It has to do with the sad fact that once an Australian band gets really
big
world-wide, the Aussie public turns on them and labels them
"sell-outs." I
can't for the life of me figure out why the Australian public and press
decided
to attack bands like INXS once they achieved world-wide fame. Just
because they
didn't constantly tour down under? Just because they decided to enjoy
their hard-
earned rewards?

I think the thing is that people will generally buy the CD of a band
they like rather thatn the singles. ie- i don't know too many people
who buy LP's of dance groups and techno but I know a lot of people who
have bought Pollyanna's LP and not the singles.
Also, I dunno about others, but I tend to buy a lot of local EP's.
Where do they fit into the chart thing?? I also don't buy many local
singles, if i like the band, I buy the LP and then don't need to buy the
singles.
What does everyone else think???

Thought that I would point out a depressing fact from last week's ARIA
Top Fifty chart - only 4 artists were Australian:
> 6. (11) I WANT YOU - Savage Garden *
> 19. (12) JUST A LITTLE BIT - Gina G *
> 31. (33) TELLIN' EVERYBODY - Human Nature *
> 42. (--) SOLDIERS - You Am I *
Where's the support for our local music industry? Are the purchasing
public saying that local music isn't as good as overseas product? (I use
the term 'product' rather than music quite intentionally).
Don't get me wrong - I like music regardless of where it originates. But
the Top Fifty chart can be considered a significant sample of the
record-buying public, and Australian music only occupies 8% of chart
positions. This is a statistically significant figure: one would expect
a higher percentage of chart positions for Australian artists
considering that we are (supposedly) immersed within the local scene.
Without resorting to shallow jingoism, we know Australian music is as
good as, and often better, than the majority of overseas product. And
although commercial radio doesn't play as much Austarlian music as they
should, there are (I believe) regulations to ensure at least some
significant Australian music content.
So: given that Australian music is the equal to overseas product, and
gets some (albeit minimal) support on radio, why don't Australian
artists feature more prominently in the Top Fifty charts? Is it due to
major labels promoting homogenous product all over the world, with tacit
support of the commercial radio stations? Is it buyer ignorance or
indifference? Why? Why? Why?
Puzzled,
Geoff

I tell you right now the reason is that there is no COUNTDOWN !!
From 1975 to 1987 COUNTDOWN produced (effectively) bands such as
Skyhooks, Sherbet, AC/DC, Air Supply, Men At Work, Pseudo Echo, INXS,
Big Pig, ... need I go on. There is no longer a prime time live music
show in Australia. Channel 10 tried it and failed (but it was never
gonna work on that network), while nine and seven sit on their ass and
we are left with RAGE and Video Hits (and Red if you can get it), which
are good shows, but they're no COUNTDOWN.
Petition the ABC ! Bring back COUNTDOWN !!!

People buy singles for the following reasons:
- they don't want to buy the album, because they don't like it or
can't afford it (the later being the biggest reason for purchase).
- they can't wait for the album so they rush out and purchase the
single -> Explains why so many rock songs drop out of the chart
like a rock when the album comes out.
- they're a dedicated/diehard fan of the artist.
- Buy it for the remixes and extended versions. -> Dance/techno.
I personally buy dance/techno singles only just for the remixes. I don't
buy albums until I'm sure there are more than 3 goods songs on it.
: Also, I dunno about others, but I tend to buy a lot of local EP's.
: Where do they fit into the chart thing?? I also don't buy many local
: singles, if i like the band, I buy the LP and then don't need to buy the

ARIA includes EPs into their singles chart, AMR doesn't.
First of all, i'd like to point out that there really is only 3 locally
produced (ie produced by Australian based record companies) songs in the
Top 50. Gina G couldn't get a deal in Australia so she went to the UK where
she was signed on immediately, released "Ooh Ahh, Just A Little Bit",
made it to #1 on the UK charts and sold over 600,000 units there. Her
single then gets released in Australia and all the radio stations say
"Supporting Australian talent" when they play her song.
: Where's the support for our local music industry? Are the purchasing
: public saying that local music isn't as good as overseas product? (I use
: the term 'product' rather than music quite intentionally).
Australian pop music doesn't get a lot of airplay in
Australia, mainly because radio has an inferiority complex when
it comes to locally produced songs -- they'd prefer to play something
that has actually been a big hit overseas. One example being "Cot'n Eye
Joe" by the Rednecks: This song (like it or hate it) was released here more
than one month before it was in the UK. When it went to number 1 there,
radio here latched onto it -- 3 months after it was released in Australia.
If it didn't make it big overseas it would have never been played on
evening chart shows.
Also, the Australian singles market is considered too small to justify
the expenses in promoting new talent. The majors reckon the singles market
it shrinking -- what do you expect when singles now cost $10 - $14!!!
: Don't get me wrong - I like music regardless of where it originates. But

