I'm off to a trade show at the Moscone Centre, San Francisco during
April.
Hopefully I'll have some spare time to see the sights but would
welcome the chance to add to my CD collection.
What I'm looking for is AOR/Rock/Metal 80s-90s cut outs or deletions.
Can anyone recommend any CD stores in the city or neighbouring areas
that specialise in these albums.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
David

I don't know that this store specialises in those cds, but i do know that
the Tower Outlet is pretty amazing with cds no more than $5.99 (as far as
I know). They also have videos and a few books, but mainly cds that
didn't get sold, so some are old, most have cut-outs. Just check out the
phone book when you get to S.F. because I don't remember the address or
anything right now.

Go to the Tower discount center at 3rd and Harrison (blocks from the
Moscone). Then go to Berkeley and go to Amoeba, on Telegraph.

I second this idea... Berkeley is northeast from SF across the bay
and has REALLY good stores all within a block or so... Amoeba, Leopold
(right around the corner), and some other place nearby have almost
anything you want...
Also, I'm sure you're familiar with Tower Records being you're from
the uk, but there is a pretty big Tower Records on the corner of Columbus
and Bay streets in SF...
I would also like to warn you in advance that both are dangerous
areas, and I would strongly suggest that you go to them during the day
for this reason... -Matt

Well, 3rd and Harrison is a bit dicey at night, but Columbus & Bay is
fine...no reason at all not to go there at night (they even have a parking
lot in front).
(When did they open the Tower discount center???)

Like Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley, the neighborhood gets a bit seedy at
night, but both Telegraph and Haight are pretty main thoroughfares,
so I'd call them "weird" more then dangerous. Still, it's probably
best to go during the day. Also, Haight St. gets worse as you head
into the lower Haight (getting further away from the park).
Anyway, after scaring you like that :-), let me say that Amoeba
(the one on Telegraph in Berkeley) shouldn't be missed! Great
store. While you're on Telegraph you might check out Rasputin Records
as well.
Cheers,
Bill
As you note, Haight Street between Golden Gate Park (Stanyon Street)
and Ashbury street is a pretty mixed area, but because of high
foot traffic it isn't too dangerous (except at very late hours).
The danger level increases precipitously about a block past
Haight and Ashbury. But there's also precious little reason to
go any further down Haight, unless you live there--all the shops
die off at that point. The best news is that all the record shops
are located before you reach the dicey part of Haight.
My personal recommendation would be for Recycled Records. Biggest
selection, generally reasonable prices. Almost all used/promo stuff.
Reckless is good if you want a doom-and-gloom emphasis
(both stock and employees). And they do carry some hard-to-find
indies and imports, both new and used. But prices are generally
high. Both Recycled and Reckless are at the corner of Haight/Ashbury.
Rough Trade Records, a couple of blocks up Haight (towards Golden
Gate Park) is more like Reckless, except without the doom-and-gloom
employees. They have more new stuff than either Recycled or Reckless.
I still recommend Streetlight Records (three locations: One in the
Castro district, one on 24th St. in NOE Valley, and one in San Jose)
over any of the above. And I think Amoeba in Berkeley is better than
any of 'em (is it just me, or has Rasputin's gone down the tubes in the
past few years? Last time I was in Berkely, I went into Rasputins and
was singularly unimpressed with the entire place...When I lived in
Berkeley [pre-Amoeba days], Rasputin's was generally the best place
around, though Mint Platter wasn't bad...).

It should only take about 5 min max. Have fun with it and thanks in advance.
