Well, the title says it all - any assistance in settling a *very* stupid
argument would be greatly appreciated!

Jerry Jeff Walker wrote the song, so I'm guessing he was the first to
sing it (if only to himself)! The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had a hit with it
in 1970.

My guess would be that Jerry Jeff Walker was the first to sing
it, as he wrote the song. I don't believe his version ever got
significant airplay, so the first version heard on the radio
was probably the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's cover. Jerry Jeff
does include it on the record "Five Years Gone", but I don't
know if it was released before the NGDB's version.

Jerry Jeff Walker released an album entitled "Mr. Bojangles" with the title
song included in 1968. The NGDB's release was in the 1970-71 time frame.

I believe Jerry Jeff Walker wrote the song, and thus was
the first to sing it.