Wrong! The ARIA and AMR charts heavily descriminate against independent
labels and songs. The title sheets that chart stores have to fill out only list
songs that are 'expected' to chart. Sure, there's some blank spaces left
for stores to enter in sales of CD singles not listed, but record stores
aren't going to spend their time listing down hundreds of singles that
only sold one unit. The problems this causes is that if a song has 1 unit
sales in a lot of chart stores and the stores aren't going to bother listing
them, they are missing out on a Top 40 placing. In the end, you have
a very inaccurate chart -- and afterall this is what radio uses to
create their playlists.
I guess this is the store's fault for
not doing their job, but if you had to do it week after week after week
after week....etc.. you'd do it in a rush too.
: Without resorting to shallow jingoism, we know Australian music is as

FWIK, there isn't an 'Australian Content' regulation for radio. Some
people in the industry want a 20% quota but the radio stations are
resisting this move, arguing that Australian music isn't as good as
foreign music. IMHO, a content regulation is bad. All the radio stations
will do is put Tina and Peter on an even higher rotation.
: So: given that Australian music is the equal to overseas product, and
: gets some (albeit minimal) support on radio, why don't Australian
: artists feature more prominently in the Top Fifty charts? Is it due to
: major labels promoting homogenous product all over the world, with tacit
: support of the commercial radio stations? Is it buyer ignorance or
: indifference? Why? Why? Why?
I blame 2 factors: radio stations and record companies. Radio stations
only play 'radio friendly' tripe, so many Australian songs that would
probably do well in the singles chart will never get promoted. It's
amazing at how many fantastic Aussie rock, dance, techno and pop songs there
are, but as usual you won't here any of them unless you're listening to
pop orientated stations like Hitz, Kix and Kiss FM here in Melbourne.
Buyer ignorance is caused by the radio stations, so it's not the buyer's
fault that he/she doesn't know about this and that new Australian song.
Then I blame the major record companies for not bringing out enough
new talent. And finally the outrageous costs for CD singles.
If we had cheap CD singles and good pop orientated radio stations then the
situatio here would be much better, especially for Australian acts.
I'll cite the UK example: Over there they have many pop orientated
stations, all support UK music very eagerly, and most types of music, from
alterative rock, Brit Pop, dance, techno, pop (side note: "Born Slippy"
by Underworld managed to become the 12th most played song on UK radio
a few weeks ago -- that'd never happen here -- it'll probably be able
to reach #50, tops). The UK has also got a very accurate and highly
sophisticated music chart -- the best and most unique chart in the world (IMO).
If you've ever seen the UK Top 40 you'd find that up 80% of the chart
is occupied by UK acts, around 15 new entries in the Top 40 per week,
very short chart runs (12 weeks max), and a very wide variety of music,
from commercial to underground.
Sorry for the long reply...

i dont think so!!
generally, you only pay this much when you are buying imports or ep's.
these days its not rare to pick up cd singles for $4.95 (polygram and emi
do this regularly) and the others average at $8.95...

correct although, this will all change soon though when ARIA net comes

perhaps then we may see an accurate 'bribe-free' chart!!

We wish. Computerising the charts (will the figures be then calculated from
*every* store, or just the "chart stores"?) will just stop the obvious

the best way to remember the difference between these two tracks is that
Los Del Rio are the ones that have the girls singing the verses and the
guys doing the 'marcarena' bit, whilst the Los Del Mar version just has
guys singing.
In terms of their chart positions, the Los Del Rio version has 5 remixes
and costs $4.95 whilst the Los Del Mar version has one other remix and
costs $8....as Jim Carrey said in Ace Ventura...'gee......let me think' :)
hope this helps!

