Me 'Round Like a Record" from 1985. They followed this up
with "Brand New Lover" (a favorite of mine) in late 1986.
--gregbo
Was (Not Was). This wasn't their first; "Spy in the House of Love"
(another favorite of mine) charted a few months earlier.
You may post if you liked the original and thought after another success,
else you might as well not have noticed that there is more.
Here's what several people said about one-hit wonders that weren't one-hitters:
Nena: she was one of the biggest acts in the Neue Deutsche Welle, though only
99 Luftballons seems to have made it internationally.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood: They already appeared twice in the postings, one
did suggest Two Tribes, another one Relax. And there is much more.
Gary Numan: Since he already won an award for Best British Artist in 1979 he
at least can't qualify as a 80's one-hit-wonder...
A-Ha: More than one big hit, though due to different taste on my side I don't
remember the names
Nina Hagen: ever heard her first widely availlable album (Nina Hagen Band)?
It's full of excellent tracks, and I'd say that for example part of one
song can be heard about once a day on SWF-3 (local radio station), since
they use it as a trailer for years. Oh yes, that album is from 1978.
The fact that this stuff is sung in German may be responsible for
the lack of knowledge about it elsewhere, but again that doesn't
qualify her as a one-hit-wonder.
A lot of others surely don't qualify as 1h-w's, but I'll stop here due to
lack of knowledge. And for the very same reason I won't make other suggestions.
Bye,
Uli

I don't think you can classify these guys as "one-hit wonders." True they
may have only had one in the '80s, but the term (IMHO) refers to groups who
simply had only one hit and then vanished. BTW, McCartney also had "My Brave

Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, who are otherwise known for being great music
video producers. I don't remember exactly which ones they did overall, or if
they're still at it, but I do know that they directed the 19 versions of the
video for "Leave It." by Yes.

While on the topic of 80's one hit wonders, someone mentioned the song
"Cry"... wasn't there a song by Waterfront called that?
AND one song I can't find the artist for is a song called "Dancin' in
Heaven"... I was looking through used records the other day and saw this
song name on an old 1984 Waterfront album. Is it really them that did it?
Here are a few lyrics from the song:
[sound of ice scraping]
are you ready? Here we go..
Slow, slow. Quick quick slow.
Slow, slow. Quick quick slow.
Countdown, it's the (time for the?) flighttime,
Night stars, shining in my eyes.
Ma says I'm gonna be the first one
To dance (way?) up in the skah-ee-eyes...
Dancin' in Heavin,
I never thought
I'd ever get my feet this far,
Or even (something)...
Been so long I can't remember.. come on you music maniacs, help me!

There's one song I liked but I forget who sings it. It's a girl singer,
it's got really loud drums, and the chorus goes "there's something going
on on on on" and fades out.
Also, who sang the song "Tarzan Boy"? It's now in a Listerine commercial.
And another song, "Modern Day Delilah," I don't remember who sings it.
It had an interesting video, though.

Eric
How do you define one-hit-wonder. A lot of the bands below have had some
more hits, maybe not as big, and a couple of albums. For me, a one hit
wonder is a band who releases one single, which makes a hit, and then
they are never heard of again. Like 'Never Never' by the Assembly (with
Vince Clarke). Or those girls who sang the memorable words "I'd rather
jack (than Fleetwood Mac)", I think Reynold Girls was their name...
Anyway... interesting idea and I'll be interested in reading the result!

Bonnie Tyler a "One Hit Wonder" ? Strange notion ;-)
It was on her album "Faster than the speed of night", produced by
Jim Steinman

Stevie
It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.
I guess one of the reasons why people think an artist is of one-hit wonder status depends on a couple of things:
1. What part of the world the song/artist was released;
2. Whether it hit Top-40 status, like on those ubiquitous Billboard charts.
3. The type of radio station format on which the song was played the most.
So, it's understandable that, say, Falco, ABC, Thompson Twins are OHW's to the top 40 crowd but not to the Modern Rock or Dance Club crowd. Or that Jason Donovan's a OHW in the US but not the UK.

