out of canada, released a widely successful e.p. last year which
featured a knock on the beach boys lead singer, titled "brian
wilson". "be my yoko ono" was the bigger "success", and has
been released as the promotional single here in the states.
the l.p., _gordon_ just came out in the states. it's on sire,
and does not include "fight the power" from the e.p., but
does include remixed (and i think worse) versions of
"be my yoko ono", "brian wilson", "$1000000", and
"blame it on me".
my genre for them? funny country/folk. i can't use a better
word, although neither quite fits them. know the housemartins?
well, at the end of one of the songs, the lead singer
puts in a verse from "happy hour", and sounds like them.

All good information, indeed. One other point is that they aren't the
"Barenared Ladies" but "Barenaked Ladies." They're from Toronto, and are
something of a local success story. They won the CFNY battle of the bands, and
their independently released cassette went platinum in Canada. Apparently
there was a controversy when they were supposed to play an outdoor concert in
Toronto -- the mayor saw the name of the group and kicked them off the list.
The number of complaints were so numerous that the mayor recanted...
I agree that the tape is better than the CD -- just goes to show you that
sometimes fewer tracks (meaning both "songs" and "tracks") work better.

Well, here are some of my comments after giving _Gordon_ a couple of
listens:
-> These guys remind me, oddly enough, a little of the
-> Rainmakers, the Bobs, Chris de Burgh and Mojo Nixon, though
-> they're not really much like any of the above. They're not
-> as out and out silly as either They Might Be Giants or Mojo,
-> but they do use humor throughout their music (check out "Be
-> My Yoko Ono" or "New Kid (On the Block)", among others).
-> Barenaked Ladies have an upbeat style that's difficult to
-> describe - it's got elements of punk, pop and maybe even a
-> little hip-hop here and there.

If you do not understand my silence
you will not understand my words.
They have described their music as "Acoustic Hip-Hop", and I think they are
brilliant. I just saw them in concert last Saturday(the 25th) and they are
the ultimate live band, humour, innovation and lots of sillyness.
They do a rap-jam at the end of their shows that is amazing.
The new CD is called "Gordon" and is on Sire/Reprise, the number
of the CD is 26956. The tape is probably only availible in Canada since it
was an independant release. I think the CD is a great way to get to know
the music/attitude of BNL.
Peace Out,
Rod