That should have been $9 - $14 in my original post. The two closest record
stores to me (Sanity & CC) charge $8.95 for singles from the majors,
$9.95 from Colossal and $12.95 - $13.95 for most Shock/Central station
titles. "Theme From S-Express: The Return Trip" - Sex-Express/Mark Moore and
"The Night Train" - Kadoc cost a ridiculous $14!! Yeah, you do find some
$4.95 promo-priced CDs, but how often is it something you really like?
I remember a while back CC had a big poster up with around 4 pictures
of CD singles on them, all for the price of $4.95, that is except for
one -- "Fire Starter" - Prodigy. That was still the regular $8.95. Of course
I bought mine 3 weeks prior for the regular price so it didn't matter much,
but for those wishing to buy it (mainly the broke kids) they would have
had to fork out $9.

Can't wait. Do you know how many stores will be contributing to the network?
Is it going to be more than the 150 or so now? Plus, they better sample
the right proportions for each city/region, not just 65 stores each in
Melbourne and Sydney, 6 each in Brisbane/Adelaide/Perth, and 1 each for
Darwin and Hobart! -- Of course this is a gross exzaggeration, but after
seeing the Perth chart's eratic behaviour and extreme movements (ten 35 place
movers & droppers in the Top 50 in one week!) you'd think so.

Like you said, there are two versions by two artists. That's why there are
two in the charts. If there were two versions by the same artist, then
sales figures would be represented as one artist on the charts.
Los Del Mar's version has been in the top 100 three weeks longer than Los
Del Rio's, and 1 week more in the Top 50. It's sales were slow at first
but when people heard the remixed version (Los Del Rio/Bay Side Boys remixes)
they probably bought one of the two versions thinking that it was the
Los Del Rio version. This probably explains why both have moved up the Top 50
in a similar fashion, Los Del Rio leading the charge.
While we don't usually see two versions of the same song charting together here
all that often, it's happened three times (probably more?) in the UK charts
in the past 2 years:
Wonderwall - Oasis*, Mike Flowers Pops -- both in the Top 5
{I think these two were in the
Aust top 50 together
at one time, Oasis
in the Top 10/20 and MFP btw
#40 - #50}
Alice Who the fuck/Hell is Alice? - ??? (forgot the artist's names)
-- both in the Top 10/20
X Files Theme - Mark Snow*, DJ Dado -- both Top 10.

Yes, but not the same guys - Los Del Mar features someone called
Pedro Castano (can't remember the correct spelling) on lead vocals.
I personally perfer the Los Del Mar (full Spanish version) - it seems to
have more "kick" in it than the Los Del Rio version. Hopefully Los Del
Mar will go top 10 - Los Del Rio is practically guaranteed to go to
number 1 anyway given that all the publicity with MACARENA seems to be
centred around that version.

It's because Australian record companies are full of scared little pen-pushin
faggots who don't know their arse from their teeth. If some of them grew some
balls and supported some DECENT local acts instead of the odd shit, boring, lifeless
crap, then maybe we'd have a chance on the international charts. Most record
company bosses wouldn't know a good act even if they jammed in their living rooms.
Sincerely
- jacked off!
ARIA & AMR follow trends by major chart compilers (CIN [UK], Soundscan/
Billboard[US]) so I guess the following case might also be true:
If both versions are by the same artist but each released by
different record companies, then it would be represented
as 2 different singles, such as the example of "Unchained
Melody" by the Righteous Brothers in the US charts in '89.
Then the original 60's(?) version (and royalty free version)
charted with the digitally remastered version (& not royalty
free). The DRV won out in the end.

same applies to MDS and most dance singles,
can't say that it's "financially viable" to like most decent dance stuff.
sometimes its almost 'worth' waiting for a local release
>Yeah, you do find some
>$4.95 promo-priced CDs, but how often is it something you really like?
true, only the majors can afford to do this...although every now and then
something good which the company is trying to get some attention on will
come out at $4.95 (ie. Marilyn Manson- sweet dreams) :)

sounds like a sony promotion to me. Prodigy should be priced at $4.95 as
far as i'm aware. probably just an invoice stuff-up.

>Can't wait. Do you know how many stores will be contributing to the network?
i think that its going to be all the current chart-stores plus any chosen
newcomers...not sure...
the transition period will take forever though!
>Is it going to be more than the 150 or so now? Plus, they better sample

ture, true!!
although i think that they allocate with population/sales in mind. in
other words, sydney and melbourne have more chart stores cause they have
a bigger population....doesn't nessecarily mean that the scene is any
better though!
>Totally agree! Anyone know when the neo-nazi ABA will be offering

probably after the licenses for the extremely popular and in huge demand
christian radio stations have been awarded..
priorities remember!!! ;)