To be honest, I think all the stuff being nominated in this 80s one-hit
wonders thread should in some way be qualified by the poster saying *where*
they were a one-hit wonder. Some of the names I've seen come up in this
thread were pretty big here in the UK, and to pick on one example (the one
quoted above) we find that their UK top 40 chart career looked something
like...
Sleepwalk 29 Jun 80
Vienna 2 Jan 81
All Stood Still 8 May 81
The Thin Wall 14 Aug 81
The Voice 16 Oct 81
Reap The Wild Wind 12 Sep 82
Hymn 11 Nov 82
Visions In Blue 15 Mar 83
We Came To Dance 18 May 83
One Small Day 27 Feb 84
Dancing With Tears In My Eyes 3 Mar 84
Lament 22 May 84
Love's Great Adventure 12 Oct 84
Same Old Story 31 Sep 86
All Fall Down 30 Nov 86
...and while I can't remember the exact chart position of last year's
"Vienna" re-release, it definitely went top 20.
So this is one "one-hit wonder" that managed 3 top 10 hits, 9 top 20 hits
and no less than 15 top 40 hits.
The same's true for a number of the artists who've been included in this
thread - the Human League, Howard Jones and the Thompson Twins to name just
three.
The reverse also applies of course - many of the one-hit wonders in the US
that are being listed got *nowhere*, not even achieving a solitary hit, in
the UK.

A little known fact: The group Animotion that had the hit "Obsession" was
indeed a one-hit wonder because the group that did "Room to Move" and
"Calling it Love" was a completely different group with the same name.
The later group was led by Mrs. Richard Marx (her name escapes me at the

"Rosanna" video, plus the movies "Flashdance" and "Dirty Dancing" as well
as many of her husband's videos.)

I would say that 90% of all the artists mentioned in this thread have had
other hits in the US alone. As another poster said, just because you
don't know of any other songs by the group...
I didn't catch the original post that started this monster thread. Who
said that Billboard was the sole source for classifying what a hit is or
is not? Soft Cell and Human League did plenty of stuff that was quite
popular here in Canada (for starters).
Many of the things being listed are still very popular (and quite saught
after) today. I'll take anyone's Human League albums right now if people
want to start giving them away (CD prefered). As well as anything
containing "I Melt With You" by Modern English... :)
Some people should definately stop listening to Top40 radio and get some
real musical taste developed.

She had plenty of hits (well, more than 2) in the 80's as well. I can go

for 1 or more alone.
"Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles
"Pop Music" by M
Does Kenny Loggins have any hits other than "FootLoose"?
Was "Rasputin" by Boney M released in the eighties? I think
Boney M had other songs that did well, but not on the pop charts.
For North America pop (but probably not Germany/Europe, and
not dance fans) Falco with "Rock Me Amadeus" probably qualifies.

Shalamar actually had one song I remember that came before Dancin' in
the Sheets, but I forget what it was called. It had a cool video,

What's the song called by Sergio Mendes (I get him mixed up with Sergio

There's also this really good duet that they used to play on Santa
Barbara called Can't We Try. I forget who sings it, though.

MV3 was, like awesome! (to put it in 80s terminology).
Was this a nationally syndicated show? I could never tell since I saw it here
in L.A. (Channel 9, formerly KHJ), and it was filmed/produced here. Also
since one of the hosts (the only one whose name I can remember) is
Richard Blade, a local radio personality here in Los Angeles (longtime staple
of KROQ-FM).
MV3 got even better when they cut out the dancing and just showed the videos!
And don't all of you agree that 80s videos are WAY supoerior to 90s videos?
90s videos all fall into 3 categories: 1) People dancing 2) Band performing
or 3) Any video with those damn annoying quick fades! Eugh! It's so annoying!

I think it was Dan Hill and Vonda Sheppard. And Dan Hill had a big hit in
the 70s with "Sometimes When We Touch."
Actually, Murray "was" a "one hit" artist when _One Night in Bangkok_ came out
(he had a hit in 1973? with the title song from _Jesus Christ Superstar_)

ABC had many hits; perhaps their biggest were _The Look of Love_ and
_Poison Arrow_.
"Words" was a relatively minor hit (in the league of another of their songs,
"Mental Hopscotch") compared to their big one, "Destination Unknown."
It was hosted by Richard Blade (is he still a KROQ DJ?), and David Wolper and Karen Scott (hubba-hubba)... BTW, whatever happened to DW and KS?
Wouldn't you know it, the videos that remain vivid in my mind were the ones by those once-deemed "one-hit wonders," (of course, we now know after much discussion that it can be a relative term)...
"Come on Eileen" (those overall-clad fiddlers)...
"99 Luftballoons" (black and white filming save for a red balloon)...
"I Eat Cannibals" (oooh, I never looked at a Hefty bag the same way since)...
Then there's one show up here in the SF bay area that was b4 its time, called "Rock Vision" on channel 26, I think it came out even b4 MTV.
